A suspected toxic-liquor incident in Sagar district has triggered a major administrative and medical response, with at least eight people reported dead and several others undergoing treatment after drinking liquor in and around Baraj village.
The deaths were reported after villagers who had consumed liquor on Saturday night began falling sick.
Vomiting and nausea were among the symptoms reported, prompting relatives and residents to rush affected people to medical facilities.
Given the possibility that contaminated alcohol is involved, the district administration has ordered a magisterial inquiry.
Police and excise officials are separately working to establish how the liquor reached the affected residents and whether a particular source is connected to the deaths.
The health department has meanwhile shifted into an intensive screening operation.
Three teams of doctors and nurses are stationed in villages identified as hotspots, with personnel visiting homes to locate people who may have consumed liquor and subsequently developed symptoms.
Officials are also trying to prevent delays in treatment. Patients are being assessed in the villages and at local hospitals, with those needing specialised care transferred to higher medical centres after their immediate condition is stabilised.
Sagar Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr Devesh Pateria said information regarding eight to 10 deaths had reached him so far.
He added that medical personnel had been working continuously since Saturday night and that the eventual number of affected people could change as more households are screened.
The suspected poisoning came under sharper scrutiny after a critically ill patient was brought to the casualty department in Sagar at about 7 pm on Saturday.
Doctors attempted emergency resuscitation, but the patient could not be saved.
Doctors are examining whether the symptoms are consistent with exposure to methyl alcohol, a highly toxic form of alcohol that can cause life-threatening poisoning.
Pateria, however, cautioned that this remains an initial medical suspicion and cannot yet be treated as a confirmed cause of death.
The referral process has also gathered pace. According to the health department, approximately 25 patients have been sent to higher medical facilities.
Some were shifted after receiving initial stabilisation because the treatment they may require is beyond the capacity of the local hospital.
District Magistrate Pratibha Pal said the administration was acting on reports connecting the illnesses and deaths with the consumption of illicit liquor.
Officials from the sub-divisional administration have joined medical personnel in the field, while the Civil Hospital is also being used as a key point for examination and treatment.
Authorities have issued a precautionary appeal to residents who may have consumed alcohol during the preceding 24 to 48 hours.
Even those experiencing relatively mild symptoms have been advised to seek medical evaluation rather than wait for their condition to deteriorate.
The investigation has now acquired a forensic dimension. An excise team visited the area and collected liquor bottles from a local seller.
The seized material will undergo laboratory testing to determine its composition and establish whether adulteration or contamination played a role in the incident.
For now, investigators are examining multiple aspects of the case, including the origin of the liquor, its distribution, and the circumstances in which it was consumed.
Officials are also verifying the identities of those who died before releasing them publicly.
The incident has drawn a response from Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who ordered officials to move quickly against anyone found responsible.
Yadav called for a detailed investigation and strict action, saying his government would not accept incidents of this nature.
The tragedy has also opened a political front in Madhya Pradesh.
The Congress alleged that illegal liquor operations continue to flourish in the state despite the risks they pose to public safety.
The opposition party accused the state government of failing to act effectively against liquor networks operating outside the law.
It claimed that deaths had occurred across four villages in the Sagar area and sought accountability from the government.
As investigators collect evidence and health workers continue screening residents, authorities are yet to establish conclusively whether contaminated liquor was responsible for all the reported deaths and illnesses.
