Dilip Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan: The Rare Bond That Went Beyond Bollywood
From a playful “Peshawari slap” to seeking guidance for Devdas, Shah Rukh Khan shared a deeply personal connection with Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu

In Bollywood, professional admiration does not always survive the changing fortunes of stardom.
Yet the relationship between Shah Rukh Khan and the late Dilip Kumar belonged to a different category altogether.
What developed between the two actors, along with Saira Banu, gradually acquired the warmth and intimacy of a family relationship.
For Saira Banu, Shah Rukh was not merely a younger actor who admired her husband. She affectionately described him as their “mooh-bola beta”, or son by affection.
Her fondness for him was strengthened by an unmistakable resemblance she saw between the young Shah Rukh and Dilip Kumar, particularly in their mannerisms, modesty, and ability to command the screen.
At one point, Saira Banu reflected that had she and Dilip Kumar had a son, she could imagine him looking like Shah Rukh.
That observation captured the emotional basis of a relationship that was never defined by professional hierarchy alone.
One of the stories that best illustrates their easy rapport dates back to an awards function hosted by Shah Rukh.
When Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu appeared on stage, Shah Rukh showed his respect by bowing before the veteran actor.
Dilip Kumar responded not with ceremony but with affection, giving the younger star a light tap on the cheek.
Shah Rukh later turned the incident into one of his favourite anecdotes.
Referring to Dilip Kumar’s Peshawar roots, he humorously suggested that even a gentle tap from a man from Peshawar could feel like a proper slap.
More importantly, he regarded the gesture as a blessing and joked that it had propelled his acting career years ahead.
Their relationship assumed an even more significant dimension when Shah Rukh agreed to play Devdas in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2002 adaptation.
The role carried an obvious challenge: Dilip Kumar had already created an iconic interpretation of the same character in Bimal Roy’s 1955 film.
Rather than approach the part without consultation, Shah Rukh went to Dilip Kumar himself.
The older actor offered him an observation about Devdas that went beyond conventional acting advice.
He saw the character as essentially a child emotionally trapped inside an adult man’s body—a perspective that helped Shah Rukh understand the vulnerability, indecision and immaturity at the heart of the character.
Taking on a role associated so strongly with his idol was daunting for Shah Rukh.
He has spoken of feeling almost foolish while attempting something Dilip Kumar had performed with such distinction.
But the elder actor’s encouragement gave the younger star the confidence to make the character his own.
Dilip Kumar, for his part, was generous enough to acknowledge that Shah Rukh’s interpretation could potentially surpass his own.
The relationship did not fade as Shah Rukh’s career grew to unprecedented heights.
During Dilip Kumar’s later years, Shah Rukh continued to visit him, spending time at his bedside and showing the same reverence he had displayed earlier in his career.
Reports of their meetings reflected a bond that had moved well beyond the world of cinema.
That affection became particularly visible after Dilip Kumar’s death.
Shah Rukh was among those who reached out to Saira Banu during the period of grief, offering comfort to a woman he had come to regard almost as family.
There was also a deeply touching sentiment attributed to Dilip Kumar himself.
On one occasion, with his hand resting on Shah Rukh’s head, he is remembered as telling Saira Banu that if they had a son, he would have been like Shah Rukh.
Perhaps that is what makes the relationship so memorable.
Dilip Kumar represented an earlier era of Hindi cinema, while Shah Rukh eventually became one of the defining stars of a new generation.
Between them, however, the connection was never simply about one actor inheriting the legacy of another.
It was built on affection, respect, guidance,e and a sense of belonging that cinema alone could not explain.
For Shah Rukh, the blessing of a legend became part of his personal journey. For Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu, the superstar they admired became, in their own words, something closer to a son.

