E20 Petrol May Slightly Reduce Mileage, Says Hardeep Singh Puri; Government Dismisses Vehicle Damage Concerns
The Central government has acknowledged that E20 petrol, which contains 20 per cent ethanol, may lead to a marginal reduction in the fuel efficiency of some vehicles.
However, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri clarified that any slight drop in mileage cannot be attributed solely to ethanol blending, as several other factors also influence a vehicle’s fuel economy.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Puri dismissed concerns that ethanol-blended fuel would significantly affect vehicle performance.
He explained that ethanol is widely used even in high-performance racing cars because it improves acceleration and reduces engine knocking.
While accepting that mileage could decline slightly, he stressed that the variation would be minimal and could result from multiple operating conditions rather than the fuel alone.
The minister also stated that the rollout of E20 petrol was not a unilateral decision.
According to him, the government introduced the blended fuel only after extensive consultations with all key stakeholders, including the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), ensuring that technical and industry concerns were carefully examined before implementation.
Responding to rumours surrounding vehicle insurance, Puri rejected claims that insurance companies would refuse coverage for vehicles using E20 fuel.
He said insurers have already clarified that there is no change in insurance protection simply because a vehicle runs on ethanol-blended petrol.
Highlighting India’s evolving transportation ecosystem, the minister said the country has sufficient scope for multiple fuel technologies to grow simultaneously.
He noted that electric vehicles, ethanol-blended fuel vehicles, hybrid models, and CNG-powered automobiles all have an important role in India’s future mobility landscape.
He added that the current ethanol blending level stands at 20 per cent, and any proposal to increase it to 25 per cent would be implemented only after comprehensive scientific testing and technical validation.
Earlier, the government had notified Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specifications for petrol blended with 22, 25, 27 and 30 per cent ethanol while also exempting these fuel grades from excise duty.
However, the Petroleum Ministry later clarified that these approvals were purely regulatory in nature and should not be interpreted as an immediate launch of higher ethanol-blended petrol across the country.
As the government continues promoting ethanol-blended petrol as a cleaner and more sustainable alternative fuel, concerns among motorists regarding possible engine damage and reduced mileage have grown in recent months.
Seeking to address these fears, the Petroleum Ministry issued a detailed statement on social media platform X, asserting that claims linking ethanol blending to vehicle damage or major inconvenience are not supported by scientific evidence.
The ministry maintained that ethanol blending is a thoroughly researched, environmentally responsible initiative designed to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, lower emissions, and strengthen India’s energy security.