The forensic findings and magisterial inquiry are expected to provide crucial answers.

सागर जिले में संदिग्ध जहरीली शराब से जुड़ी घटना के बाद प्रशासन और स्वास्थ्य विभाग ने बड़े स्तर पर अभियान शुरू कर दिया है। बराज गांव और आसपास के इलाके में शराब पीने के बाद कई लोगों की तबीयत बिगड़ने की सूचना है।
अब तक कम से कम आठ लोगों की मौत की जानकारी सामने आई है, जबकि अनेक लोग उपचाराधीन हैं।
शनिवार रात शराब पीने के बाद प्रभावित लोगों में उल्टी और जी मिचलाने जैसी परेशानियां सामने आईं।
हालत बिगड़ने पर परिजन उन्हें अस्पताल लेकर पहुंचे। इसी दौरान कई मरीजों की स्थिति गंभीर होने लगी और मौतों की सूचना प्रशासन तक पहुंची।
घटना के कारणों को लेकर अभी अंतिम निष्कर्ष सामने नहीं आया है।
हालांकि, मरीजों में पाए जा रहे लक्षणों ने चिकित्सकों को जहरीले अल्कोहल के सेवन की आशंका की दिशा में जांच करने के लिए प्रेरित किया है।
प्रशासन ने इसी बीच पूरे मामले की मजिस्ट्रियल जांच कराने का फैसला लिया है।
सागर के मुख्य चिकित्सा एवं स्वास्थ्य अधिकारी डॉ. देवेश पाटेरिया के अनुसार, उन्हें आठ से 10 मौतों की जानकारी मिली है।
उनका कहना है कि प्रभावित गांवों में लगातार जांच जारी है और अधिक लोगों के सामने आने पर आंकड़ा बदल भी सकता है।
स्थिति पर नजर रखने के लिए तीन गांवों में चिकित्सकीय टीमें तैनात की गई हैं।
डॉक्टर और नर्स गांवों में घर-घर पहुंच रहे हैं और यह पता लगाने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं कि कहीं कोई ऐसा व्यक्ति तो नहीं है, जिसने शराब पीने के बाद बीमारी के लक्षण महसूस किए हों।
प्रशासन का जोर केवल मरीजों की पहचान तक सीमित नहीं है। जिन लोगों को तत्काल चिकित्सा सहायता की आवश्यकता है, उन्हें पहले स्थानीय स्तर पर उपचार देकर उनकी स्थिति संभाली जा रही है।
इसके बाद आवश्यकता के अनुसार उन्हें बेहतर सुविधाओं वाले अस्पतालों में भेजा जा रहा है।
शनिवार शाम सागर के अस्पताल में एक बेहद गंभीर मरीज को भी लाया गया था। चिकित्सकों के मुताबिक उसकी हालत इतनी खराब थी कि वह ठीक से सांस तक नहीं ले पा रहा था।
करीब सात बजे अस्पताल पहुंचे इस मरीज को बचाने के लिए डॉक्टरों ने प्रयास किया, लेकिन उसकी जान नहीं बचाई जा सकी।
चिकित्सकों के सामने अब सबसे बड़ा सवाल शराब की वास्तविक प्रकृति को लेकर है।
डॉ. पाटेरिया ने मिथाइल अल्कोहल से विषाक्तता की संभावना से इनकार नहीं किया है, लेकिन उन्होंने यह भी स्पष्ट किया कि अभी इसे निश्चित कारण नहीं माना जा सकता। प्रयोगशाला और अन्य जांचों के बाद ही तस्वीर साफ होगी।
स्वास्थ्य विभाग के मुताबिक करीब 25 मरीजों को अब तक उच्च चिकित्सा केंद्रों के लिए भेजा जा चुका है।
स्थानीय अस्पताल में शुरुआती उपचार के बाद उन मरीजों को आगे रेफर किया गया, जिन्हें अधिक विशेषज्ञ चिकित्सा की जरूरत बताई गई।
जिलाधिकारी प्रतिभा पाल ने बताया कि शराब सेवन के बाद बीमारी और मौतों से जुड़ी जानकारी मिलने पर प्रशासन ने तत्काल कार्रवाई शुरू की।
सिविल अस्पताल में जांच और उपचार की व्यवस्था की गई है, जबकि आसपास के क्षेत्रों में एसडीएम स्तर के अधिकारियों और स्वास्थ्यकर्मियों को भी लगाया गया है।
प्रशासन ने उन लोगों से विशेष रूप से सतर्क रहने को कहा है जिन्होंने पिछले 24 से 48 घंटों के दौरान शराब पी है।
यदि उन्हें उल्टी, जी मिचलाना या कोई अन्य असामान्य परेशानी महसूस हो रही है तो उन्हें इंतजार करने के बजाय चिकित्सक से जांच कराने की सलाह दी गई है।
मामले में आबकारी विभाग ने भी अहम कार्रवाई शुरू की है। टीम ने इलाके में पहुंचकर स्थानीय विक्रेता से शराब की कुछ बोतलें जब्त की हैं।
इन नमूनों की प्रयोगशाला में जांच कर यह पता लगाने की कोशिश होगी कि उनमें कोई जहरीला या मिलावटी पदार्थ मौजूद था या नहीं।
जांच एजेंसियां अब शराब की पूरी आपूर्ति श्रृंखला पर नजर डाल रही हैं।
शराब कहां से आई, किस माध्यम से गांव तक पहुंची और क्या जब्त नमूनों का संबंध बीमार हुए लोगों द्वारा पी गई शराब से है—इन सभी पहलुओं की पड़ताल की जा रही है।
मृतकों की पहचान और अन्य विवरणों की भी पुष्टि की जा रही है।
प्रशासन के अनुसार सत्यापन की प्रक्रिया पूरी होने के बाद मृतकों के नाम जारी किए जाएंगे। इस बीच मजिस्ट्रियल जांच के साथ पुलिस और आबकारी विभाग की जांच भी आगे बढ़ रही है।
मुख्यमंत्री मोहन यादव ने घटना के बाद अधिकारियों को कड़ा रुख अपनाने के निर्देश दिए हैं।
उन्होंने मामले की विस्तृत जांच और दोषी पाए जाने वाले लोगों के खिलाफ सख्त कार्रवाई सुनिश्चित करने को कहा है।
घटना को लेकर कांग्रेस ने राज्य सरकार पर राजनीतिक हमला भी बोला है।
विपक्ष ने आरोप लगाया कि मध्य प्रदेश में अवैध शराब के कारोबार पर प्रभावी रोक नहीं लग पा रही है और ऐसे नेटवर्क के कारण आम लोगों की जान खतरे में पड़ रही है।
कांग्रेस ने सागर की घटना को राज्य में जहरीली शराब से जुड़ी गंभीर घटनाओं की कड़ी का हिस्सा बताया और सरकार से जवाबदेही तय करने की मांग की।
पार्टी ने चार गांवों में मौतों का दावा करते हुए सरकार पर अवैध शराब के खिलाफ पर्याप्त कार्रवाई नहीं करने का आरोप लगाया है।
फिलहाल प्रशासन के सामने सबसे अहम चुनौती प्रभावित लोगों तक पहुंचने और नए मामलों की पहचान करने की है।
वहीं, जब्त शराब की फॉरेंसिक रिपोर्ट और मजिस्ट्रियल जांच से यह निर्धारित करने में मदद मिलेगी कि मौतों और बीमारियों के पीछे वास्तव में दूषित या जहरीली शराब की भूमिका थी या नहीं।
