US F-15E Crew’s Harrowing Escape From Iran Revealed Months After Crash

Colonel recounts broken bones, a race against Iranian forces, and a covert US operation that led to his rescue nearly 48 hours after the fighter jet went down.

For nearly two days after his fighter jet crashed in Iran, US Air Force Colonel “Bravo” remained stranded among cliffs and barren high-desert valleys, injured, short of food and water, and aware that Iranian forces were searching for him.

Five months after the incident, he has publicly described the extraordinary chain of events that eventually brought him home.

Bravo was the backseater aboard an F-15E Strike Eagle operating near Isfahan on the night of April 2.

The aircraft had been assigned to strike industrial facilities connected with Iran’s drone and missile programme when it was hit by a shoulder-fired missile, according to the account featured on CBS News’ 60 Minutes.

The aircraft, valued at about $30 million, was brought down by a missile estimated to cost roughly $100,000.

Bravo recalled the impact as being comparable to being struck by a freight train. He and the pilot initially attempted to save the aircraft, but eventually had no choice but to eject.

The two airmen were separated during their descent. One of them, identified as Alpha, came down roughly five miles from Bravo and was recovered about six hours after the crash in a hazardous daytime helicopter operation.

Bravo’s landing was far more punishing. His fall left him with a broken back, arm and shoulder.

His parachute had also been damaged, and at one point he looked upward and realised that there was no longer a functioning canopy above him.

He later described that moment as among the most frightening experiences of his life. Faced with the prospect of an uncontrolled fall, he stopped to pray and asked for help if he was going to survive.

The ground offered little relief. Bravo found himself in a remote landscape of high desert surrounded by cliffs. With multiple bones broken, he concluded that reaching safety would require him to climb one of the rocky faces.

Alpha, despite his own injuries, managed to move away from the location where he landed. He later said that military training had taught him to adapt to difficult circumstances and that he moved as quickly as his injuries allowed.

Washington Scrambles to Find the Missing Airman

The incident immediately triggered a high-level response in Washington. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was reportedly awakened during the night to receive an update.

His principal concerns were whether the aircrew had survived and whether Iranian forces had discovered their positions.

According to the account, Hegseth made clear that the United States would attempt to recover the airmen regardless of whether their condition was known.

The situation became more urgent as Iranian media began broadcasting images of the wreckage.

A bounty of $60,000 was reportedly announced for information leading to the discovery of the downed airmen, while videos circulated showing armed Iranian groups searching the area.

US military sources told American media that Iranian personnel had come within several hundred metres of Bravo’s position.

Meanwhile, American forces mounted a rescue effort involving about 90 highly trained personnel, with the CIA providing intelligence support.

Admiral Brad Cooper, the US Central Command commander overseeing American forces in the Middle East, said the deployment marked the first time in more than four decades that US troops had operated on the ground inside Iran.

The mission quickly became a race against time as American forces attempted to monitor the movements of Iranian personnel while locating the missing airman.

One Pilot Rescued, Another Still Missing

American helicopters managed to reach Alpha within six hours of the crash. The daytime extraction was considered particularly dangerous because Iranian forces fired on the rescuers.

But Bravo could not be found, forcing the rescue team to pull back without him.

The search effort gained new momentum when Bravo succeeded in communicating with US forces. He informed them that he was injured but still capable of moving.

For Bravo, surviving the ordeal had become as much a physical struggle as a fight against time. He later described sending the words “God is good” after reflecting on everything he had endured.

Yet another full day would pass before he was finally located and extracted. During that period, he remained in the cold mountainous desert with almost no food or water.

CIA Deception and a Covert Rescue

The rescue operation subsequently took another turn, with the CIA playing a covert role.

According to the report, the agency conducted a deception effort designed to mislead Iranian forces searching for Bravo while using highly classified technology to establish his location.

American bombers and drones also struck Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces near the area where Bravo was hiding, helping clear the way for the extraction.

The eventual rescue involved two large search-and-rescue aircraft, which landed on a makeshift airstrip. From there, small “Little Bird” helicopters were dispatched toward Bravo’s position several miles away.

When the rescuers finally reached him, Bravo described the moment as one of the greatest of his life. His immediate response was reportedly brief but decisive: “Let’s go.”

Even then, the mission was not complete.

The rescue aircraft encountered a fresh obstacle when its landing gear became trapped in the loose desert sand, preventing it from taking off as planned.

The US military was consequently forced to deploy another Air Force unit to evacuate the roughly 90 elite personnel as well as the rescued airman.

Before leaving Iranian territory, American forces destroyed the two disabled aircraft and the Little Bird helicopters used during the operation, preventing the equipment from being captured by Iran.

A Crash With Wider Military Significance

The April incident was notable beyond the dramatic circumstances of the rescue.

According to the supplied account, it represented the first time a manned US aircraft had been shot down over Iran during the US-Iran conflict.

The F-15E Strike Eagle is designed for both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. The aircraft had been operating near mountainous terrain south of Isfahan, an area associated with Iran’s highly enriched nuclear material.

Admiral Cooper said the mission assigned to the two airmen involved striking industrial infrastructure linked to Iran’s drone and missile capabilities.

For Bravo, however, the mission became a fight for survival after the aircraft was destroyed.

His account of the crash, injuries, isolation, and eventual extraction offers a rare glimpse into the human side of an operation that unfolded amid intense military and intelligence activity.

The rescue also came against the backdrop of the last US fighter aircraft reportedly lost in combat before this incident: an A-10 Thunderbolt II during the 2003 US invasion of Iraq.
