RSS Defends UK Outreach as Protests Follow Mohan Bhagwat’s Visit
RSS says democratic dissent is expected and invites debate as British civil society groups call for opposition to events linked to its centenary outreach
LONDON — The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has sought to frame the controversy surrounding chief Mohan Bhagwat’s visit to Britain as an opportunity for discussion, saying the organisation is willing to engage with critics as well as supporters.
The response came after a group of civil society organisations approached London Mayor Sadiq Khan and the UK authorities over Bhagwat’s visit.
The organisations have called for the Greater London Authority to distance itself from events being organised by the RSS and have sought a public response from Khan.
RSS media head Sunil Ambekar, speaking to journalists in London on Friday, said disagreement was an ordinary feature of democratic societies.
He maintained that differing opinions should be heard rather than suppressed.
Ambekar said the organisation’s purpose in Britain was to explain its ideas, activities and worldview while allowing others to put forward their own positions.
He said the RSS had no objection to criticism and was prepared to engage with those interested in a direct exchange.
The controversy has emerged during Bhagwat’s three-country tour, which has included stops in the United States and Canada before his scheduled engagement in the UK.
His British programme forms part of activities marking the RSS centenary and its international outreach.
The London reaction echoes opposition encountered during Bhagwat’s earlier visit to the US.
Civil society groups in Britain have now asked Khan to take a position similar to that adopted by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Ambekar, however, said views from different sides had already been expressed in response to Mamdani’s position.
The organisations opposing the UK events have also raised concerns with the Foreign Office.
According to a report previously published by The Independent, their communication described Bhagwat’s tour as an effort to expand the organisation’s public engagement in Britain with the backing of its local associates.
The groups used strong language in their assessment of the RSS, alleging that the organisation has authoritarian and militarist characteristics and drawing comparisons with European fascist movements.
They urged the London mayor not to provide or facilitate a venue for the RSS-linked programme.
Among the signatories were Hindus for Human Rights, the UK-Indian Muslim Council, India Labour Solidarity and the South Asia Solidarity Group.
Their representation also sought information about security arrangements and the measures being considered by the Metropolitan Police to protect communities.
The groups further warned that Bhagwat’s appearance could, in their view, strengthen the position of RSS-linked organisations in Britain and contribute to tensions within the Indian diaspora.
They alleged that it could create conditions in which vulnerable communities feel threatened or intimidated.
The RSS has rejected the premise that its outreach should be viewed through that lens.
Ambedkar said the organisation wanted to communicate its ideas openly and expected disagreement to be part of that process.
For the RSS, the British visit is therefore being presented as an exercise in engagement rather than retreat.
