Washington, September 2: The confrontation between the United States and Iran has intensified sharply, with President Donald Trump warning Tehran of a far more severe American military response if Iran retaliates against the latest US strikes near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Trump issued the warning after American forces launched another round of attacks against Iranian military targets.
Tehran subsequently responded with missile and drone attacks directed at US-linked military positions in parts of the Middle East, marking one of the most serious exchanges between the two sides in weeks.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Iran would face a significantly more powerful American attack if it responded to the latest operation.
He also warned that an even larger strike remained possible, using unusually stark language to describe the potential consequences for the Islamic Republic.
The US president simultaneously claimed that Washington had achieved near-total control of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial international shipping corridor through which a substantial share of the world’s oil trade normally passes.
He also pointed to the deteriorating Iranian economy and argued that American sanctions and economic pressure were adding to Tehran’s difficulties.
Iranian Retaliation Spreads Across the Region
Iran did not appear to back down following the American strikes. Iranian forces launched retaliatory attacks against locations hosting or associated with US military assets in the region.
Jordanian authorities said their air defences intercepted 10 ballistic missiles fired from Iran, while additional projectiles reportedly fell in remote areas. No casualties were reported in Jordan in the initial accounts.
Iran also claimed that its forces had attacked American military installations in northern Iraq, including facilities in the Erbil area, using a combination of missiles and drones.
The claim could not immediately be independently verified, and neither the US nor Iraqi authorities confirmed the reported casualties.
The escalation was not confined to Jordan and Iraq. Iranian attacks or attempted attacks were also reported in Bahrain and Kuwait, both of which host American military assets.
Strait of Hormuz Emerges as the Central Flashpoint
At the heart of the latest confrontation is the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and one of the world’s most important energy corridors.
Washington says its latest military action was connected to Iranian efforts to threaten shipping and American forces in the region.
US Central Command said American strikes targeted Iranian military capabilities, including air-defence systems, radar installations, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities and communications infrastructure.
The security of the waterway has become increasingly uncertain following attacks involving commercial vessels.
Two oil tankers were struck by unknown projectiles near the strait earlier in the week, adding to fears that prolonged hostilities could disrupt international energy supplies.
The stakes extend far beyond the immediate US-Iran confrontation.
Any sustained disruption to the waterway could put additional pressure on global oil markets and raise transportation and energy costs worldwide.
New US Strikes Follow Earlier Exchange of Fire
The latest confrontation follows a fresh cycle of hostilities that began over the weekend.
US forces carried out strikes on Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz after Washington said Iran had attempted to interfere with maritime traffic and had targeted American personnel.
Iran subsequently fired missiles towards a US-linked facility in Jordan.
American forces then conducted another, broader wave of strikes against Iranian targets on Tuesday, prompting the latest round of Iranian retaliation.
The exchange represents a significant deterioration after a period in which direct hostilities had eased.
Civilian Casualties Add to Regional Concern
The latest American operation has also generated competing accounts over civilian casualties.
Iranian officials said US strikes hit areas in southern Iran and reported deaths, including people at a residence where a wedding gathering was taking place.
Iranian authorities described the incident as a civilian tragedy, while Washington has maintained that its military operation targeted Iranian military capabilities.
Independent verification of some of the competing claims remains limited.
The allegations have added another layer of tension to an already volatile confrontation, with Tehran accusing Washington of attacking civilians and the US insisting that its operations are directed at military targets.
Washington and Tehran Show Little Sign of Backing Down
The latest escalation comes against the backdrop of stalled diplomatic efforts. While Washington has continued to maintain pressure on Tehran, Iranian officials have indicated that further retaliation could follow if American attacks continue.
The renewed fighting is also being closely watched by countries across the Gulf, many of which host American forces and could potentially be drawn further into the confrontation.
For now, the Strait of Hormuz remains the most sensitive point in the crisis.
