CJI Surya Kant Clarifies ‘Cockroaches’ Remark, Says Comments Were Directed at People Using Fake Degrees
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Saturday issued a clarification regarding his recent courtroom remarks that sparked controversy after some media reports suggested he had compared unemployed youth to “cockroaches”.
In an official statement, the CJI said his comments had been taken out of context and inaccurately reported by a section of the media.
He clarified that his criticism was never aimed at India’s unemployed youth, but specifically at individuals who allegedly entered respected professions using fake or fraudulent academic degrees.
Expressing disappointment over the interpretation of his remarks, Justice Surya Kant said he was referring to people who had managed to enter professions such as the legal field through bogus qualifications.
He added that similar individuals had also infiltrated areas like media, social media, and other respected sectors of society.
The Chief Justice described such people as “parasites”, stating that they damage the credibility and dignity of important institutions and professions.
Rejecting claims that he had insulted the youth of the country, the CJI said such allegations were completely baseless. He emphasised that he has immense faith in India’s younger generation and considers them the foundation of the country’s future progress.
Justice Surya Kant further stated that Indian youth continue to inspire him and expressed confidence in their ability to contribute to building a developed and stronger India in the years ahead.
He also noted that he shares a deep sense of mutual respect with the country’s young population and regards them as one of India’s greatest strengths for the future.
