Wrong Man Detained in Hamirpur: Identity Mix-Up Triggers Assault Allegations Against Uttar Pradesh Police
A case of mistaken identity has landed the Uttar Pradesh Police in controversy after a 29-year-old man from Hamirpur was allegedly detained under the wrong non-bailable warrant.
Shivraj Singh reportedly spent hours in police custody after officers confused him with another individual carrying the same first name.
His family has accused the police of physically assaulting him before realising they had apprehended the wrong person.
Relatives of Shivraj claimed that he suffered severe injuries while in custody. Videos shared on social media purportedly show the family alleging that he was beaten inside the police station and released only after officers verified that the warrant had been issued against another man with a similar name.
Rejecting allegations of custodial violence, Hamirpur Police maintained that an internal inquiry has already been initiated.
According to officials, the confusion arose because both men named Shivraj reside in the same locality, resulting in an inadvertent error while executing the court’s warrant.
Police also disputed the family’s claims regarding the injuries. Officials stated that after learning about the mistaken detention,
Shivraj allegedly became upset, struck his hand against a glass window, and hit his head against a wall, causing the injuries himself rather than being assaulted by police personnel.
Additional Superintendent of Police Arvind Kumar Verma said the entire incident is under investigation. He informed that CCTV footage installed inside the police station will be examined thoroughly and strict action will be taken if any officer is found guilty. He also confirmed that Shivraj’s health condition is currently stable.
Shivraj Singh lives in Merapur locality, which falls under the jurisdiction of Hamirpur’s Sadar Kotwali police station. The incident quickly drew public attention after news of the alleged wrongful detention spread across the area.
The episode sparked resentment among residents, who gathered outside the police station and staged a protest demanding accountability against the officials allegedly involved in the incident.
The demonstration concluded only after senior police officers assured protesters that a fair and transparent investigation would be carried out. They promised appropriate disciplinary action if evidence established any misconduct by police personnel.
Circle Officer Yashpal Singh explained that two individuals named Shivraj reside in the same neighbourhood.
He said the court warrant did not mention the father’s name of the accused, making it difficult for officers to distinguish between the two.
He further noted that the detained Shivraj had previously been named in five criminal cases, which contributed to the confusion.
According to police, officers verified the detained man’s identity after bringing him to the police station. It was only then that they realised he was not the individual against whom the warrant had actually been issued.
Officials maintained that Shivraj became agitated after learning about the mistake and allegedly damaged a glass pane, injuring his hand, before also hitting his head.
He was subsequently shifted to a hospital for medical treatment, police said.
Meanwhile, a video circulating widely on social media reportedly shows Shivraj speaking from his hospital bed.
In the clip, he alleges that police forcibly took him from his home using a warrant issued for another person and later assaulted him inside the police station.
Authorities said his medical examination report is still awaited. Meanwhile, efforts to obtain an independent response from his family following the incident were unsuccessful.
