Sonam Wangchuk to Lead 20-Km Leh March on Eve of Ladakh Protest Anniversary
Symbolic padyatra planned for September 23 as demands over Ladakh’s political representation, environment and constitutional safeguards return to the spotlight.
LEH: A year after deadly unrest shook Leh, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk is preparing to return to the streets with a symbolic 20-km padyatra, putting Ladakh’s long-running demands for greater political safeguards and protection of its environment back in focus.
The march will take place in Leh on September 23, a day before the first anniversary of the September 24, 2025 violence in which four civilians lost their lives.
Wangchuk has said the following day will be observed as “Shaheed Diwas” in remembrance of those who died.
The programme is shorter than the march originally envisaged.
The initial plan involved travelling from Kargil towards Leh, but falling temperatures and the difficult weather conditions in the high-altitude region led organisers to scale it down to a 20-km symbolic procession.
The proposed demonstration comes as negotiations over Ladakh’s political future continue.
Local representative bodies have been pressing for constitutional safeguards, greater democratic representation and protection of the region’s land, culture and environment.
The anniversary has also brought the issue of compensation for last year’s victims back into focus.
The Ladakh administration has sanctioned a package worth Rs 1.52 crore for families of those killed and civilians injured during the September 2025 violence.
Under the approved package, the families of each of the four deceased persons will receive Rs 15 lakh.
Those classified as having suffered major injuries will receive Rs 3 lakh each, while those with minor injuries will be eligible for Rs 1 lakh each.
The official breakdown covers 24 people with major injuries and 20 with minor injuries.
The compensation decision came after months of demands from Ladakh’s representative organisations for assistance to the families affected by the violence.
The administration has described the payments as humanitarian support for those who suffered loss and injury.
The September 24, 2025 confrontation followed a period of protests over demands including statehood for Ladakh and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
Tensions escalated after a shutdown was called amid concerns over the health of activists participating in a hunger strike.
The subsequent clashes in Leh resulted in four deaths and dozens of injuries.
Authorities said police opened fire after the situation became violent, while the protest movement continued to demand greater constitutional and political safeguards for the Union Territory.
Wangchuk himself was detained under the National Security Act shortly after the unrest.
According to the Union government, his detention began on September 26, 2025. The Ministry of Home Affairs revoked the detention with immediate effect in March 2026.
The upcoming march is therefore being planned against a backdrop of both remembrance and renewed political engagement.
The Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance have continued discussions with the Centre on issues concerning Ladakh’s governance and constitutional protection.
For the organisers, the September 23 procession is intended to keep the focus on Ladakh’s cultural identity, ecological concerns and demands for a greater say in the region’s administration.
Wangchuk has urged people to participate in the march and attend the commemorative programme on September 24.
The anniversary comes at a sensitive moment for Ladakh, where political dialogue and public mobilisation are continuing simultaneously.
The 20-km march is expected to serve as a reminder of last year’s deaths while bringing renewed attention to the unresolved issues at the heart of the region’s movement.

