Netanyahu Dismisses Iran Peace Deal as US Intensifies Economic Pressure on Tehran

Netanyahu Rejects Iran Peace Deal as US Warns Nations Over Tehran Business Ties
The Israeli prime minister voiced deep scepticism about diplomacy with Iran, while Washington warned other countries against maintaining commercial links with Tehran amid renewed regional tensions.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has cast doubt on the prospects of a diplomatic agreement with Iran as the US escalates economic pressure and warns countries against continuing business ties with Tehran.

Tel Aviv/Washington: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed strong doubt over the possibility of reaching a diplomatic settlement with Iran, saying he does not believe a meaningful agreement can be secured with the leadership in Tehran.

Netanyahu made the remarks at a public event on Tuesday night while discussing a recent meeting with US President Donald Trump.

According to AFP, the Israeli leader said the two had considered whether diplomacy could offer a path towards easing the conflict with Iran.

However, Netanyahu said he had told Trump that he saw little prospect of a successful agreement with the Iranian authorities, using harsh language to describe the leadership in Tehran.

He maintained that diplomacy would not deliver a workable deal and welcomed the Trump administration’s renewed economic campaign against Iran.

His remarks came as Washington moved to increase pressure on Tehran through its global financial and trade links.

The Trump administration has warned countries and businesses that they could face secondary sanctions if they continue commercial dealings with Iran.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described the strategy as an aggressive economic offensive aimed at Iran’s financial network.

At a press conference, he said Washington intended to give affected parties a limited opportunity to adjust but stressed that enforcement could proceed rapidly.

The new pressure campaign could have wider geopolitical implications because China has remained the leading purchaser of Iranian crude oil for years.

The issue may also become significant ahead of a planned meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington later in September.

Netanyahu’s rejection of a potential diplomatic breakthrough comes after months of military confrontation that have left Israel confronting an increasingly uncertain regional environment.

The US and Israel carried out joint strikes against Iran on February 28, an operation that resulted in the deaths of then Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior Iranian officials, according to the supplied reports.

Iran subsequently retaliated by targeting US and Israeli interests in the region and tightening control over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, raising concerns over the security of a major global energy route and the possibility of a wider regional escalation.

The military campaign has also generated debate within Israel over the broader strategic outcome of the confrontation.

Danny Citrinowicz, a former Israeli intelligence analyst specialising in Iran and now associated with the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv, told AFP that Israel may have achieved important operational successes without securing a comparable strategic outcome.

He described the broader approach towards Iran as a major failure of strategy, arguing that battlefield achievements had not translated into a decisive long-term political advantage.

Netanyahu has long opposed the 2015 nuclear agreement negotiated during the presidency of Barack Obama, maintaining a hard line against accommodation with Tehran.

With Washington now expanding economic pressure and Netanyahu publicly questioning the value of diplomacy, the prospect of a negotiated understanding between the US and Iran appears increasingly uncertain.

The next phase of the crisis could depend heavily on whether economic coercion, military deterrence or renewed diplomacy gains greater influence over the rapidly changing regional situation.
