Tension becomes ugly between two communities in Hazaribagh following Ram Navami procession

Tensions flared between two communities at the Jhanda Chowk area of Hazaribagh late Tuesday night over songs being played during the procession ahead of the Ram Navami festival, police said.

The clash occurred when the procession reached the nearby Jama Masjid in the Sadar police station limits, and the dispute occurred over the songs played in the procession, allegedly escalating into stone pelting and vandalism from both sides, police said.

There have been no detentions or arrests in the case so far.

As Ram Navmi falls on April 6, hundreds of Akhadas have started carrying the “Mangala procession” every Tuesday. The procession is carried out every week from Holi until Ram Navami celebrations.

Talking to The Indian Express, the Deputy Commissioner of Hazaribagh, Nancy Sahay, said, “The dispute started due to a certain objectionable song played in the procession, following which it escalated into mild stone pelting from both factions. We have deputed the forces, and the situation is under our control.”

Addressing the media, Superintendent of Police of Hazaribagh Arvind Singh said the situation was under control, but the police will take action “even if the slightest nuisance activities are noticed during the festival”.

“With Ramzan ongoing for Muslims, Ram Navami approaching for Hindus, and then the Sarhul festival is also on its way for the adivasis, we urge all the religious communities to maintain a peaceful environment with no tensions,” he said.

Speaking about the security preparations, Singh said that the preparations have been made for Ram Navami celebrations, and more security personnel have been deputed as compared to last year. “To keep a close watch on the procession crowds, we are using 15 drone cameras. All devotees and residents of Hazaribagh should remain assured about security. Security arrangements are being made at every corner, and officials will be present in each akhada wearing white uniforms,” Singh said.
