New Ramayana Film Breaks Bollywood’s Political Mould, Offers Complex Portrayal of Ram and Ravana

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the Ranbir Kapoor-Yash starrer presents a nuanced interpretation of the Hindu epic, moving away from the divisive narratives that have surrounded several recent historical and mythological films.

Ramayana returns to the big screen with a different cinematic vision

Bollywood’s latest cinematic interpretation of the Ramayana has arrived with an approach that distinguishes it from several recent attempts to bring India’s historical and mythological narratives to the screen.

Featuring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram and Yash as Ravana, the first instalment of director Nitesh Tiwari’s ambitious project places greater emphasis on the psychological and moral dimensions of its central characters than on familiar political interpretations.

The film’s release comes three years after Adipurush, which attracted considerable criticism over its dialogue, presentation of characters, and portrayal of Ravana, played by Saif Ali Khan.

The new production appears determined to avoid similar controversies, concentrating instead on the emotional conflicts, philosophical questions and larger moral framework of the ancient epic.

One of the film’s distinguishing features is its willingness to explore the circumstances and motivations of characters traditionally presented through clearly defined moral categories.

Even Ravana, the principal antagonist, is given a backstory that helps explain his anger, ambition, and sense of humiliation.

Ravana’s rise and the conflict between two worlds

The narrative begins by presenting the Asuras as a community struggling for recognition and dignity. Ravana’s mother questions his preoccupation with music when his people are enduring hardship.

Deeply affected, he withdraws into the mountains to undertake severe penance. His devotion eventually earns him extraordinary powers, which he uses to challenge the authority of the Devas and seize Lanka.

After defeating Indra, Ravana’s growing dominance becomes a threat to the cosmic order. The defeated king of the gods approaches Lord Vishnu for intervention, setting the stage for the divine birth of Ram.

Vishnu subsequently takes human form in Ayodhya as the son of King Dashrath, portrayed by Arun Govil.

Ram develops into an accomplished warrior, although he is depicted as a reflective personality who does not seek conflict.

His understanding of duty and destiny becomes central to the film’s treatment of his character.

The familiar episode of his exile follows when Kaikeyi insists that her son Bharat should inherit the throne.

Ram accepts the decision without resistance and leaves Ayodhya for the forest, accompanied by his wife Sita, played by Sai Pallavi, and his younger brother Lakshman.

Surpanakha receives a more layered portrayal.l

The film also revisits the Surpanakha episode with a noticeable departure from conventional storytelling.

Ravana’s sister becomes attracted to Ram during his stay in the forest. When he declines her advances, explaining his commitment to Sita, she attempts to approach him again by disguising herself as his wife.

Lakshman responds by cutting off her nose, an incident that subsequently becomes a turning point in the conflict between Ram and Ravana.

However, the filmmakers do not present Surpanakha merely as a character whose humiliation serves as a plot device.

Her feelings and motivations receive greater attention. She questions Ram’s refusal by pointing to his father Dashrath’s multiple marriages, while Sita expresses disapproval of Lakshman’s violent response.

Sita’s reaction introduces an important moral dimension to the episode. She believes that the punishment inflicted on Surpanakha was excessive and warns that such an act could have serious consequences.

The suggestion that actions eventually return to those who commit them gives the episode an undertone of karma and retribution.

Ten heads reveal Ravana’s internal struggle

Surpanakha’s humiliation becomes the catalyst for Ravana’s decision to retaliate. His wife Mandodari, however, urges him to reconsider, recognising that Ram’s extraordinary abilities could indicate his divine identity.

A particularly striking sequence explores the symbolism of Ravana’s ten heads.

As he sits alone wrestling with the decision to confront Ram, ten manifestations of his personality emerge, each presenting a different argument. Their conflicting voices eventually converge when he resolves to pursue revenge.

This interpretation adds psychological depth to the traditional image of Dashanan.

