Nagaland Film ‘Angh’ Wins TIFF 2026 Platform Prize, Opens Historic Oscar Route for India
Theja Rio’s Konyak-language debut becomes the first Indian film to gain the new festival-award route to the 2027 Academy Awards’ International Feature Film category.
A film rooted in Nagaland’s Konyak community has made a striking entry onto the global awards map.
Theja Rio’s debut feature, Angh, has won the Platform Prize at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, giving the Indian film a new route towards the 2027 Academy Awards.
The recognition is particularly significant because the Academy introduced a new pathway for non-English-language films this year.
A film that wins one of the specified top prizes at designated international festivals can seek consideration in the International Feature Film category without being selected as its country’s official entry. TIFF’s Platform Award is among the qualifying prizes.
That means Angh can pursue the Oscar route alongside India’s officially selected Gondhal.
However, the TIFF victory does not itself constitute an Oscar nomination; the film must still satisfy the Academy’s applicable eligibility and submission requirements.
From Nagaland to Toronto
Angh had its world premiere at TIFF on September 15 and was the sole Indian film competing in the festival’s 12-film Platform section, a juried programme focused on distinctive filmmaking voices.
The film emerged as the section’s winner, receiving a trophy and CAD 20,000 in prize money.
The jury highlighted the film’s perspective, filmmaking and portrayal of its world, while jury president Pablo Trapero praised Rio’s vision and boldness. TIFF chief executive Cameron Bailey also singled out the film as an unusually distinctive work.
For Rio, the award represents recognition not simply for an individual film but for a story emerging from an Indigenous community and presented largely in the Konyak language.
A father, a son and a community in transition
Set in Nagaland in the early 1960s, Angh centres on Anghba, an ageing village chief who remains behind with his wife and young son as their once-populated community steadily empties.
The arrival of an American missionary introduces a different faith and a new set of possibilities.
The resulting tension is not portrayed solely as a confrontation between two opposing worlds.
Instead, the film follows how cultural change enters ordinary family life and gradually reshapes the choices available to a younger generation.
At the heart of the story is the relationship between father and son.
Anghba tries to hold on to the traditions handed down to him, while his son begins to look towards the new world appearing around them.
The film consequently touches on questions of belonging, faith, family, memory and the uneasy passage from one cultural era to another.
Filmed on 16mm with Indigenous Naga performers
Rio chose to shoot the film on 16mm and use the Konyak language, bringing together Indigenous Naga performers and Scottish actor Douglas Henshall, the BAFTA-winning star known internationally for Shetland.
Henshall plays the American missionary.
The cast includes Anghlong Konyak as Anghba, alongside Sobino Rengma, Genpai Konyak, Amah Konyak and Wangton Konyak.
Rio co-wrote the screenplay with James Davis. Nancy Nisa Beso and Rio produced the film, while Adam Pietkiewicz handled cinematography, Tanya Chhabria edited the film, and Sagar Desai composed its music.
Pietkiewicz has also received recognition at TIFF, having been named the recipient of the festival’s Variety Artisan Award for his work on Angh.
Rio says the story came from home
Rio has described the film as deeply connected to the place, people and culture from which he comes.
He has said that although the central relationship is between a father and his son, the story reaches into broader questions of leaving, belonging and the changing meaning of home.
The director has also spoken about the continuing tension between tradition and modernity in Nagaland, arguing that many of the film’s themes arise naturally from the experiences of Naga communities over generations.
That local foundation has now taken the film far beyond Nagaland, placing a Konyak-language story at the centre of an international festival competition and giving it a pathway into the 2027 Oscar conversation.
What happens next in the Oscar race?
The 99th Academy Awards are scheduled for March 14, 2027. Under the Academy’s revised International Feature Film rules, films can reach consideration either through an approved national or regional selection committee or by winning a qualifying festival award such as TIFF’s Platform Prize.
The Academy’s published rules say films entering through the festival-award route must still meet the category’s eligibility requirements and complete the required submission process.
For Indian cinema, therefore, Angh represents something unusual: a film can now pursue the International Feature Film category through a major festival victory even though another movie has already been chosen as India’s official submission.
The next stages will determine whether Angh progresses further, but the TIFF Platform victory has already given Theja Rio’s debut a place in the international awards conversation.

