Ujjain Khade Hanuman Temple Relocation: IIT Indore Asked to Assess Safe Shifting of Idol
Municipal corporation seeks expert advice after devotees object to heavy machinery being used to move the historic basalt idol during road widening.
UJJAIN: The proposed relocation of the Khade Hanuman temple idol in Ujjain has been put under expert review, with the Ujjain Municipal Corporation (UMC) seeking technical advice from an IIT Indore team before deciding how and when the revered idol can be shifted.
The move follows concerns over possible damage to the idol during the ongoing road expansion project between Kanthal Square and Gopal Mandir.
The project is expected to widen the road by around 15 metres, bringing the temple within the area covered by the work.
UMC Commissioner Abhilash Mishra said the IIT team was called in after a request from the temple priest.
He said the administration would take a decision on relocation only after receiving the experts’ assessment.
“The process and date for relocating the idol will be finalised only after their report,” Mishra said, adding that officials were examining whether the idol could be moved without causing any damage.
The technical inspection was carried out on Tuesday.
According to officials, the IIT Indore team deployed specialised equipment to determine how deeply the idol is embedded and to examine the soil around it.
The construction technique used for large idols from the Parmara period is also being considered as part of the assessment.
Officials said such sculptures were often positioned using interlocking methods, a factor that could affect the process of removing the Khade Hanuman idol.
The idol itself is carved from basalt stone found in the Malwa region and is considered to be made from a durable material, officials said.
Its construction and the manner in which it was installed are among the factors being examined before any physical relocation is attempted.
Earlier efforts to shift the idol involved cutters and heavy machinery.
Those attempts met resistance from devotees, who feared that applying excessive force could cause damage to the revered sculpture.
The temple priest, Mahesh Bairagi, subsequently called for a technical evaluation rather than forceful removal.
He said he did not oppose the administration’s road-related work but wanted modern technology and expert assessment to determine the safest way to relocate the idol.
Residents also approached the municipal administration with a memorandum, urging officials to arrange an expert examination before proceeding with the shifting process.
Responding to the request, the IIT Indore team inspected the idol on Tuesday, officials said.
The examination is now expected to provide the technical basis for deciding the next steps.
For the civic administration, the issue carries both engineering and religious sensitivities.
A UMC official said shifting the idol was proving difficult because of its significance as an object of faith.
Until a final decision is taken, authorities have installed a canopy over the idol as a temporary protective measure.
The UMC has indicated that the relocation procedure and its timing will be determined after the IIT team submits its report.

उज्जैन: उज्जैन में खड़े हनुमान मंदिर की मूर्ति को स्थानांतरित करने का फैसला अब तकनीकी विशेषज्ञों की रिपोर्ट के बाद ही लिया जाएगा। उज्जैन नगर निगम (UMC) ने मूर्ति को सुरक्षित तरीके से हटाने की संभावना का आकलन करने के लिए IIT इंदौर की टीम से सलाह मांगी है।
यह कदम शहर में कांठल चौराहे से गोपाल मंदिर तक चल रहे सड़क चौड़ीकरण कार्य के बीच उठाया गया है। परियोजना के तहत सड़क को करीब 15 मीटर तक चौड़ा किया जाना है और इसी दायरे में खड़े हनुमान मंदिर भी आ रहा है।
नगर निगम आयुक्त अभिलाष मिश्रा ने बताया कि IIT इंदौर की टीम को मंदिर के पुजारी के अनुरोध पर बुलाया गया था।
उन्होंने कहा कि मूर्ति को कब और किस प्रक्रिया के तहत स्थानांतरित किया जाएगा, इसका फैसला विशेषज्ञों की रिपोर्ट मिलने के बाद ही किया जाएगा।
मिश्रा के अनुसार, प्रशासन इस बात का तकनीकी मूल्यांकन कर रहा है कि मूर्ति को बिना किसी नुकसान के सुरक्षित रूप से हटाया जा सकता है या नहीं। उन्होंने स्पष्ट किया कि स्थानांतरण की प्रक्रिया और तारीख रिपोर्ट आने के बाद तय होगी।
IIT इंदौर की टीम ने मंगलवार को मौके पर पहुंचकर विशेष उपकरणों की मदद से मूर्ति की गहराई और उसके आसपास की मिट्टी का अध्ययन किया।
इस जांच का उद्देश्य यह समझना है कि मूर्ति जमीन में किस तरह स्थापित है और उसे हटाने के लिए कौन-सा तरीका सुरक्षित हो सकता है।
अधिकारियों ने बताया कि परमार वंश के काल की बड़ी मूर्तियों को कई बार इंटरलॉकिंग तकनीक के जरिए स्थापित किया जाता था।
इसलिए खड़े हनुमान की मूर्ति को हटाने की प्रक्रिया तय करते समय उसके स्थापना ढांचे को भी ध्यान में रखा जा रहा है।
अधिकारियों के मुताबिक, खड़े हनुमान की मूर्ति मालवा क्षेत्र में पाए जाने वाले टिकाऊ बेसाल्ट पत्थर से बनी है। मूर्ति की सामग्री और जमीन में उसकी स्थापना का तरीका दोनों ही विशेषज्ञों के परीक्षण का हिस्सा हैं।
इससे पहले मूर्ति को हटाने के लिए कटर और भारी मशीनरी का इस्तेमाल करने की कोशिश की गई थी। हालांकि, श्रद्धालुओं ने इसका विरोध किया और आशंका जताई कि अधिक बल लगाने से मूर्ति को नुकसान पहुंच सकता है।
मंदिर के पुजारी महेश बैरागी ने इसके बाद आधुनिक तकनीक से मूर्ति की जांच कराने की मांग की।
उन्होंने कहा कि उन्हें प्रशासन की कार्रवाई से आपत्ति नहीं है, लेकिन मूर्ति को स्थानांतरित करने से पहले विशेषज्ञों से उसकी स्थिति का उचित आकलन कराया जाना चाहिए।
स्थानीय लोगों ने भी नगर निगम आयुक्त को ज्ञापन सौंपकर विशेषज्ञों से जांच कराने की मांग की थी। उनका आग्रह था कि तकनीकी मूल्यांकन के बाद ही मूर्ति को हटाने की प्रक्रिया आगे बढ़ाई जाए।
पुजारी के अनुरोध पर नगर निगम ने IIT इंदौर की टीम को बुलाया और मंगलवार को टीम ने मूर्ति का निरीक्षण किया। अब विशेषज्ञों की रिपोर्ट के आधार पर आगे की कार्रवाई तय की जाएगी।
नगर निगम के सामने चुनौती केवल तकनीकी नहीं है। एक अधिकारी ने कहा कि मूर्ति आस्था से जुड़ी होने के कारण उसे स्थानांतरित करना सामान्य निर्माण कार्यों की तुलना में अधिक संवेदनशील विषय है।
अंतरिम व्यवस्था के तौर पर मूर्ति की सुरक्षा के लिए एक छतरी भी लगाई गई है। नगर निगम अब विशेषज्ञों की रिपोर्ट का इंतजार कर रहा है, जिसके बाद मूर्ति को सुरक्षित रूप से स्थानांतरित करने की प्रक्रिया और तारीख तय की जाएगी।