फिल्मी दुनिया में सितारों के बीच दोस्ती और आत्मीयता की कई कहानियां मिलती हैं, लेकिन शाहरुख खान और दिलीप कुमार के रिश्ते की प्रकृति कुछ अलग थी।
यह संबंध धीरे-धीरे पेशेवर प्रशंसा से आगे बढ़कर पारिवारिक आत्मीयता में बदल गया था। दिलीप कुमार की पत्नी और अभिनेत्री सायरा बानो भी शाहरुख को परिवार के सदस्य की तरह मानती थीं।
सायरा बानो ने कई मौकों पर शाहरुख खान को अपना “मुंह-बोला बेटा” कहा था।
उनके इस लगाव के पीछे एक दिलचस्प समानता भी थी। उन्हें शाहरुख में युवा दिलीप कुमार की झलक दिखाई देती थी—उनकी विनम्रता, आकर्षण और कैमरे के सामने प्रभावशाली मौजूदगी में।
सायरा बानो ने एक बार यह तक कहा था कि अगर उनके और दिलीप कुमार के घर बेटा होता तो वह शायद शाहरुख खान जैसा दिखाई देता।
यह सिर्फ शक्ल-सूरत की तुलना नहीं थी, बल्कि उस भावनात्मक निकटता को भी दर्शाती थी जो दोनों परिवारों के बीच समय के साथ मजबूत होती गई।
इन दोनों अभिनेताओं के रिश्ते की गर्माहट का एक चर्चित किस्सा एक पुरस्कार समारोह से जुड़ा है।
कार्यक्रम की मेजबानी शाहरुख कर रहे थे और जब दिलीप कुमार तथा सायरा बानो मंच पर पहुंचे, तो शाहरुख ने झुककर दिग्गज अभिनेता के पैर छुए।
दिलीप कुमार ने इस सम्मान का जवाब औपचारिक शब्दों से नहीं, बल्कि अपने अंदाज में दिया।
उन्होंने शाहरुख के गाल पर हल्की-सी थपकी दी।
शाहरुख ने बाद में इसे मजाकिया अंदाज में “पेशावरी थप्पड़” कहा और बताया कि पेशावर के किसी व्यक्ति की हल्की-सी थपकी भी जोरदार थप्पड़ जैसी महसूस हो सकती है।
वह उस स्पर्श को अपने लिए आशीर्वाद की तरह देखते थे और मजाक में कहते थे कि उससे उनके करियर को जैसे कई सालों की रफ्तार मिल गई।
कुछ वर्ष बाद यही रिश्ता शाहरुख के करियर की एक महत्वपूर्ण चुनौती के दौरान और गहरा हुआ।
जब संजय लीला भंसाली की 2002 की फिल्म ‘देवदास’ में शाहरुख को मुख्य भूमिका निभाने का अवसर मिला, तो उनके सामने एक असाधारण तुलना भी थी।
इसी किरदार को 1955 में बिमल रॉय की फिल्म में दिलीप कुमार ने यादगार बना दिया था।
शाहरुख इस भूमिका को लेकर सीधे अपने आदर्श के पास पहुंचे। उन्होंने दिलीप कुमार से मुलाकात कर उनका आशीर्वाद लिया और किरदार को समझने की कोशिश की।
दिलीप कुमार ने ‘देवदास’ के मनोविज्ञान को समझाते हुए ऐसी दृष्टि दी, जिसने शाहरुख की तैयारी को प्रभावित किया।
उनके अनुसार देवदास ऐसा व्यक्ति था जिसके भीतर एक बच्चे की भावनात्मक अपरिपक्वता एक वयस्क शरीर में कैद थी।
जिस अभिनेता को वह अपना आदर्श मानते थे, उसी के मशहूर किए किरदार को निभाना शाहरुख के लिए आसान नहीं था।
उन्होंने खुद स्वीकार किया था कि दिलीप कुमार की शानदार प्रस्तुति के सामने उस भूमिका को दोबारा निभाने की कोशिश उन्हें चुनौतीपूर्ण लगती थी।
फिर भी दिग्गज अभिनेता का आशीर्वाद उनके आत्मविश्वास का आधार बना।
दिलीप कुमार ने भी शाहरुख की कोशिश को उदारता से देखा।
उन्होंने युवा अभिनेता की व्याख्या को लेकर सकारात्मक रुख अपनाया और यहां तक कहा कि शाहरुख का संस्करण उनके संस्करण से भी बेहतर हो सकता था।
समय के साथ शाहरुख खुद भारतीय सिनेमा के सबसे बड़े सितारों में शामिल हो गए, लेकिन दिलीप कुमार के प्रति उनका सम्मान कम नहीं हुआ।
अभिनेता के जीवन के अंतिम वर्षों में शाहरुख उनसे मिलने जाते रहे और उनके साथ समय बिताते थे। इन मुलाकातों में किसी औपचारिक स्टारडम से अधिक एक बेटे जैसी आत्मीयता दिखाई देती थी।
दिलीप कुमार के निधन के बाद भी यह रिश्ता अपनी भावनात्मक छाप छोड़ गया। शाहरुख ने शोक में डूबी सायरा बानो के प्रति अपना समर्थन जताया।
उस समय उनका व्यवहार एक प्रशंसक या साथी कलाकार का नहीं, बल्कि परिवार के करीबी सदस्य जैसा दिखाई दिया।
दिलीप कुमार से जुड़ी एक बेहद भावुक स्मृति में यह भी बताया जाता है कि उन्होंने कभी शाहरुख के सिर पर हाथ रखते हुए सायरा बानो से कहा था कि अगर उनका बेटा होता तो वह शाहरुख जैसा होता।
यही बात शायद इस रिश्ते की सबसे खूबसूरत तस्वीर पेश करती है।
एक तरफ हिंदी सिनेमा के स्वर्णिम दौर के महानायक दिलीप कुमार थे और दूसरी ओर बाद की पीढ़ी के सबसे प्रभावशाली सितारों में शामिल शाहरुख खान।
दोनों के बीच रिश्ता केवल अभिनय की विरासत का नहीं था।
यह कहानी उस सम्मान की थी जो एक पीढ़ी दूसरी पीढ़ी के कलाकार को देती है, उस स्नेह की थी जो समय के साथ पारिवारिक लगाव में बदल गया और उस आशीर्वाद की थी जिसे शाहरुख ने अपने जीवन और करियर की यादों में संजोकर रखा।
सायरा बानो के लिए शाहरुख “मूंह-बोले बेटे” थे और दिलीप कुमार के लिए वह एक ऐसे युवा कलाकार थे जिसमें उन्हें अपने बेटे की झलक दिखाई देती थी।
