BJP and Congress target Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik over actor’s viral comment as Maharashtra’s language debate heats up
THANE: A joke by actor Sanjay Dutt at a Dahi Handi celebration in Thane has triggered a political dispute over the Marathi language, putting Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik under pressure from opposition leaders and Marathi-language groups.
The controversy centres on an exchange at an event organised by Sanskriti Yuva Pratishthan on September 5. Dutt was sharing the stage with Sarnaik when the Shiv Sena leader asked him to address the gathering in Marathi.
Instead of delivering a speech in the language, Dutt responded humorously by referring to his six years at Yerwada Central Jail in Pune.
Dutt told Sarnaik that despite spending six years in Yerwada, he had still not managed to learn Marathi, although he had picked up a little.
The audience reportedly reacted with laughter, and Sarnaik also appeared amused at the time.
The comment, however, soon moved beyond the celebration and became the subject of political criticism.
BJP MLA Narendra Mehta questioned why the minister appeared to take the actor’s inability to speak Marathi lightly while, according to him, ordinary auto-rickshaw drivers were facing pressure over the language issue.
Mehta used the episode to accuse Sarnaik of adopting inconsistent standards and also described him as a “dummy minister” within the Shiv Sena.
Congress spokesperson Atul Londhe separately attacked the Shiv Sena over what he termed its approach to language politics.
Londhe questioned the party’s contribution to the promotion of Marathi and said the groundwork associated with Marathi receiving Classical Language status had been undertaken during the tenure of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan.
The political reaction comes against the backdrop of Sarnaik’s recent directive concerning commercial drivers in Mumbai.
The transport department had required auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers to have a functional knowledge of Marathi, with permit suspension cited as a possible consequence for those failing to comply.
The move had already become politically sensitive after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis deferred implementation of the requirement by a year.
The decision was seen as a setback for Sarnaik and his party leadership, including Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, according to the criticism surrounding the issue.
The latest controversy has therefore acquired significance beyond Dutt’s remarks.
Critics are using the actor’s exchange with Sarnaik to question whether the government’s expectations regarding Marathi are being applied consistently to public figures and ordinary workers.
Marathi organisations have also criticised Dutt’s position, arguing that the state’s language should not be disregarded in public or formal settings.
Dutt, who has lived in Mumbai for more than five decades, has consequently become the latest public figure drawn into Maharashtra’s long-running and politically charged language debate.
What began as an informal exchange on a festive stage has thus turned into another flashpoint in the state’s continuing discussion over Marathi, public identity and the treatment of people working in Maharashtra.

ठाणे: दही हांडी समारोह में अभिनेता संजय दत्त की मराठी भाषा को लेकर की गई हल्की-फुल्की टिप्पणी अब महाराष्ट्र की सियासत में विवाद का मुद्दा बन गई है।
ठाणे में आयोजित कार्यक्रम के दौरान परिवहन मंत्री प्रताप सरनाईक और संजय दत्त के बीच हुई बातचीत को लेकर विपक्षी दलों ने मंत्री की भूमिका पर सवाल उठाए हैं।
मामला 5 सितंबर को संस्कृति युवा प्रतिष्ठान की ओर से आयोजित दही हांडी कार्यक्रम का है। संजय दत्त और शिवसेना नेता प्रताप सरनाईक एक ही मंच पर मौजूद थे।
कार्यक्रम के दौरान सरनाईक ने अभिनेता से मराठी में लोगों को संबोधित करने के लिए कहा।
इसके जवाब में संजय दत्त ने अपने अंदाज में जेल में बिताए समय का जिक्र करते हुए कहा कि पुणे की यरवदा जेल में छह साल रहने के बावजूद वह मराठी पूरी तरह नहीं सीख सके, हालांकि उन्होंने थोड़ी-बहुत भाषा सीखी थी।
उस समय अभिनेता की टिप्पणी पर माहौल हल्का रहा और मंच पर मौजूद सरनाईक भी मुस्कुराते नजर आए।
लेकिन कार्यक्रम के बाद यही प्रसंग राजनीतिक बहस का कारण बन गया। विपक्षी नेताओं ने इसे महाराष्ट्र में मराठी भाषा को लेकर सरकार की नीतियों से जोड़ते हुए मंत्री से सवाल पूछने शुरू कर दिए।
भाजपा विधायक नरेंद्र मेहता ने इस पूरे मामले को आम नागरिकों के साथ किए जा रहे व्यवहार से जोड़कर निशाना साधा।
उनका कहना था कि एक अभिनेता के मराठी न बोल पाने पर हंसी-मजाक किया जाता है, जबकि आम ऑटो-रिक्शा चालकों पर मराठी को लेकर दबाव बनाया जा रहा है।
मेहता ने इस आधार पर सरनाईक की कार्यशैली पर सवाल उठाए और उन्हें शिवसेना में “डमी मंत्री” तक कह दिया।
कांग्रेस प्रवक्ता अतुल लोंढे ने भी भाषा के मुद्दे को लेकर शिवसेना पर हमला बोला। उन्होंने आरोप लगाया कि पार्टी मराठी भाषा के नाम पर राजनीति कर रही है।
लोंढे ने मराठी को शास्त्रीय भाषा का दर्जा दिलाने की दिशा में किए गए प्रयासों का उल्लेख करते हुए इसका श्रेय पूर्व मुख्यमंत्री पृथ्वीराज चव्हाण के कार्यकाल से जुड़े प्रयासों को दिया।
विवाद का एक अहम पहलू परिवहन विभाग से जुड़े उस हालिया आदेश को माना जा रहा है, जिसमें मुंबई के ऑटो-रिक्शा और टैक्सी चालकों के लिए कामकाज के स्तर पर मराठी समझना जरूरी किए जाने की बात सामने आई थी।
नियम का पालन नहीं करने पर परमिट निलंबित किए जाने की बात भी कही गई थी।
इस फैसले को लेकर पहले से ही राजनीतिक असहजता बनी हुई थी। मुख्यमंत्री देवेंद्र फडणवीस ने इस व्यवस्था को लागू करने की समयसीमा एक साल आगे बढ़ा दी थी।
इससे प्रताप सरनाईक और उनके पार्टी नेतृत्व, जिसमें उपमुख्यमंत्री एकनाथ शिंदे भी शामिल हैं, को राजनीतिक असहजता का सामना करना पड़ा था।
अब संजय दत्त की टिप्पणी ने इसी पुराने विवाद को फिर चर्चा में ला दिया है।
आलोचकों का तर्क है कि यदि आम कामगारों से मराठी के ज्ञान की अपेक्षा की जा रही है तो सार्वजनिक जीवन में चर्चित चेहरों के मामले में भी एक समान दृष्टिकोण होना चाहिए।
मराठी भाषा से जुड़े संगठनों ने भी अभिनेता की टिप्पणी पर आपत्ति जताई है।
उनका कहना है कि सार्वजनिक और औपचारिक संवाद में महाराष्ट्र की स्थानीय भाषा की अनदेखी नहीं की जानी चाहिए।
मुंबई में पांच दशक से अधिक समय से रह रहे संजय दत्त इस टिप्पणी के बाद एक बार फिर राज्य की संवेदनशील भाषा राजनीति के केंद्र में आ गए हैं।
इस तरह दही हांडी के मंच पर शुरू हुआ एक सहज संवाद अब महाराष्ट्र में मराठी भाषा, सार्वजनिक जीवन और भाषा संबंधी अपेक्षाओं को लेकर चल रही राजनीतिक बहस का नया मुद्दा बन गया है।
