Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the Uttar Pradesh government, accusing the state police of engaging in fake encounters and alleging a total collapse in law and order.

Speaking to reporters during his visit to Pilkichha Tadwa village in Jaunpur, where he paid tributes to Dharmraj Yadav, husband of former block chief Saryu Dei, Yadav accused the BJP-led government of fostering an environment of fear and unrest.

“Murders and rapes are happening daily. The entire state is in turmoil. Police are not just complicit but are committing crimes themselves—filing false cases and executing fake encounters,” Yadav said.

Dig at Yogi Adityanath

Yadav also mocked Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, questioning his technological literacy.

“The Chief Minister doesn’t know how to use a mobile phone. Give him a Vivo phone and he won’t be able to operate it. Give him an iPhone, and he’ll probably throw it against the wall,” the SP chief remarked sarcastically.

His comments came in response to Adityanath’s recent promise that Uttar Pradesh would become a prosperous state in three years and lead the country economically by eradicating poverty.

“He doesn’t understand the reality. These are just empty claims,” Yadav said.

Criticism of ‘One Nation, One Election’

Yadav also took aim at the Centre over its push for simultaneous elections under the ‘One Nation, One Election’ (ONOE) proposal. He warned that the BJP government would face resistance from the people even in the first phase of such elections.

“They talk about ONOE, but after the first round of voting itself, they’ll realise the public’s mood. People won’t accept this experiment,” he said.

His remarks came a day after Chief Minister Adityanath expressed confidence that simultaneous polls could be implemented by 2034, adding that those guided by a “nation first” ideology would support the move. Currently, a 39-member parliamentary committee is reviewing two bills related to ONOE, including one that proposes constitutional amendments.

On the Waqf Amendment Act

Addressing a question about the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025, Yadav expressed solidarity with those challenging the law.

“We stand with all those who have gone to the Supreme Court on this matter,” he said.

More than 10 petitions have been filed in the apex court, including by prominent political leaders, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), and Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, questioning the constitutional validity of the newly enacted law.

On Press Freedom and Rising Prices

Yadav also alleged that press freedom is under threat in the state.

“If journalists report the truth, they are sent to jail,” he claimed.

He further criticised the government over rising inflation, pointing to the soaring prices of LPG cylinders and fuel.

“Every day the cost of petrol and gas is going up, making life harder for common people,” he said.

Looking Ahead to 2027

Yadav expressed confidence that the BJP would be defeated in the next Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

“In 2027, BJP will be wiped out. Dalits, the poor, and the marginalized are looking toward the Samajwadi Party for justice and change,” he declare