Another video shared online features Shivraj’s mother accusing three policemen of arriving at their residence and taking her son away against his will after claiming that a court warrant had been issued in his name.
She further alleged that he was beaten in custody and later informed that police were actually searching for a suspect linked to a 2018 case under instructions from a senior officer.

उत्तर प्रदेश के हमीरपुर में पहचान की कथित गड़बड़ी ने पुलिस को विवादों में ला दिया है। 29 वर्षीय शिवराज सिंह को गैर-जमानती वारंट के आधार पर हिरासत में ले लिया गया, जबकि बाद में पता चला कि वारंट किसी दूसरे व्यक्ति के नाम पर था। परिजनों का आरोप है कि पुलिस ने गलती का एहसास होने से पहले शिवराज के साथ थाने में मारपीट की, जिससे उन्हें गंभीर चोटें आईं।
परिवार के सदस्यों का कहना है कि शिवराज को गलत तरीके से पकड़कर थाने ले जाया गया, जहां उनके साथ कथित रूप से बर्बर व्यवहार किया गया। सोशल मीडिया पर वायरल वीडियो में परिजन दावा कर रहे हैं कि पुलिस ने उनकी पिटाई की और बाद में पहचान स्पष्ट होने पर उन्हें छोड़ दिया।
इन आरोपों को खारिज करते हुए हमीरपुर पुलिस ने कहा कि पूरे मामले की विभागीय जांच शुरू कर दी गई है। पुलिस के अनुसार, जिस आरोपी की तलाश थी और शिवराज दोनों एक ही इलाके के निवासी हैं तथा दोनों का पहला नाम समान होने के कारण यह भ्रम उत्पन्न हुआ।
पुलिस का यह भी कहना है कि शिवराज को जो चोटें आईं, वे पुलिस की मारपीट से नहीं बल्कि उनकी अपनी हरकतों से लगीं। अधिकारियों के मुताबिक, जब उन्हें पता चला कि उन्हें गलती से हिरासत में लिया गया है तो उन्होंने गुस्से में कांच पर हाथ मारा और दीवार से सिर टकरा लिया, जिससे वे घायल हो गए।
अपर पुलिस अधीक्षक अरविंद कुमार वर्मा ने बताया कि घटना की विस्तृत जांच कराई जा रही है। उन्होंने कहा कि थाने में लगे सीसीटीवी कैमरों की फुटेज की जांच होगी और यदि किसी पुलिसकर्मी की लापरवाही या दोष सामने आता है तो उसके खिलाफ सख्त कार्रवाई की जाएगी। उन्होंने यह भी बताया कि शिवराज की हालत फिलहाल स्थिर है।
शिवराज सिंह हमीरपुर के मेरापुर मोहल्ले के रहने वाले हैं, जो सदर कोतवाली थाना क्षेत्र के अंतर्गत आता है। घटना की जानकारी फैलते ही स्थानीय स्तर पर लोगों में नाराजगी बढ़ गई।
घटना से आक्रोशित स्थानीय लोगों ने पुलिस के खिलाफ विरोध प्रदर्शन किया और कथित रूप से दोषी पुलिसकर्मियों पर कार्रवाई की मांग की। प्रदर्शन के दौरान लोगों ने निष्पक्ष जांच और जिम्मेदार अधिकारियों के खिलाफ कठोर कदम उठाने की मांग दोहराई।
बाद में वरिष्ठ पुलिस अधिकारियों ने प्रदर्शनकारियों को निष्पक्ष जांच का भरोसा दिया। अधिकारियों ने आश्वासन दिया कि यदि जांच में किसी प्रकार की गड़बड़ी या मारपीट की पुष्टि होती है तो संबंधित पुलिसकर्मियों के खिलाफ कड़ी कार्रवाई की जाएगी, जिसके बाद प्रदर्शन समाप्त हुआ।
सर्किल अधिकारी यशपाल सिंह ने बताया कि इलाके में शिवराज नाम के दो व्यक्ति रहते हैं। उन्होंने कहा कि अदालत से जारी वारंट में आरोपी के पिता का नाम दर्ज नहीं था, जिसके कारण पुलिस गलत व्यक्ति के घर पहुंच गई। उन्होंने यह भी बताया कि हिरासत में लिए गए शिवराज के खिलाफ पहले पांच आपराधिक मामले दर्ज रह चुके थे, जिससे भ्रम और बढ़ गया।
पुलिस के अनुसार, थाने पहुंचने के बाद दस्तावेजों और पहचान का मिलान किया गया, तब स्पष्ट हुआ कि हिरासत में लिया गया व्यक्ति वह नहीं है जिसके खिलाफ अदालत ने वारंट जारी किया था।
अधिकारियों का कहना है कि सच्चाई सामने आने के बाद शिवराज काफी नाराज हो गए और कथित रूप से कांच तोड़कर अपना हाथ घायल कर लिया तथा दीवार से सिर भी टकरा लिया। इसके बाद उन्हें उपचार के लिए अस्पताल भेजा गया।
सोशल मीडिया पर वायरल एक अन्य वीडियो में अस्पताल के बिस्तर पर लेटे शिवराज दावा करते दिखाई दे रहे हैं कि पुलिस उन्हें ऐसे वारंट के आधार पर घर से उठाकर ले गई जो उनके नाम पर जारी ही नहीं हुआ था। उनका आरोप है कि थाने के भीतर उनके साथ मारपीट भी की गई।
पुलिस का कहना है कि मामले में चिकित्सकीय परीक्षण की रिपोर्ट अभी प्राप्त नहीं हुई है। वहीं, घटना के बाद परिवार का विस्तृत पक्ष जानने की कोशिश की गई, लेकिन उनसे संपर्क नहीं हो सका।
एक अन्य वायरल वीडियो में शिवराज की मां आरोप लगाती हैं कि तीन पुलिसकर्मी उनके घर पहुंचे और अदालत के वारंट का हवाला देकर उनके बेटे को जबरन अपने साथ ले गए।
उनका कहना है कि थाने में उसके साथ मारपीट की गई और बाद में पुलिस ने बताया कि वारंट वर्ष 2018 के एक मामले से जुड़े दूसरे व्यक्ति के लिए था तथा उन्हें वरिष्ठ अधिकारी के निर्देश पर लाया गया था।