For its critics, however, the programme has become a test of how UK institutions respond to an organisation whose ideology and activities remain deeply contested.

लंदन। राष्ट्रीय स्वयंसेवक संघ (RSS) के प्रमुख मोहन भागवत के ब्रिटेन दौरे को लेकर उठे विरोध के बीच संगठन ने कहा है कि वह अपने आलोचकों समेत सभी पक्षों से बातचीत के लिए तैयार है।
संघ ने अपने कार्यक्रमों को लेकर उठने वाली असहमतियों को लोकतांत्रिक व्यवस्था का सामान्य हिस्सा बताया है।
लंदन में शुक्रवार को पत्रकारों से बातचीत के दौरान RSS के मीडिया प्रमुख सुनील आंबेकर ने कहा कि अलग-अलग विचारों का सामने आना लोकतंत्र में असामान्य नहीं है।
उनके मुताबिक, संगठन अपनी विचारधारा और दृष्टिकोण को लोगों तक पहुंचाना चाहता है और इसके साथ ही विरोधी मतों को भी सुने जाने के पक्ष में है।
यह प्रतिक्रिया ऐसे समय आई है जब ब्रिटेन के कई नागरिक संगठनों ने लंदन के मेयर सादिक खान और ब्रिटिश अधिकारियों के सामने भागवत के दौरे को लेकर आपत्ति दर्ज कराई है।
इन संगठनों ने Greater London Authority से RSS द्वारा आयोजित कार्यक्रमों से दूरी बनाए रखने की मांग की है।
आंबेकर ने कहा कि संघ का उद्देश्य ब्रिटेन में अपने विचारों, कामकाज और दृष्टिकोण को स्पष्ट करना है।
उन्होंने संकेत दिया कि जो लोग संगठन से असहमत हैं, उन्हें भी अपना पक्ष रखने का अवसर मिलना चाहिए और RSS ऐसे लोगों के साथ बातचीत से पीछे नहीं हटेगा।
भागवत इस समय तीन देशों की यात्रा पर हैं।
अमेरिका और कनाडा की यात्रा के बाद उनका ब्रिटेन पहुंचना RSS की शताब्दी से जुड़े अंतरराष्ट्रीय संपर्क कार्यक्रमों का हिस्सा है।
उनके विदेशी दौरे के दौरान संगठन को विभिन्न स्थानों पर विरोध का सामना भी करना पड़ा है।
ब्रिटेन में उठे विवाद की तुलना अमेरिका में भागवत के पिछले दौरे के दौरान हुई प्रतिक्रिया से भी की जा रही है।
ब्रिटेन के कुछ संगठनों ने लंदन के मेयर से न्यूयॉर्क के मेयर जोहरान ममदानी के रुख जैसा कदम उठाने की अपील की है।
इस पर आंबेकर ने कहा कि ममदानी के रुख पर अलग-अलग पक्ष पहले ही अपनी प्रतिक्रियाएं व्यक्त कर चुके हैं।
RSS के विरोध में अभियान चला रहे संगठनों ने ब्रिटेन के विदेश कार्यालय को भी पत्र भेजा है।
द इंडिपेंडेंट की पहले प्रकाशित रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, पत्र में भागवत के दौरे को ब्रिटेन में संघ की सार्वजनिक पहुंच बढ़ाने की कोशिश के तौर पर पेश किया गया है, जिसे वहां मौजूद उसके सहयोगियों का समर्थन मिलने का दावा किया गया है।
इन संगठनों ने RSS को लेकर बेहद कड़ी आपत्तियां भी दर्ज की हैं।
पत्र में संगठन पर अधिनायकवादी और सैन्यवादी प्रवृत्तियों का आरोप लगाते हुए उसकी विचारधारा की तुलना यूरोपीय फासीवादी आंदोलनों से की गई है।
समूहों ने खान से RSS से जुड़े आयोजन के लिए किसी स्थल की सुविधा नहीं देने की मांग की है।
पत्र पर Hindus for Human Rights, UK-Indian Muslim Council, India Labour Solidarity और South Asia Solidarity Group सहित कई संगठनों के हस्ताक्षर बताए गए हैं।
इन समूहों ने कार्यक्रम के दौरान समुदायों की सुरक्षा को लेकर भी सवाल उठाए और Metropolitan Police की ओर से की जा रही तैयारियों की जानकारी मांगी।
विरोध करने वाले संगठनों ने यह आशंका भी जताई है कि भागवत की यात्रा से ब्रिटेन में RSS से जुड़े संगठनों का प्रभाव बढ़ सकता है और भारतीय प्रवासी समुदाय के भीतर तनाव गहरा सकता है।
उन्होंने संवेदनशील समुदायों के बीच डर या दबाव का माहौल पैदा होने की भी आशंका व्यक्त की है।
दूसरी ओर, RSS ने इन आरोपों के आधार पर अपने अंतरराष्ट्रीय संपर्क अभियान को रोकने के संकेत नहीं दिए हैं।
आंबेकर ने कहा कि संगठन खुलकर अपने विचार सामने रखना चाहता है और मतभेदों के बावजूद संवाद को लोकतांत्रिक प्रक्रिया का हिस्सा मानता है।
इस तरह भागवत का ब्रिटेन दौरा अब केवल RSS की शताब्दी outreach तक सीमित नहीं रह गया है।
एक ओर संघ इसे अपने विचारों को दुनिया के सामने रखने और संवाद बढ़ाने का अवसर बता रहा है, वहीं उसके आलोचक ब्रिटिश संस्थाओं से संगठन के कार्यक्रमों और उसकी सार्वजनिक भूमिका पर स्पष्ट रुख अपनाने की मांग कर रहे हैं।