It reiterated that the programme offers long-term economic and environmental benefits while remaining safe for vehicles approved to use E20 fuel.

केंद्र सरकार ने स्वीकार किया है कि 20 प्रतिशत इथेनॉल मिश्रित E20 पेट्रोल के उपयोग से कुछ वाहनों की माइलेज में मामूली कमी आ सकती है। हालांकि, केंद्रीय पेट्रोलियम एवं प्राकृतिक गैस मंत्री हरदीप सिंह पुरी ने स्पष्ट किया कि ईंधन दक्षता में होने वाली हल्की गिरावट का कारण केवल इथेनॉल मिश्रण नहीं है, बल्कि वाहन की स्थिति, ड्राइविंग शैली और अन्य कई तकनीकी कारक भी इसके लिए जिम्मेदार हो सकते हैं।
नई दिल्ली में आयोजित एक प्रेस वार्ता के दौरान पुरी ने कहा कि E20 पेट्रोल को लेकर फैल रही आशंकाएं वास्तविक तथ्यों पर आधारित नहीं हैं।
उन्होंने बताया कि इथेनॉल का उपयोग दुनिया भर में रेसिंग कारों तक में किया जाता है क्योंकि इससे वाहन की रफ्तार बेहतर होती है और इंजन में होने वाली नॉकिंग की समस्या भी कम होती है। उन्होंने माना कि माइलेज में हल्की कमी संभव है, लेकिन यह बहुत सीमित होगी और इसके पीछे कई अन्य कारण भी हो सकते हैं।
केंद्रीय मंत्री ने कहा कि E20 पेट्रोल को लागू करने से पहले सरकार ने सभी प्रमुख हितधारकों से विस्तृत चर्चा की थी। उन्होंने बताया कि सोसाइटी ऑफ इंडियन ऑटोमोबाइल मैन्युफैक्चरर्स (SIAM) तथा ऑटोमोटिव रिसर्च एसोसिएशन ऑफ इंडिया (ARAI) सहित विशेषज्ञ संस्थाओं से परामर्श लेने के बाद ही इस ईंधन को देश में लागू किया गया, ताकि तकनीकी और सुरक्षा संबंधी सभी पहलुओं का परीक्षण सुनिश्चित किया जा सके।
वाहनों के बीमा को लेकर चल रही अफवाहों पर भी मंत्री ने स्थिति स्पष्ट की। उन्होंने कहा कि कुछ लोग यह दावा कर रहे हैं कि E20 पेट्रोल इस्तेमाल करने पर बीमा कंपनियां क्लेम स्वीकार नहीं करेंगी, जबकि बीमा कंपनियां पहले ही साफ कर चुकी हैं कि इथेनॉल मिश्रित पेट्रोल के उपयोग से वाहन की बीमा सुरक्षा पर किसी प्रकार का कोई प्रभाव नहीं पड़ता।
भारत में विभिन्न ईंधन तकनीकों के भविष्य पर बोलते हुए पुरी ने कहा कि देश का ऑटोमोबाइल बाजार इतना व्यापक है कि इलेक्ट्रिक वाहन, इथेनॉल मिश्रित ईंधन वाले वाहन, हाइब्रिड मॉडल और सीएनजी वाहन सभी एक साथ विकसित हो सकते हैं।
उन्होंने बताया कि फिलहाल देश में 20 प्रतिशत इथेनॉल मिश्रण लागू है और यदि भविष्य में इसे 25 प्रतिशत तक बढ़ाने का निर्णय लिया जाता है, तो उससे पहले सभी आवश्यक वैज्ञानिक परीक्षण और तकनीकी मूल्यांकन पूरे किए जाएंगे।
इससे पहले सरकार ने भारतीय मानक ब्यूरो (BIS) के तहत 22, 25, 27 और 30 प्रतिशत इथेनॉल मिश्रित पेट्रोल के लिए मानक अधिसूचित किए थे तथा इन पर उत्पाद शुल्क में छूट भी दी थी। हालांकि बाद में पेट्रोलियम मंत्रालय ने स्पष्ट किया कि यह केवल नियामकीय मंजूरी है और इसका अर्थ यह नहीं है कि अधिक इथेनॉल मिश्रित पेट्रोल को तुरंत बाजार में उतारा जाएगा।
सरकार जहां इथेनॉल मिश्रित पेट्रोल को स्वच्छ, पर्यावरण-अनुकूल और आयातित ईंधन पर निर्भरता कम करने वाले विकल्प के रूप में बढ़ावा दे रही है, वहीं आम उपभोक्ताओं के बीच इंजन को नुकसान और माइलेज घटने जैसी चिंताएं भी लगातार बढ़ रही हैं।
इन आशंकाओं को दूर करने के लिए पेट्रोलियम मंत्रालय ने सोशल मीडिया मंच X पर विस्तृत जानकारी साझा करते हुए कहा कि इथेनॉल मिश्रण से वाहनों को नुकसान होने या उपभोक्ताओं को किसी प्रकार की गंभीर असुविधा होने के दावों का कोई वैज्ञानिक आधार नहीं है।
मंत्रालय ने दोहराया कि इथेनॉल मिश्रण एक वैज्ञानिक रूप से प्रमाणित, पर्यावरण हितैषी और दीर्घकालिक ऊर्जा सुरक्षा को मजबूत करने वाली पहल है।
इसके माध्यम से प्रदूषण में कमी आएगी, जीवाश्म ईंधन पर निर्भरता घटेगी और देश को आर्थिक एवं पर्यावरणीय दोनों स्तरों पर दीर्घकालिक लाभ प्राप्त होंगे, जबकि E20 के लिए स्वीकृत वाहनों की सुरक्षा और प्रदर्शन पर इसका प्रतिकूल प्रभाव नहीं पड़ेगा।
