Surendra Koli’s Final Days in Haridwar: A New Name, Short-Lived Tea Stall and a Death That Revealed His Identity
Nithari case figure had been living as ‘Sada Ram’ after his release; police are investigating his death inside a Bhupatwala tea stall.
HARIDWAR: For nearly a month, Jai Kashyap knew the man only as Sada Ram, a stranger who said he had come from Almora in search of a place to live and some work.
Kashyap helped him find both, unaware that the quiet newcomer had once been at the centre of one of India’s most notorious criminal cases.
The man was later identified as Surendra Kumar Koli, whose name had become synonymous with the 2006 Nithari killings case.
Koli was found hanging inside a small tea stall in Haridwar’s Bhupatwala area on Friday.
Police have treated the death as a suspected suicide while the circumstances are being examined.
No suicide note was found.
Kashyap, 28, told reporters that he discovered Koli’s real identity only after his death. Until then, he said, he knew him simply as Sada Ram, a man who had described himself as being from Almora.
The two first came into contact at a friend’s house.
Kashyap was asked to help the newcomer find accommodation, and he subsequently arranged a room for him in Roshanabad.
That arrangement lasted only a few days. When the landlord asked for identity documents, Koli reportedly hesitated to provide his Aadhaar card and eventually moved out.
He later told Kashyap that he intended to shift towards Haridwar and operate a tea business.
Another acquaintance, Dharmender Kaushik, apparently helped make that plan possible by arranging a shop in his own name. Koli eventually moved into the stall and began selling tea and biscuits.
His attempt at establishing a livelihood was extremely brief. Police sources said Koli had reached Haridwar roughly six weeks before his death and had taken up security work at a factory.
After leaving that employment, he reportedly obtained another guard’s job at an apartment complex with Kaushik’s assistance, but that position too did not last.
Only a few days before his death, Koli began operating the small tea stall near Lal Mata Temple on Bhupatwala Road.
He brought his belongings from Roshanabad and is believed to have been staying inside the shop itself.
Kaushik discovered him after the stall remained shut. When repeated knocking produced no response, he opened the shutter and found Koli inside. Police were informed soon afterwards.
Haridwar City Circle Officer Shishupal Singh Negi said the available circumstances initially pointed towards suicide.
Investigators did not find a note at the scene, while the body was sent for post-mortem examination.
A diary containing what appeared to be routine expenditure and work-related entries was also taken into police custody.
From Nithari accused to acquitted man
Koli’s death brings renewed attention to the long and controversial legal history of the Nithari killings, a case that began attracting national attention after the disappearance of women and children from the Nithari area of Noida.
The investigation intensified in December 2006 when human remains and belongings believed to be connected to missing persons were recovered from an area close to the residence of businessman Moninder Singh Pandher in Sector 31, Noida.
Koli, who had worked as a domestic helper at Pandher’s house, was arrested along with Pandher.
The investigation was subsequently transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation, which filed chargesheets in multiple cases arising from the disappearances and alleged killings.
Koli was convicted in several of those cases and at one stage faced the death penalty.
His legal battle continued for years, with different courts examining the evidence and circumstances surrounding the prosecution.
A major turning point came in October 2023, when the Allahabad High Court acquitted Koli in 12 cases and Pandher in two, citing problems including deficiencies in the prosecution evidence and procedural issues.
The acquittals were subsequently challenged before the Supreme Court.
In 2025, the Supreme Court dismissed 14 appeals challenging the acquittals of Koli and Pandher. The court’s decision effectively ended the remaining criminal proceedings against Koli arising from the Nithari cases.
After spending years in custody and living under the shadow of the Nithari case, Koli was therefore a free man when he arrived in Haridwar.
There, away from the national attention that had followed him for nearly two decades, he adopted the name Sada Ram, took up short-term jobs and eventually tried to make a living from a small tea stall.
The man who had once been a central figure in a case that dominated India’s crime headlines had, in his final days, become largely anonymous in the city. It was only his death that brought his real identity back into public view.
Police are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the death.

