Assam Flood Crisis Deepens: 21 Die in 24 Hours, Over 5.6 Lakh Affected as Rivers Cross Danger Mark
Guwahati: Assam’s flood situation worsened dramatically on Tuesday, with relentless rainfall and overflowing rivers triggering widespread devastation across the state.
According to the latest bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 21 people lost their lives within the last 24 hours, marking one of the deadliest days of this year’s monsoon season.
The scale of the disaster expanded rapidly as the number of flood-affected people surged from nearly three lakh over the previous two days to more than 5.6 lakh on Tuesday.
Vast stretches of Upper Assam remained submerged, disrupting normal life and forcing thousands of families to seek safer shelter.
Among the worst-hit regions, Sivasagar district continues to bear the brunt of the flooding.
The overflowing Dikhow River has inundated large areas of the district and, as of Wednesday morning, was flowing in what authorities described as a “severe flood situation.”
The highest number of casualties was reported from Sivasagar, where 13 people, including two children, lost their lives on Monday.
Neighbouring Charaideo and Jorhat districts reported six fatalities, while Golaghat recorded one death. With these fresh casualties, the flood-related death toll in Assam this year has climbed to 31.
As water levels continued to rise, relief and rescue operations intensified across the affected districts. Official figures show that 12,284 displaced residents are currently taking shelter in relief camps spread across seven districts.
Rescue teams have evacuated 6,101 people by boats, of whom 5,764 were rescued from Sivasagar alone.
Several major rivers in the state have been flowing well above the danger mark since Sunday, inundating extensive areas of Upper Assam and creating flood conditions rarely witnessed in recent years.
Continuous rainfall has further aggravated the situation, hampering rescue efforts and increasing the risk of additional flooding.
According to the latest hydrological assessment on Wednesday morning, the Disang River at Nanglamoraghat in Sivasagar, the Dikhow River in Sivasagar, the Dhansiri River at Numaligarh in Golaghat and the Kushiyara River in Karimganj of the Barak Valley were all flowing between “severe” and “extreme” flood levels, prompting authorities to maintain a high alert across vulnerable areas.

गुवाहाटी: असम में बाढ़ की स्थिति मंगलवार को और भयावह हो गई। लगातार हो रही बारिश और उफनती नदियों ने राज्य के कई हिस्सों में व्यापक तबाही मचाई है।
असम राज्य आपदा प्रबंधन प्राधिकरण (एएसडीएमए) की ताजा रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, पिछले 24 घंटों में 21 लोगों की मौत हो गई, जिससे यह इस वर्ष के मानसून का सबसे दुखद दौर बन गया है।
बाढ़ का दायरा तेजी से बढ़ने के साथ प्रभावित लोगों की संख्या भी लगातार बढ़ रही है। रविवार और सोमवार तक जहां लगभग तीन लाख लोग बाढ़ की चपेट में थे, वहीं मंगलवार तक यह आंकड़ा बढ़कर 5.6 लाख से अधिक पहुंच गया।
ऊपरी असम के विशाल इलाके जलमग्न हो गए हैं, जिससे सामान्य जनजीवन बुरी तरह प्रभावित हुआ है और हजारों परिवारों को सुरक्षित स्थानों पर शरण लेनी पड़ी है।
सबसे अधिक प्रभावित जिलों में शिवसागर अब भी शीर्ष पर बना हुआ है। देखो (दिखाऊ) नदी के उफान से जिले के बड़े हिस्से पानी में डूब गए हैं। बुधवार सुबह तक नदी का जलस्तर प्रशासन की श्रेणी के अनुसार “गंभीर बाढ़ की स्थिति” में बना हुआ था।
सबसे ज्यादा जनहानि भी शिवसागर में दर्ज की गई, जहां सोमवार को दो बच्चों सहित 13 लोगों की मौत हो गई। पड़ोसी जिलों चराइदेव और जोरहाट में छह लोगों की जान गई, जबकि गोलाघाट में एक व्यक्ति की मृत्यु हुई।
इन नई मौतों के साथ राज्य में इस वर्ष बाढ़ से मरने वालों की कुल संख्या बढ़कर 31 हो गई है।
हालात बिगड़ने के बाद राहत एवं बचाव अभियान तेज कर दिए गए हैं। सरकारी आंकड़ों के अनुसार सात जिलों में स्थापित राहत शिविरों में 12,284 विस्थापित लोग शरण लिए हुए हैं।
अब तक 6,101 लोगों को नौकाओं के माध्यम से सुरक्षित स्थानों पर पहुंचाया गया है, जिनमें से 5,764 लोगों को अकेले शिवसागर जिले से निकाला गया।
रविवार से राज्य की कई प्रमुख नदियां लगातार खतरे के निशान से काफी ऊपर बह रही हैं। इसके चलते ऊपरी असम के बड़े भूभाग में ऐसी बाढ़ की स्थिति उत्पन्न हो गई है, जैसी पिछले कई वर्षों में देखने को नहीं मिली थी।
लगातार वर्षा के कारण जलस्तर में और वृद्धि हो रही है, जिससे राहत एवं बचाव कार्यों के सामने नई चुनौतियां खड़ी हो गई हैं।
बुधवार सुबह जारी जलस्तर रिपोर्ट के अनुसार शिवसागर के नांगलामोराघाट पर दिसांग नदी, शिवसागर में दिखो नदी, गोलाघाट के नुमालीगढ़ में धानसिरी नदी तथा बराक घाटी के करीमगंज में कुशियारा नदी सभी “गंभीर” से “अत्यंत गंभीर बाढ़” की श्रेणी में बह रही थीं।
प्रशासन ने संवेदनशील इलाकों में सतर्कता बढ़ा दी है और लोगों से सुरक्षित स्थानों पर रहने तथा नदी किनारे जाने से बचने की अपील की है।
