Three Newborns Burned After NICU Warmer Catches Fire at Chhindwara Hospital
Three newborn babies suffered burn injuries after a warmer caught fire inside the NICU of Chhindwara District Hospital in Madhya Pradesh. All three were shifted to Jabalpur Medical College for specialised treatment.
A fire inside a neonatal warmer at Chhindwara District Hospital in Madhya Pradesh left three newborn babies with burn injuries in the early hours of Saturday, prompting an emergency response inside the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
The incident took place at around 1.50 am when a spark from the filament of the warmer’s heating system ignited a fire. Three newborns who were inside the equipment at the time suffered burn injuries.
Hospital personnel immediately intervened, removed the infants from the warmer, and brought the flames under control.
At the time of the incident, 33 newborns were admitted to the NICU. While three babies were directly affected, the remaining 30 infants were evacuated safely from the unit.
The injured newborns were examined by senior specialists, including the Dean and Medical Superintendent of Chhindwara District Medical College. They were later referred to Jabalpur Medical College for advanced treatment.
The babies were taken to Jabalpur by ambulance under continuous medical supervision, with doctors accompanying them during the journey.
The decision to shift the infants to Jabalpur has also brought attention to the shortage of specialised paediatric surgical facilities at the Chhindwara hospital.
The transfer was necessitated by the unavailability of a paediatric surgeon at the local medical facility.
Following the incident, technicians were called to inspect the damaged warmer and examine other equipment in the neonatal unit.
A detailed scrutiny of the electrical system and the functioning of the machines is also expected as part of the hospital’s inquiry.
Civil Surgeon Kanchan Dubey said hospital staff responded promptly after noticing the fire and ensured that the other infants in the NICU were moved out safely.
Dubey said there was no immediate indication of negligence and described the incident as an apparent accident.
However, administrative officials are expected to conduct an independent investigation to determine the precise cause of the fire and assess the condition and safety of the equipment used in the neonatal unit.
The incident caused considerable anxiety among families of newborns admitted to the hospital, as staff rushed to move the babies to safety during the emergency.
The inquiry is expected to examine whether the fire resulted solely from a technical malfunction in the warmer or whether any other factors contributed to the incident.

मध्य प्रदेश के छिंदवाड़ा जिला अस्पताल में शनिवार तड़के नवजात गहन चिकित्सा इकाई में एक गंभीर हादसा हो गया।
एक वार्मर के हीटिंग सिस्टम में आग लगने से उसके भीतर रखे तीन नवजात बच्चे झुलस गए।
घटना के बाद अस्पताल कर्मचारियों ने तत्काल कार्रवाई करते हुए बच्चों को सुरक्षित बाहर निकाला और आग बुझा दी।
हादसा करीब 1.50 बजे हुआ। प्रारंभिक जानकारी के अनुसार, वार्मर के हीटिंग यूनिट के फिलामेंट में स्पार्किंग के बाद आग भड़क उठी।
उस समय NICU में कुल 33 नवजात भर्ती थे। प्रभावित वार्मर में मौजूद तीन बच्चों को चोटें आईं, जबकि बाकी 30 नवजातों को तत्काल सुरक्षित स्थान पर पहुंचा दिया गया।
घायल बच्चों की स्थिति को देखते हुए उन्हें छिंदवाड़ा में प्रारंभिक चिकित्सा सहायता देने के बाद विशेष उपचार के लिए जबलपुर मेडिकल कॉलेज रेफर किया गया।
अस्पताल प्रशासन के अनुसार, तीनों बच्चों को एम्बुलेंस से जबलपुर भेजा गया और यात्रा के दौरान डॉक्टर उनके साथ मौजूद रहे।
बच्चों को जबलपुर भेजे जाने से छिंदवाड़ा में विशेष बाल चिकित्सा सुविधाओं की उपलब्धता पर भी सवाल उठे हैं।
बताया गया कि अस्पताल में पीडियाट्रिक सर्जन उपलब्ध नहीं होने के कारण घायल नवजातों को उच्च चिकित्सा केंद्र भेजना पड़ा।
घटना के बाद अस्पताल प्रशासन ने संबंधित वार्मर और NICU में मौजूद अन्य मशीनों की तकनीकी जांच शुरू कर दी है। उपकरणों की स्थिति और विद्युत व्यवस्था की जांच के लिए तकनीशियनों को भी बुलाया गया है।
सिविल सर्जन कंचन दुबे ने कहा कि आग का पता चलते ही अस्पताल के कर्मचारियों ने तेजी से कार्रवाई की और बच्चों को वार्मर से बाहर निकालने के साथ ही आग पर नियंत्रण पा लिया।
उन्होंने शुरुआती स्तर पर लापरवाही की संभावना से इनकार करते हुए इसे एक दुर्घटना बताया।
हालांकि, घटना की विस्तृत जांच की जाएगी। प्रशासनिक अधिकारी भी मामले की पड़ताल करेंगे और यह जांच की जाएगी कि आग किस तकनीकी कारण से लगी तथा NICU में लगे अन्य विद्युत उपकरण पूरी तरह सुरक्षित हैं या नहीं।
इस हादसे के बाद अस्पताल में भर्ती नवजातों के परिजनों में चिंता का माहौल रहा। आग लगते ही कर्मचारियों को बच्चों को बाहर निकालने के लिए तेजी से दौड़भाग करनी पड़ी।
अब जांच से यह स्पष्ट होने की उम्मीद है कि घटना केवल उपकरण में आई तकनीकी खराबी का परिणाम थी या इसके पीछे कोई अन्य कारण भी मौजूद था।