नागालैंड से टोरंटो तक पहुंची कोन्याक कहानी
Angh का वर्ल्ड प्रीमियर 15 सितंबर को TIFF में हुआ था। इस वर्ष Platform Competition में शामिल 12 फिल्मों में यह भारत की एकमात्र फिल्म थी। यह खंड विशिष्ट निर्देशकीय दृष्टिकोण और अलग तरह की सिनेमाई आवाज वाली फिल्मों के लिए जाना जाता है।
फिल्म ने प्रतियोगिता का सर्वोच्च पुरस्कार अपने नाम किया। पुरस्कार के साथ ट्रॉफी और 20,000 कनाडाई डॉलर की राशि भी मिली। जूरी ने फिल्म के दृष्टिकोण, निर्देशन और उसके चित्रित संसार की प्रभावशाली प्रस्तुति की सराहना की।
जूरी अध्यक्ष पाब्लो ट्रैपेरो ने थेजा रियो की रचनात्मक दृष्टि और साहस की प्रशंसा की। TIFF के प्रमुख कैमरन बेली ने भी फिल्म को अपनी तरह का असाधारण काम बताया।
1960 के दशक के नागालैंड की कहानी
फिल्म की कहानी 1960 के दशक के नागालैंड में स्थापित है। इसका केंद्र एक बुजुर्ग कोन्याक गांव प्रमुख अंगबा और उसका परिवार है।
गांव के अधिकांश लोग वहां से जा चुके हैं और अंगबा अपनी बीमार पत्नी तथा छोटे बेटे के साथ अपने समुदाय की बची हुई परंपराओं को संभालने की कोशिश करता है।
कहानी में मोड़ तब आता है जब एक अमेरिकी मिशनरी गांव में पहुंचता है। उसके साथ एक अलग धार्मिक विचारधारा और जीवन जीने के नए विकल्प भी आते हैं।
फिल्म का संघर्ष केवल दो संस्कृतियों के सीधे टकराव तक सीमित नहीं है। कहानी यह दिखाने की कोशिश करती है कि बड़े सामाजिक बदलाव किस तरह रोजमर्रा के फैसलों, परिवारों और आने वाली पीढ़ियों के जीवन में धीरे-धीरे प्रवेश करते हैं।
अंगबा अपने बेटे को उस सांस्कृतिक विरासत से जोड़े रखना चाहता है जिसे उसने पिछली पीढ़ियों से पाया है, जबकि उसका बेटा बदलती दुनिया में उपलब्ध नए अवसरों की ओर आकर्षित होने लगता है।
कोन्याक भाषा और 16mm कैमरे में फिल्माई गई
Angh को 16mm फिल्म पर शूट किया गया है और इसमें बड़े पैमाने पर कोन्याक भाषा का इस्तेमाल किया गया है। फिल्म में स्थानीय नागा कलाकारों के साथ स्कॉटलैंड के BAFTA पुरस्कार विजेता अभिनेता डगलस हेनशॉल भी हैं, जिन्होंने अमेरिकी मिशनरी की भूमिका निभाई है।
अंगबा का किरदार एंगलोंग कोन्याक ने निभाया है। फिल्म के कलाकारों में सोबिनो रेंगमा, जेनपाई कोन्याक, अमाह कोन्याक और वांगटन कोन्याक भी शामिल हैं।
थेजा रियो ने जेम्स डेविस के साथ मिलकर पटकथा लिखी है। नैन्सी निसा बेसो और रियो इसके निर्माता हैं। एडम पिएटकीविज ने सिनेमैटोग्राफी, तान्या छाबड़िया ने संपादन और सागर देसाई ने संगीत संभाला है।
फिल्म के सिनेमैटोग्राफर पिएटकीविज को भी TIFF में Angh पर उनके काम के लिए Variety Artisan Award से सम्मानित किया गया है।
रियो के लिए घर और संस्कृति से जुड़ी कहानी
रियो ने फिल्म को उस जगह, समुदाय और संस्कृति के प्रति अपने जुड़ाव से जोड़ा है जहां से वह आते हैं। उनके अनुसार, पिता-पुत्र का रिश्ता कहानी का भावनात्मक केंद्र है, लेकिन फिल्म इससे आगे बढ़कर घर, पहचान, जीवन की अस्थिरता और किसी चीज को छोड़ देने की प्रक्रिया जैसे सवाल भी उठाती है।
निर्देशक ने नागालैंड में परंपरा और आधुनिकता के बीच चल रहे संतुलन को भी फिल्म के विषयों से जोड़ा है। उनके अनुसार, नागा समाज के अनुभवों में ही ऐसे अनेक विषय और भावनाएं मौजूद हैं जिन्हें फिल्म में जगह मिली है।
अब इसी स्थानीय कहानी को टोरंटो के अंतरराष्ट्रीय मंच पर पहचान मिली है और यह 2027 के ऑस्कर की दौड़ के लिए एक अलग रास्ते पर आगे बढ़ रही है।
ऑस्कर के लिए अब क्या होगा?
99वें Academy Awards का आयोजन 14 मार्च 2027 को होना है। एकेडमी के नए नियमों के तहत International Feature Film श्रेणी के लिए किसी फिल्म का रास्ता दो तरह से खुल सकता है—वह किसी मान्य राष्ट्रीय या क्षेत्रीय चयन समिति के जरिए आधिकारिक रूप से भेजी जाए या फिर निर्धारित अंतरराष्ट्रीय फिल्म समारोह में योग्य पुरस्कार जीते। TIFF का Platform Prize इसी सूची में शामिल है।
एकेडमी के नियमों के अनुसार, फिल्म को अन्य पात्रता शर्तें भी पूरी करनी होंगी और निर्धारित समयसीमा के भीतर आवश्यक सामग्री जमा करनी होगी।
भारत के लिए यह स्थिति खास है, क्योंकि Angh को TIFF की जीत के जरिए ऑस्कर की International Feature Film श्रेणी में विचार का रास्ता मिला है, जबकि भारत की आधिकारिक एंट्री के रूप में Gondhal का चयन किया गया है।
अब आगे की एकेडमी प्रक्रिया तय करेगी कि Angh कितनी दूर तक पहुंचती है। लेकिन TIFF Platform Prize जीतकर थेजा रियो की पहली फीचर फिल्म ने पहले ही भारतीय क्षेत्रीय सिनेमा और खास तौर पर नागालैंड की कोन्याक कहानी को अंतरराष्ट्रीय फिल्म जगत के केंद्र में ला दिया है।
