Trump’s Marine One Comes Close to Passenger Aircraft Near Washington Airport; FAA and NTSB Review Incident
US aviation authorities are investigating a close-proximity incident involving President Donald Trump’s Marine One helicopter and an Envoy Air passenger jet near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
A military helicopter transporting US President Donald Trump was involved in a close-proximity aviation incident with a commercial passenger aircraft near Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, prompting federal aviation authorities to examine the circumstances surrounding the event.
According to a report by The New York Times, the incident is believed to have stemmed from communication problems between the crew operating Marine One and air traffic controllers at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
People familiar with the matter indicated that unclear radio transmissions affected coordination between the helicopter and the control tower.
Officials familiar with the preliminary assessment said the communication lapse delayed routine air traffic sequencing, allowing the presidential helicopter and a departing passenger aircraft to come significantly closer than expected during their respective flight paths.
The incident occurred around midday as President Trump departed the White House aboard Marine One for Joint Base Andrews before continuing on a scheduled visit to Los Angeles.
Following the occurrence, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that it has initiated a review, while the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has begun an independent investigation.
The report stated that, before departing the White House, the helicopter crew made three separate radio calls informing controllers that takeoff would occur within approximately three minutes.
However, those transmissions reportedly were not received by the airport control tower.
Without confirmation from air traffic control, Marine One proceeded with its flight, bringing it close to the departure route of an Envoy Air passenger aircraft.
A video circulating on social media appears to show the commercial jet lifting off moments before the presidential helicopter passes through the area on a different flight path.
According to the report, the minimum separation between the two aircraft was approximately 1.2 kilometres horizontally and about 700 feet vertically before they safely continued on their respective routes.
Although no collision occurred and both aircraft completed their flights safely, the incident has renewed attention on communication procedures and operational coordination in one of the busiest airspaces in the United States.
The episode has also revived memories of the fatal aviation disaster near the same airport earlier this year.
In January 2025, an American Airlines passenger jet collided with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, resulting in the deaths of all 67 people on board.
The crash was the deadliest aviation accident in the United States since 2001.

द न्यूयॉर्क टाइम्स की रिपोर्ट के अनुसार प्रारंभिक जानकारी से संकेत मिलता है कि मरीन वन हेलीकॉप्टर के चालक दल और रोनाल्ड रीगन वॉशिंगटन नेशनल एयरपोर्ट के एयर ट्रैफिक कंट्रोल (ATC) के बीच रेडियो संचार में आई बाधा इस स्थिति का प्रमुख कारण हो सकती है।
मामले से जुड़े सूत्रों के अनुसार कुछ संदेश स्पष्ट रूप से प्राप्त नहीं हो सके, जिससे उड़ानों के समन्वय में विलंब हुआ।
रिपोर्ट में कहा गया है कि संचार में हुई इस गड़बड़ी के कारण एयर ट्रैफिक नियंत्रकों को उड़ानों के क्रम का समुचित प्रबंधन करने में देर हुई, जिसके परिणामस्वरूप राष्ट्रपति का हेलीकॉप्टर और एक वाणिज्यिक विमान निर्धारित सुरक्षा दूरी से कहीं अधिक निकट आ गए।
यह घटना मंगलवार दोपहर उस समय हुई जब राष्ट्रपति ट्रंप व्हाइट हाउस से मरीन वन के जरिए जॉइंट बेस एंड्रयूज़ जा रहे थे।
वहां से उन्हें निर्धारित कार्यक्रम के तहत लॉस एंजिलिस रवाना होना था। घटना के बाद फेडरल एविएशन एडमिनिस्ट्रेशन (FAA) ने समीक्षा शुरू करने की पुष्टि की, जबकि नेशनल ट्रांसपोर्टेशन सेफ्टी बोर्ड (NTSB) ने स्वतंत्र जांच प्रारंभ कर दी।
रिपोर्ट के मुताबिक उड़ान भरने से पहले मरीन वन के चालक दल ने एयर ट्रैफिक कंट्रोल को तीन बार यह सूचना देने का प्रयास किया कि हेलीकॉप्टर लगभग तीन मिनट में रवाना होगा।
हालांकि बताया गया कि ये संदेश नियंत्रण कक्ष तक प्रभावी रूप से नहीं पहुंच सके।
आवश्यक समन्वय के अभाव में हेलीकॉप्टर ने उड़ान जारी रखी और वह उसी समय उड़ान भर रहे एनवॉय एयर के एक यात्री विमान के मार्ग के निकट पहुंच गया।
सोशल मीडिया पर सामने आए एक वीडियो में यात्री विमान को उड़ान भरते हुए और कुछ क्षण बाद राष्ट्रपति का हेलीकॉप्टर दूसरी दिशा में उड़ता दिखाई देता है।
रिपोर्ट के अनुसार दोनों विमानों के बीच न्यूनतम क्षैतिज दूरी लगभग 1.2 किलोमीटर और ऊर्ध्वाधर दूरी लगभग 700 फीट दर्ज की गई।
इसके बाद दोनों विमान सुरक्षित रूप से अपने-अपने निर्धारित मार्ग पर आगे बढ़ गए।
हालांकि इस घटना में कोई दुर्घटना नहीं हुई और दोनों उड़ानें सुरक्षित रहीं, लेकिन इसने अमेरिका के व्यस्त हवाई क्षेत्र में संचार व्यवस्था और उड़ान समन्वय की प्रक्रियाओं पर नए सिरे से सवाल खड़े कर दिए हैं।
यह घटनाक्रम इसी क्षेत्र में हुई पिछले वर्ष की भीषण विमान दुर्घटना की याद भी ताजा कर गया। जनवरी 2025 में रोनाल्ड रीगन वॉशिंगटन नेशनल एयरपोर्ट के निकट एक अमेरिकन एयरलाइंस यात्री विमान और अमेरिकी सेना के ब्लैक हॉक हेलीकॉप्टर की टक्कर में सभी 67 लोगों की मृत्यु हो गई थी।
इसे वर्ष 2001 के बाद अमेरिका की सबसे घातक विमान दुर्घटनाओं में गिना जाता है।
