Trump-Xi Summit: Trade Truce Extended, AI Talks Continue as Big Strategic Gaps Remain

Xi’s Washington visit produces a temporary economic reprieve and warmer diplomatic optics, but major differences over technology, strategic competition and Iran remain.

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping wrapped up the first day of their high-profile Washington summit with a visible effort to put a more stable face on relations between the world’s two largest economies.

But beneath the ceremony and diplomatic warmth, several of the disputes that have strained ties in recent years remained unresolved.

The most tangible economic development came just before the leaders’ meeting, when US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington and Beijing had agreed to prolong their existing tariff truce by two months.

The arrangement, which had been due to expire in November, will now run into January, giving negotiators additional time to work on a broader economic understanding.

The extension provides businesses with some continuity in the short term, particularly on tariffs and China’s supply of critical minerals and rare-earth materials.

It does not, however, amount to a comprehensive settlement of the trade disputes between Washington and Beijing.

That distinction is important because the two governments remain engaged in a much broader economic contest involving tariffs, supply chains, strategic minerals, technology and market access.

Earlier agreements have reduced some immediate pressure, but the underlying competition has not disappeared.

A carefully staged show of diplomacy

The symbolism surrounding Xi’s visit was unmistakable.

Trump personally received the Chinese president at Joint Base Andrews, a gesture that received considerable attention because such airport welcomes are not routinely extended to visiting foreign leaders.

The formal reception at the White House included military honours and an aerial display before the two presidents moved into their private discussions.

The two leaders subsequently held several hours of bilateral talks before attending a state dinner with senior officials, business leaders and prominent figures from both countries.

Among the American technology executives attending were Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Their presence highlighted how deeply the US-China relationship has moved beyond conventional trade into the strategic contest over advanced technology and artificial intelligence.

Xi used the public portion of the meeting to call for competition between the two countries to remain within limits and for cooperation to expand wherever interests overlap.

He also said Washington and Beijing should avoid conflict and maintain mechanisms for dialogue between their militaries.

Trump, meanwhile, described the talks positively and has continued to emphasise economic relations and technology as central elements of the bilateral relationship.

AI becomes a new frontier.

Artificial intelligence emerged as one of the more consequential areas of discussion.

China said after the meeting that Washington and Beijing should maintain communication on AI. Xi also stressed publicly that both countries are major players in artificial intelligence and argued that its development should remain under human control.

Yet there was no indication on the first day of a sweeping agreement that would resolve the technology rivalry.

That leaves a fundamental tension intact. Washington wants to preserve its technological advantage in advanced AI and related computing technologies, while Beijing is determined to expand its own capabilities.

The two sides can therefore cooperate on selected areas while simultaneously competing over the technologies that could shape future economic and military power.

The softer side of the summit

Not every announcement was about tariffs or strategic rivalry.

Xi announced that China would send two giant pandas to Zoo Atlanta, reviving a form of symbolic diplomacy that has featured prominently in US-China relations for decades.

The Chinese leader also invited 100,000 young Americans to visit China over the next five years for exchanges and study.

Such gestures are relatively modest compared with the disputes over trade and technology, but they serve a diplomatic purpose by emphasising people-to-people ties at a time when the broader relationship remains intensely competitive.

What the summit did not settle

The meeting did not erase the major strategic disagreements between Washington and Beijing.

Questions surrounding Taiwan, advanced technology, critical minerals and China’s relationship with Iran remain part of the wider US-China strategic equation.

Analysts have noted that the summit produced fewer headline-grabbing breakthroughs than the elaborate diplomatic setting might have suggested.

The two-month trade extension is therefore best understood as a continuation of negotiations rather than the conclusion of the dispute.

For Trump, maintaining economic pressure while preventing another sharp escalation gives Washington additional room to negotiate.

For Beijing, continued access to the US market alongside greater certainty over tariffs and mineral exports provides its own immediate economic advantages.

Why New Delhi is watching closely

India has a direct interest in how the US-China relationship evolves.

One concern for New Delhi is the possibility that a prolonged thaw between Washington and Beijing could alter the strategic environment in the Indo-Pacific.

India has benefited in recent years from companies diversifying supply chains away from China under the broader “China+1” strategy.

A significant improvement in US-China economic relations could affect the pace and direction of that diversification.

Technology is another area to watch. Any substantial US-China understanding on chips, artificial intelligence, or other advanced technologies could change the competitive landscape in sectors where India is seeking to expand its own capabilities.

Critical minerals are equally important. China’s dominant role in the global processing and supply of rare-earth materials makes any US-China arrangement in this area relevant to countries attempting to build alternative supply chains.

New Delhi will also be attentive to the geopolitical dimension. A relationship in which Washington and Beijing manage their rivalry directly could affect the calculations of other Indo-Pacific powers, including India and Japan.

At the same time, there has been no formal creation of a US-China “G2” arrangement at the summit.
Trump has not publicly framed the relationship in those terms, and the discussions have remained centred on bilateral issues rather than an explicit division of global responsibilities between Washington and Beijing.

A pause in confrontation, not an end to competition

The first day of the summit produced a mixture of diplomacy, symbolism and limited economic progress.

The tariff truce has been extended, channels for AI dialogue remain open, and both leaders publicly stressed the importance of keeping competition from becoming confrontation.

But the central disagreements that define the US-China relationship have not disappeared.

The significance of the summit may therefore depend less on the ceremony surrounding Xi’s visit and more on what Washington and Beijing do with the additional negotiating time created by the trade extension.

For the rest of the world, including India, the key question is whether the latest diplomatic opening develops into a durable stabilisation of US-China relations—or remains another temporary pause in a much larger strategic rivalry.