23 सितंबर को लेह में प्रतीकात्मक मार्च, अगले दिन 2025 की हिंसा में मारे गए चार लोगों की याद में मनाया जाएगा ‘शहीद दिवस’
लेह: लद्दाख में पिछले वर्ष हुई हिंसा की पहली बरसी से पहले पर्यावरण कार्यकर्ता सोनम वांगचुक एक बार फिर सड़क पर उतरने जा रहे हैं। वह 23 सितंबर को लेह में 20 किलोमीटर की प्रतीकात्मक पदयात्रा का नेतृत्व करेंगे।
इसके अगले दिन 24 सितंबर को पिछले वर्ष जान गंवाने वाले चार नागरिकों की स्मृति में ‘शहीद दिवस’ मनाया जाएगा।
इस बार की पदयात्रा पहले से तय कार्यक्रम की तुलना में काफी सीमित होगी। मूल योजना कारगिल से लेह तक मार्च निकालने की थी, लेकिन लद्दाख में तेजी से गिरते तापमान और मौसम की कठिन परिस्थितियों को देखते हुए इसे 20 किलोमीटर तक सीमित कर दिया गया है।
वांगचुक के नेतृत्व में होने वाला यह कार्यक्रम ऐसे समय हो रहा है जब लद्दाख की राजनीतिक और संवैधानिक मांगों को लेकर केंद्र के साथ बातचीत का दौर जारी है।
स्थानीय संगठनों की प्रमुख मांगों में अधिक लोकतांत्रिक प्रतिनिधित्व, संवैधानिक सुरक्षा और क्षेत्र की भूमि, संस्कृति तथा पर्यावरण का संरक्षण शामिल है।
पिछले वर्ष की हिंसा में मारे गए लोगों और घायलों के लिए आर्थिक सहायता का मुद्दा भी हाल में फिर सामने आया है।
लद्दाख प्रशासन ने प्रभावित परिवारों और घायलों के लिए कुल 1.52 करोड़ रुपये के मुआवजा पैकेज को मंजूरी दी है।
प्रशासन के अनुसार, चार मृतकों के परिजनों को 15-15 लाख रुपये दिए जाएंगे। गंभीर रूप से घायल 24 लोगों के लिए तीन-तीन लाख रुपये और मामूली चोटों से प्रभावित 20 लोगों के लिए एक-एक लाख रुपये निर्धारित किए गए हैं।
मुआवजे की घोषणा उन मांगों के बीच हुई है जिनमें पिछले वर्ष की हिंसा से प्रभावित परिवारों के लिए आर्थिक सहायता की मांग लगातार उठती रही थी।
प्रशासन ने इस राशि को प्रभावित परिवारों और घायलों के लिए मानवीय सहायता और समर्थन के रूप में बताया है।
24 सितंबर 2025 को लेह में हालात उस समय बिगड़ गए थे जब लद्दाख को राज्य का दर्जा देने और संविधान की छठी अनुसूची के तहत सुरक्षा देने समेत विभिन्न मांगों को लेकर चल रहा आंदोलन हिंसक हो गया था।
इससे पहले क्षेत्र में लंबे समय से शांतिपूर्ण आंदोलन और भूख हड़ताल चल रहे थे। दो बुजुर्ग कार्यकर्ताओं की तबीयत बिगड़ने के बाद बंद का आह्वान किया गया, जिसके बाद स्थिति और तनावपूर्ण होती चली गई।
हिंसा के दौरान चार लोगों की मौत हुई और बड़ी संख्या में लोग घायल हुए। अधिकारियों के अनुसार, स्थिति नियंत्रण से बाहर होने के बाद पुलिस ने गोलीबारी की थी।
घटना के बाद लद्दाख की राजनीतिक और संवैधानिक मांगों को लेकर आंदोलन और तेज हो गया।
इस घटनाक्रम के बाद सोनम वांगचुक को राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा कानून के तहत हिरासत में लिया गया था। गृह मंत्रालय के अनुसार, उनकी हिरासत 26 सितंबर 2025 को शुरू हुई थी।
मार्च 2026 में केंद्र सरकार ने उनकी हिरासत तत्काल प्रभाव से समाप्त करने का फैसला किया।
अब एक साल बाद प्रस्तावित पदयात्रा केवल पिछले वर्ष की घटनाओं की याद तक सीमित नहीं है। इसके जरिए लद्दाख की राजनीतिक व्यवस्था, पर्यावरण संरक्षण और संवैधानिक अधिकारों से जुड़े मुद्दों को फिर सार्वजनिक चर्चा के केंद्र में लाने की कोशिश की जा रही है।
वांगचुक ने लोगों से 23 सितंबर की पदयात्रा में शामिल होने और 24 सितंबर को आयोजित स्मृति कार्यक्रम में हिस्सा लेने की अपील की है।
लद्दाख में केंद्र और स्थानीय प्रतिनिधि संगठनों के बीच संवाद के साथ-साथ जन आंदोलन की गतिविधियां भी जारी हैं।
ऐसे में 20 किलोमीटर की यह पदयात्रा पिछले वर्ष की घटनाओं की स्मृति के साथ क्षेत्र की लंबित राजनीतिक और संवैधानिक मांगों को फिर सामने लाने वाला प्रमुख कार्यक्रम बन सकती है।
