Supreme Court Refuses to Stay Sonam Raghuvanshi’s Bail in Meghalaya Honeymoon Murder Case
The Supreme Court on Friday declined to put on hold the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the sensational Meghalaya honeymoon murder case.
The decision came despite strong objections from the Meghalaya government, which argued that the allegations against her were extremely serious and warranted judicial intervention.
A Bench comprising Justice M.M. Sundresh and Justice Sheel Nagu observed that although certain aspects of the Meghalaya High Court’s order raised concerns, there was no immediate reason to suspend the relief already granted.
The court noted that Sonam Raghuvanshi had already been released from judicial custody and was currently staying in Shillong while fully complying with the bail conditions imposed by the trial court.
Representing the Meghalaya government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta urged the apex court to stay the bail order.
He argued that the accusations against Sonam involved a grave criminal offence and maintained that an accused facing such serious charges should not be granted bail merely on procedural or technical considerations.
However, after hearing the submissions, the Supreme Court chose not to interfere with the High Court’s order at this stage.
Background of the Case
The case dates back to May 2025, when Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife Sonam Raghuvanshi travelled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon shortly after their marriage.
The couple suddenly went missing during the trip, triggering a massive search operation by local authorities.
Days later, Raja’s body was recovered from a deep gorge near Sohra (Cherrapunji), while Sonam was initially reported missing, leading to widespread concern and speculation.
As the investigation progressed, police claimed that the case took a dramatic turn after evidence allegedly suggested that Raja’s murder was part of a pre-planned conspiracy.
Investigators alleged that Sonam Raghuvanshi had orchestrated the killing with the help of hired assailants.
She was later traced and taken into custody, following which several other accused were also arrested.
The case attracted nationwide attention because of its shocking nature, with investigators alleging that what initially appeared to be a honeymoon tragedy was, in fact, a carefully planned murder plot.
The investigation remains underway, and the trial is expected to determine the role and culpability of all those accused in the case.
While the Supreme Court has declined to stay Sonam Raghuvanshi’s bail for now, the criminal proceedings against her and the co-accused will continue before the competent court.
मेघालय हनीमून मर्डर केस: सोनम रघुवंशी की जमानत पर रोक लगाने से सुप्रीम कोर्ट का इनकार
सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने शुक्रवार को चर्चित मेघालय हनीमून मर्डर केस की मुख्य आरोपी सोनम रघुवंशी को मिली जमानत पर रोक लगाने से इनकार कर दिया। यह फैसला उस समय आया जब मेघालय सरकार ने अदालत से कहा कि आरोपी के खिलाफ लगाए गए आरोप अत्यंत गंभीर हैं और ऐसे मामले में जमानत को जारी नहीं रहने दिया जाना चाहिए।
न्यायमूर्ति एम.एम. सुंदरश और न्यायमूर्ति शील नागू की पीठ ने सुनवाई के दौरान कहा कि मेघालय हाईकोर्ट के आदेश के कुछ पहलुओं को लेकर अदालत के मन में कुछ संदेह अवश्य हैं, लेकिन वर्तमान परिस्थितियों में जमानत पर रोक लगाने का कोई पर्याप्त आधार नहीं बनता।
पीठ ने यह भी उल्लेख किया कि सोनम रघुवंशी पहले ही न्यायिक हिरासत से रिहा हो चुकी हैं और ट्रायल कोर्ट द्वारा निर्धारित सभी शर्तों का पालन करते हुए फिलहाल शिलांग में रह रही हैं।
मेघालय सरकार की ओर से पेश सॉलिसिटर जनरल तुषार मेहता ने अदालत से आग्रह किया कि हाईकोर्ट के आदेश पर रोक लगाई जाए। उन्होंने दलील दी कि सोनम रघुवंशी पर बेहद गंभीर अपराध के आरोप हैं और ऐसे मामलों में केवल तकनीकी या प्रक्रियागत आधार पर जमानत नहीं दी जानी चाहिए।
हालांकि, दोनों पक्षों की दलीलें सुनने के बाद सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने फिलहाल हाईकोर्ट के आदेश में हस्तक्षेप करने से इंकार कर दिया।
क्या है पूरा मामला?
इंदौर निवासी कारोबारी राजा रघुवंशी अपनी पत्नी सोनम रघुवंशी के साथ शादी के बाद हनीमून मनाने मेघालय गए थे। यात्रा के दौरान दोनों अचानक लापता हो गए, जिसके बाद पुलिस और बचाव दल ने बड़े स्तर पर खोज अभियान चलाया।
कुछ दिनों बाद सोहरा (चेरापूंजी) के पास एक गहरी खाई से राजा रघुवंशी का शव बरामद हुआ, जबकि सोनम शुरुआत में लापता बताई गई थीं। इस घटना ने पूरे देश का ध्यान अपनी ओर खींच लिया।
जांच आगे बढ़ने पर पुलिस ने दावा किया कि यह कोई सामान्य हादसा नहीं बल्कि सुनियोजित हत्या की साजिश थी। जांच एजेंसियों के अनुसार, सोनम रघुवंशी पर आरोप है कि उन्होंने कथित तौर पर सुपारी देकर अपने पति की हत्या की योजना बनाई।
बाद में उन्हें गिरफ्तार किया गया और इस मामले में कई अन्य आरोपियों को भी हिरासत में लिया गया। पुलिस का दावा है कि प्रारंभिक जांच में जो मामला एक रहस्यमयी गुमशुदगी लग रहा था, वह बाद में कथित हत्या की साजिश में बदल गया।
फिलहाल इस मामले की जांच और न्यायिक प्रक्रिया जारी हैं। सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने भले ही सोनम रघुवंशी की जमानत पर रोक लगाने से इनकार कर दिया हो, लेकिन उनके खिलाफ दर्ज आपराधिक मामले की सुनवाई आगे भी जारी रहेगी और अदालत में सभी आरोपों की कानूनी जांच की जाएगी।
