Students Need Support, Not Suspicion: Sonam Wangchuk’s Wife Defends Jantar Mantar Protest
New Delhi: Gitanjali Angmo, wife of environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk, on Thursday came out strongly in support of the students participating in the ongoing agitation at Jantar Mantar, saying it was deeply distressing to see young protesters being portrayed in a negative light.
Her remarks came amid allegations of violence surrounding the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) ‘Sansad Chalo’ march and the subsequent police action in the national capital.
Addressing the issue through a post on social media platform X, Angmo urged people not to associate the student movement with incidents of violence reported from other parts of Delhi without credible evidence.
She maintained that the protest at Jantar Mantar had remained peaceful and disciplined since it began.
The Himalayan Institute of Alternatives Ladakh (HIAL) co-founder, who has long been associated with educational initiatives, said it was particularly painful for her as an educator to watch the image of students being damaged in public discourse.
She appealed for a fair assessment of the movement and cautioned against concluding without verified facts.
Angmo praised the conduct of the demonstrators, saying they had shown remarkable patience, discipline and self-restraint despite the difficult circumstances.
According to her, the focus should now shift from questioning the motives of the students to understanding the concerns that brought them onto the streets.
She also questioned why society appeared more willing to doubt the intentions of young people than to listen to the issues they were raising.
Students, she said, deserve protection, respect and an opportunity to be heard rather than being projected as troublemakers for reasons that may suit vested interests.
Her statement follows the July 20 ‘Sansad Chalo’ march, during which Delhi Police prevented thousands of protesters from proceeding towards Parliament by using tear gas and baton charges after the situation escalated.
The police maintained that the action was necessary to control the crowd and enforce law and order.
Following the crackdown, leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party alleged that attempts were being made to portray the student movement as violent by linking it with unrelated incidents reported elsewhere in the city.
Delhi Police, however, rejected those allegations and defended its handling of the protest.
The CJP-led campaign began on June 20 with demands for accountability over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations.
The protesters have also called for reforms in the education system and sought the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the controversy.
Sonam Wangchuk joined the movement on June 28 and subsequently launched an indefinite hunger strike in solidarity with the students.
He is currently undergoing treatment at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram.
According to those associated with the campaign, Wangchuk has expressed his willingness to end the fast if the Centre assures that peaceful participants in the movement will not face punitive action.