Ravana is shown as a formidable ruler driven not only by arrogance and ambition but also by resentment over what he considers the unjust treatment of his community.

His character consequently occupies a more complicated space than that of a conventional villain.

His strengths and weaknesses, pride and insecurity, are presented as interconnected aspects of a powerful but deeply troubled personality.

Sita’s abduction brings the first instalment to a dramatic close

The film’s first chapter reaches its climax with Ravana’s abduction of Sita through deception. Jatayu attempts to prevent the kidnapping but is killed in the confrontation.

The loss leaves Ram devastated. Having already accepted exile, endured the death of his father and separated himself from the comforts of royal life, he now faces the disappearance of his wife.

In an emotionally charged moment, Ram reflects on the successive tragedies that have shaped his life.

But grief gradually gives way to determination. He resolves to travel to Lanka, confront Ravana and bring Sita back, regardless of the obstacles ahead.

The film ends with the promise of a larger confrontation, leaving the decisive battle between the two central figures for its next instalment.

A departure from politically charged mythological cinema

Beyond its visual spectacle and dramatic storytelling, the film’s approach to mythology is particularly noteworthy against the background of recent Hindi cinema.

Several historical and mythological productions in recent years have faced criticism for presenting historical personalities through religious or political stereotypes.

Films such as Padmaavat, Tanhaji, Panipat and Chhaava have generated debate over their treatment of historical figures and the extent to which contemporary political narratives have influenced cinematic interpretation.

The Kashmir Files and The Kerala Story have also been subjects of intense public debate, with critics questioning whether their narratives deepen divisions between communities.

Supporters of these films, on the other hand, have defended their attempts to highlight particular historical and social experiences.

The latest Ramayana appears to take a different route.

Rather than drawing sharp contemporary parallels or presenting its characters as representatives of present-day political identities, it focuses on the epic’s underlying themes of duty, sacrifice, pride, compassion and the consequences of human choices.

Ram emerges as a principled yet introspective warrior. He is compassionate and restrained, but possesses the strength to fight when circumstances leave him with no alternative.

Ravana, meanwhile, is portrayed as an adversary whose personal grievances and wounded pride gradually become destructive.

Interestingly, certain aspects of Ravana’s character recall Karna from the Mahabharata, another epic figure whose extraordinary abilities and sense of injustice coexist with personal weaknesses and tragic decisions.

Remembering the television Ramayana

The film’s attempt to preserve the spiritual and philosophical character of the epic also brings back memories of Ramanand Sagar’s hugely popular television serial Ramayan, broadcast on Doordarshan in the late 1980s.

Starring Arun Govil as Ram, the serial became a cultural phenomenon, attracting enormous audiences every Sunday. Its popularity extended beyond television, turning the epic into a subject of discussion in homes across the country.

Its broadcast coincided with a politically significant period. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad had already launched a campaign for a Ram temple at the disputed Babri Masjid site in Ayodhya, while the Congress government led by Rajiv Gandhi was dealing with growing political mobilisation around religious identity.

The serial itself largely maintained a devotional and narrative approach, but its popularity unfolded against the backdrop of an expanding Ram temple movement.

The BJP increasingly made the temple issue a central part of its political mobilisation, particularly during the 1989 election period.

The present cinematic adaptation, much like the television version, appears to be attempting to connect audiences with the essence of the epic without turning the story into an overt political statement.

Its central strength lies in avoiding simplistic distinctions between absolute goodness and unqualified evil. Ram’s moral authority is not diminished by his emotional vulnerability, while Ravana’s complexity does not excuse his actions.

By giving its characters emotional depth and allowing familiar episodes to raise questions about morality and responsibility, the film offers a fresh cinematic perspective on a story that has been retold for generations.

Ultimately, its most significant achievement may be its attempt to bring the Ramayana back to the realm of mythology, philosophy and human emotion rather than allowing it to become another battleground for contemporary ideological differences.
