Yogi Adityanath Announces Major Jobs Boost for Athletes as Gorakhpur Gets International Cricket Stadium
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday unveiled a series of major announcements for sportspersons while laying the foundation stone of a new international cricket stadium in Gorakhpur.
Addressing a large gathering during the groundbreaking ceremony, the Chief Minister said the state government is committed to strengthening sports infrastructure and creating better career opportunities for athletes across Uttar Pradesh.
Speaking at the event, Yogi Adityanath revealed that nearly 550 medal-winning athletes in the state have already been given government jobs through direct recruitment.
He further announced that another recruitment drive for 500 sportspersons has been initiated.
According to the Chief Minister, athletes who have won medals at prestigious international competitions such as the Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and World Championships will soon receive appointment letters under the state’s direct recruitment policy.
The Chief Minister also announced plans to develop a world-class sports complex adjacent to the upcoming international cricket stadium.
The foundation stone ceremony for the stadium, being built at Tal Nador along the Varanasi four-lane route at an estimated cost of nearly ₹393 crore, was attended by Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
During his speech, Yogi Adityanath said that Uttar Pradesh has undergone a major transformation under his government.
He claimed the state has become “mafia-free, riot-free, and curfew-free,” creating an environment that encourages development and investment.
He stressed that economic growth naturally leads to employment generation and criticised divisive politics based on caste, language, or region, saying such approaches do not serve the public interest.
The Chief Minister praised the “double-engine government” model, referring to the coordination between the state and central governments, and said it has accelerated welfare schemes and employment opportunities across Uttar Pradesh.
He also touched upon global challenges, including the ongoing crisis in West Asia, stating that despite international instability, India has managed the situation effectively under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Yogi Adityanath specifically commended Hardeep Singh Puri for handling the energy sector efficiently during periods of global turmoil.
He said that although oil companies faced significant pressure due to international circumstances, the government ensured that ordinary citizens continued to receive relief from rising fuel-related challenges.
The Chief Minister also expressed gratitude to the Petroleum Ministry and oil companies for contributing ₹100 crore through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds toward the construction of the stadium.
Providing details about the project, Yogi said the international cricket stadium will be spread across 46 acres and will have a seating capacity of around 30,000 spectators.
In addition, a massive sports complex will be developed on another 60 acres of reserved land nearby.
The facility will include modern infrastructure for both outdoor and indoor sports, aiming to nurture sporting talent at national and international levels.
The Chief Minister noted that the development of the stadium and sports complex is expected to transform the region economically as well.
He said the project would lead to the growth of hotels, restaurants, markets, and other commercial activities around the area, creating large-scale employment opportunities for residents.
He also mentioned that a veterinary college is being established in Tal Nador, further boosting the region’s educational and institutional infrastructure.
Addressing the gathering, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri praised the leadership of Yogi Adityanath and said Uttar Pradesh has emerged as a model of development and governance in recent years.
He remarked that the transformation witnessed in the state under Yogi’s leadership has been remarkable and unmatched in many parts of the country.
Puri stated that Uttar Pradesh was once primarily discussed because of its large population, but today it is increasingly recognised for rapid development, improved law and order, and effective governance.
According to him, significant improvements in security and administrative efficiency have restored investor confidence, accelerated economic growth, and positioned Uttar Pradesh as one of the most attractive destinations for investment in India.