हरिद्वार: हरिद्वार में एक अनजान व्यक्ति को रहने और काम तलाशने में मदद करने वाले जय कश्यप को यह अंदाजा भी नहीं था कि जिस शख्स को वह ‘सदाराम’ के नाम से जानता है, उसका अतीत देश के सबसे चर्चित आपराधिक मामलों में से एक से जुड़ा है।
शुक्रवार को भूपतवाला इलाके में एक छोटी-सी चाय की दुकान के भीतर उस व्यक्ति का शव मिलने के बाद उसकी पहचान सुरेंद्र कुमार कोली के रूप में हुई।
कोली वर्ष 2006 के चर्चित निठारी हत्याकांड मामले में लंबे समय तक आरोपी रहा था। पुलिस ने प्रथम दृष्टया मौत को आत्महत्या माना है, हालांकि मामले की जांच जारी है। मौके से कोई सुसाइड नोट नहीं मिला।
28 वर्षीय जय कश्यप ने बताया कि उसे कोली की वास्तविक पहचान उसकी मौत के बाद ही पता चली। उससे मुलाकात के समय वह खुद को सदाराम बताता था और कहता था कि वह अल्मोड़ा से आया है तथा रहने के लिए कमरा और रोजगार तलाश रहा है।
कश्यप ने एक परिचित के माध्यम से उससे मुलाकात के बाद उसके लिए रोशनाबाद में रहने की व्यवस्था कराई।
कुछ दिनों तक वह वहां रहा, लेकिन मकान मालिक द्वारा पहचान संबंधी दस्तावेज मांगे जाने पर उसने कथित तौर पर आधार कार्ड देने में आनाकानी की और कमरा छोड़ दिया।
इसके बाद कोली ने कश्यप को बताया कि वह हरिद्वार की ओर जा रहा है और वहां चाय की दुकान चलाने की योजना बना रहा है। एक अन्य परिचित धर्मेंद्र कौशिक ने कथित तौर पर अपने नाम पर दुकान किराये पर लेकर उसे काम करने का मौका दिया।
हरिद्वार पहुंचने के बाद कोली ने शुरुआत में सुरक्षा गार्ड की नौकरी की। पुलिस सूत्रों के मुताबिक, उसने एक फैक्ट्री में कुछ समय काम किया और नौकरी छोड़ने के बाद एक अपार्टमेंट परिसर में भी सुरक्षा गार्ड के तौर पर काम किया। यह नौकरी भी ज्यादा समय तक नहीं चली।
इसके बाद भूपतवाला में लाल माता मंदिर के सामने एक छोटी चाय की दुकान उसके लिए रोजी-रोटी का नया जरिया बनी। बताया जाता है कि मौत से कुछ दिन पहले ही उसने दुकान शुरू की थी। वह रोशनाबाद से अपना सामान लाकर दुकान में ही रहने लगा था।
दुकान का शटर बंद मिलने पर धर्मेंद्र कौशिक को संदेह हुआ। काफी देर तक आवाज देने के बावजूद भीतर से कोई प्रतिक्रिया नहीं मिलने पर उसने दुकान खोली, जहां कोली मृत मिला। इसके बाद पुलिस को सूचना दी गई।
हरिद्वार सिटी के सर्किल ऑफिसर शिशुपाल सिंह नेगी के मुताबिक, घटनास्थल की शुरुआती परिस्थितियां आत्महत्या की ओर इशारा करती हैं।
पुलिस को कोई सुसाइड नोट नहीं मिला है और शव को पोस्टमार्टम के लिए भेजा गया है।
दुकान से मिली एक डायरी भी जांच के लिए कब्जे में ली गई है, जिसमें रोजमर्रा के खर्च और कामकाज से जुड़े हिसाब-किताब होने की बात सामने आई है।
निठारी कांड ने बदली थी कोली की जिंदगी
सुरेंद्र कोली की मौत ने एक बार फिर निठारी हत्याकांड की लंबी कानूनी कहानी को चर्चा में ला दिया है। नोएडा के निठारी इलाके से महिलाओं और बच्चों के लापता होने की घटनाओं के बाद वर्ष 2006 में यह मामला देशभर में सुर्खियों में आया था।
दिसंबर 2006 में नोएडा के सेक्टर-31 में कारोबारी मोनिंदर सिंह पंढेर के घर के पास मानव अवशेष और लापता लोगों से जुड़ी वस्तुएं मिलने के बाद जांच ने नया मोड़ लिया। पंढेर के घर में घरेलू सहायक के रूप में काम कर चुके कोली और पंढेर को गिरफ्तार किया गया।
बाद में मामले की जांच केंद्रीय जांच ब्यूरो यानी सीबीआई को सौंप दी गई। एजेंसी ने अलग-अलग मामलों में जांच आगे बढ़ाते हुए कई आरोपपत्र दाखिल किए।
कोली को निठारी से जुड़े कई मामलों में दोषी ठहराया गया और उसे मृत्युदंड तक सुनाया गया। इसके बाद वर्षों तक अदालतों में उसके मामलों की सुनवाई चलती रही।
अक्टूबर 2023 में इलाहाबाद हाईकोर्ट ने कोली को 12 मामलों में और पंढेर को दो मामलों में बरी कर दिया।
अदालत ने अभियोजन के साक्ष्यों की कमियों और प्रक्रिया से जुड़े सवालों सहित कई पहलुओं को अपने फैसले में महत्व दिया। बाद में इन बरी किए जाने के फैसलों को सुप्रीम कोर्ट में चुनौती दी गई।
जुलाई 2025 में सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने कोली और पंढेर को बरी किए जाने के खिलाफ दाखिल 14 अपीलों को खारिज कर दिया। इस फैसले के बाद निठारी मामलों में कोली के खिलाफ चल रही शेष कानूनी कार्यवाही का भी अंत हो गया।
लंबे समय तक जेल में रहने और लगातार कानूनी लड़ाई का सामना करने के बाद कोली रिहा होकर हरिद्वार पहुंचा था। यहां उसने अपनी पहचान सदाराम के रूप में रखी, कुछ समय अलग-अलग नौकरियां कीं और अंततः चाय की छोटी दुकान शुरू कर दी।
हरिद्वार में उसके आखिरी दिन बेहद सामान्य दिखाई देते रहे। स्थानीय लोगों के लिए वह बस रोजमर्रा की जिंदगी शुरू करने की कोशिश कर रहा एक व्यक्ति था। लेकिन उसकी मौत के बाद सामने आई पहचान ने उसके अतीत को फिर से राष्ट्रीय चर्चा के केंद्र में ला दिया।
पुलिस अब उसकी मौत से जुड़े सभी पहलुओं की जांच कर रही है।
