US House Honours Indian Pilot Smit Machchhar After Flydubai Cockpit Attack

WASHINGTON: An Indian pilot who fought to retain control of a passenger aircraft after being attacked inside the cockpit has received bipartisan recognition in the US House of Representatives.

A resolution introduced by Democratic Congressman Josh Gottheimer and Republican lawmakers Michael McCaul and Don Bacon honours Captain Smit Machchhar for his “extraordinary courage” during the September 30 emergency aboard Flydubai Flight 1073.

The measure also commends the crew and passengers who helped bring the crisis under control and condemns the attempted attack as an act of terrorism.

The resolution, designated H.Res. 1612, recounts how Machchhar continued to act despite sustaining serious injuries when the aircraft’s first officer allegedly attacked him and tried to take control of the flight deck.

Pilot an Indian citizen fought back as aircraft plunged thousands of feet

Flight 1073 had departed Dubai International Airport for Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv on September 30, carrying approximately 174 passengers, along with crew members.

The majority of those aboard were Israeli citizens. The flight also included four US citizens and 27 children, according to the resolution.

The situation changed dramatically during the journey when the first officer allegedly attacked Machchhar in the cockpit with the aircraft’s emergency crash axe and attempted to seize the controls.

The aircraft subsequently lost more than 14,000 feet of altitude in less than half a minute, turning the incident into an extremely dangerous in-flight emergency.

Machchhar, despite his injuries, managed to resist the attack and reach the cockpit door. His actions allowed the door to be opened, creating an opportunity for other people on board to intervene.

Two off-duty pilots travelling as passengers were able to enter the cockpit. Cabin crew and passengers also moved in to restrain the first officer, helping prevent the attacker from retaining control of the aircraft.

The plane was eventually diverted and brought down safely at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia. Everyone aboard was accounted for.

US lawmakers hail pilot’s actions

The bipartisan nature of the resolution has added significance to the recognition.

Gottheimer, McCaul and Bacon jointly backed the measure, praising not only Machchhar but also the passengers, cabin crew and other pilots who responded during the emergency.

Gottheimer described Machchhar as a hero and said the captain’s actions protected everyone aboard the aircraft.

McCaul similarly highlighted the importance of the injured pilot’s decision to unlock the cockpit door, which enabled others to enter and assist in securing the flight deck.

The resolution specifically recognises the collective effort that followed the cockpit assault.

While Machchhar’s actions were central to the response, the lawmakers also credited the off-duty pilots, cabin crew and passengers for helping restrain the first officer and bring the aircraft safely to the ground.

Incident now being investigated as a terrorist act.

The US resolution describes the attempted takeover as a terrorist attack.

That characterization followed an announcement by the United Arab Emirates Attorney General on October 3 that the investigation had determined the first officer had attempted to carry out a terrorist act.

Authorities in Saudi Arabia and the UAE have been called upon to conduct a full and speedy investigation into the incident.

The US resolution also asks that the United States and Israel remain fully informed about the progress and findings of the investigation.

The motive behind the attack remains a subject of investigation.

Reports have identified the first officer as Omani national Hammam al-Hammami, although details concerning the circumstances and motive have continued to be investigated.

Machchhar was seriously injured during the struggle in the cockpit and is recovering in the UAE.

The severity of his injuries has underscored the circumstances in which he continued to act.

Reports have said he suffered a serious head injury during the confrontation, yet remained capable of taking steps that enabled others to regain access to the flight deck.

His actions have drawn attention well beyond the United States.

Indian and Israeli leaders have publicly praised the captain for his conduct during the crisis, while aviation representatives in India have also called for national recognition of his bravery.

A crisis that could have ended very differently

The significance of the incident lies not simply in the fact that an attack occurred aboard a commercial aircraft, but in what happened during the critical moments that followed.

With the aircraft rapidly losing altitude and the captain injured, control of the cockpit was placed under extraordinary pressure.

Machchhar’s ability to resist the attack and open the cockpit door allowed other trained pilots and those inside the cabin to intervene.

The subsequent safe landing at Tabuk meant that an incident that could have resulted in mass casualties ended without the loss of life among the passengers and crew.

The House resolution now places the captain’s actions on the congressional record while also recognising the role played by those who helped secure the aircraft.

The measure was introduced on October 5 and referred to the House Foreign Affairs Committee for consideration.
