UP Tourism Turns to Gen Z Reels to Put Uttar Pradesh’s Local Stories on the Map

New campaign invites young residents to showcase food, heritage, traditions and hidden attractions through 60-second videos.
Uttar Pradesh Tourism has launched a reel-based campaign inviting young residents to promote their cities, local culture, food, heritage and lesser-known destinations.

LUCKNOW: Forget the conventional tourism brochure.

Uttar Pradesh is taking its pitch to a generation that discovers places through phone screens, short videos and personal recommendations.

The state Tourism Department has launched a campaign inviting young residents to become on-camera storytellers for their own cities and towns.

Through the ‘Visit My State Uttar Pradesh’ initiative, participants are being encouraged to create short reels that capture the character of the places they know best.

The idea is to move destination promotion away from a purely official narrative and allow residents to decide what deserves attention.

A city’s identity could be conveyed through its food, architecture, festivals, handicrafts, neighbourhoods, local personalities, traditions or places that rarely appear in conventional tourist itineraries.

Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said the initiative is intended to give young people a direct role in presenting Uttar Pradesh to potential visitors.

He described them as prospective cultural ambassadors who can introduce their hometowns through their own experiences and perspectives.

The campaign is particularly geared towards the habits of younger digital audiences, for whom a recommendation from an individual creator can often be more compelling than a formal tourism advertisement.

The department hopes that a collection of such videos will offer travellers a more intimate picture of the state.

There are, however, specific rules for entries. Each reel must be restricted to 60 seconds, and the participant has to appear in the video with their face and voice clearly identifiable.

The narration must be delivered personally rather than through an anonymous or purely visual presentation.

Participants are also required to film their entries outdoors, with a recognisable tourist attraction or landmark forming part of the background.

Videos may be made in either Hindi or English and must finish with the campaign line: “Visit My State Uttar Pradesh.”

The campaign is designed to capture the enormous variety found across the state rather than focus exclusively on its best-known tourist centres.

Residents from different regions are being encouraged to highlight what distinguishes their own part of Uttar Pradesh.

For example, a participant from Lucknow could build a reel around the city’s culinary traditions, chikankari craftsmanship, historic neighbourhoods or cultural venues.

Young people from Braj, Bundelkhand, Purvanchal and the Terai can similarly bring regional customs, landscapes and everyday experiences to the screen.

Amrit Abhijat, chairman of the UP State Tourism Development Corporation and Additional Chief Secretary for Tourism, Culture and Religious Affairs, said the initiative gives residents a central role in telling the story of destinations.

The campaign’s underlying premise is that even a minute-long video can combine a recognisable place with an individual experience and thereby offer viewers a different reason to visit.

A familiar monument can acquire a new appeal when presented through the eyes of someone who lives nearby, while lesser-known destinations can gain exposure beyond their immediate region.

Taken together, the department expects these personal accounts to portray Uttar Pradesh as a diverse tourism circuit encompassing pilgrimage, history, nature, cuisine and traditional crafts.

Young residents can submit their reels through the campaign’s online form.

The Tourism Department is also directing participants towards existing ‘Visit My State Uttar Pradesh’ content on its social media channels for reference before creating their entries.

Reels

‘Visit My State Uttar Pradesh’

‘Visit My State Uttar Pradesh’ अभियान में लोगों से अधिकतम 60 सेकंड की Reel तैयार करने को कहा गया है, जिसमें वे अपने क्षेत्र की खासियत को अपनी नजर और अपनी भाषा में सामने रख सकें।
