Suchika Tariyal Makes History With India’s First Asian Games MMA Medal

Haryana fighter secures historic bronze at Aichi-Nagoya Games after controversial semifinal; a career spanning judo, ju-jitsu and MMA reaches another landmark

JAPAN, NAGOYA: Suchika Tariyal created a new chapter in Indian combat sports on Monday, becoming the country’s first Asian Games medallist in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) with a bronze in the women’s traditional 60kg category.

The 36-year-old Indian fighter’s historic achievement, however, came after a dramatic semifinal against Singapore’s Hui Hoon Teo.

The closely contested bout ended level after regulation time, and the result was eventually decided under the competition’s weight-based tiebreak rule.

Teo, who was lighter at the morning weigh-in, was awarded the semifinal, sending Tariyal into the bronze-medal position.

Reports said the difference between the two fighters was about 700 grams.

The decision proved deeply emotional for Tariyal. She initially hesitated when the fighters were called forward for the official announcement and later broke down in tears after Teo was declared the winner.

Despite the disappointment, Tariyal had already secured a place on the podium by reaching the semifinals.

Her medal came in the first edition of the Asian Games to feature MMA.

The sport was introduced in a modified traditional format at the Aichi-Nagoya Games, making Tariyal’s bronze the first MMA medal won by an Indian athlete at the continental event.

Quarterfinal victory secured historic medal.

Tariyal entered the semifinals after defeating Mongolia’s Altanchimeg Baigalmaa 2-0 in the quarterfinals on Sunday.

That victory guaranteed India at least a bronze medal in MMA, allowing Tariyal to enter the next stage of the competition with a historic achievement already secured.

Her approach in the bout drew heavily on her experience across several combat disciplines, including takedowns, ground control and submission techniques.

The medal also underlined the breadth of Tariyal’s sporting career, which has extended well beyond MMA.

From judo to MMA

Tariyal first competed in MMA in 2017, but later stepped away from the discipline for several years while continuing her career in other combat sports.

Her return to professional MMA came in 2024, when she signed a multi-year agreement with BRAVE Combat Federation in the women’s strawweight division.

She subsequently returned to professional competition at BRAVE CF 92 in Bahrain in December 2024.

Before establishing herself in MMA, Tariyal had already built a substantial record in judo and other martial arts. She represented India at major international competitions and also competed in ju-jitsu and kurash.

A sporting journey that began at 12

Tariyal, who comes from Rohtak, Haryana, began her martial-arts journey when she was 12 years old. An incident of eve-teasing prompted her to take up judo, initially as a means of self-defence.

What began as a way to protect herself eventually developed into an international sporting career. She went on to compete for India at more than 20 international events and established herself as a prominent judoka.

She is an eight-time national judo champion and has also won major international honours, including gold medals at the 2019 Commonwealth Judo Championships and the 2019 South Asian Games.

At the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, she represented India in the women’s 57kg judo category. She also reached the bronze-medal bout, narrowly missing out on a podium finish.

Beyond competition

Tariyal’s professional life has also extended into public service and sports administration.

She was appointed as a Head Constable in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and later joined the Haryana Department of Sports as a junior coach.

Her journey from a young girl taking up judo for self-defence to an athlete who has now delivered India’s first Asian Games MMA medal has crossed several combat disciplines and multiple phases of competition.

The bronze in Aichi-Nagoya adds another significant achievement to that career and gives India a landmark result in a sport making its Asian Games debut.
