Badrinath Temple Donation Scam: SIT Arrests Second BKTC Official in Alleged Misappropriation of Devotees’ Offerings
Fresh developments have emerged in the investigation into the alleged embezzlement of cash and valuables offered by devotees at Badrinath Dham, with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) arresting another official of the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC).
The latest arrest marks the second breakthrough in the high-profile probe into suspected financial irregularities linked to the counting of offerings made through thali bhent.
The case came to light after a formal complaint prompted the registration of an FIR at Badrinath Police Station.
During the preliminary inquiry, investigators gathered documentary and electronic evidence that led to the arrest of the first accused, Pramod Nautiyal, on July 12.
Police said he remains in judicial custody while the investigation continues.
According to investigators, the SIT carried out an extensive examination of CCTV recordings from the room where donations were counted on several dates and questioned multiple witnesses connected with the process.
The probe allegedly revealed that Rajendra Chauhan, a permanent BKTC employee serving as the temple officer and supervising the counting of offerings, colluded with Nautiyal to siphon off a portion of the cash and valuables received from devotees.
Officials said CCTV footage recorded on June 22, June 25 and June 29 allegedly captured Rajendra Chauhan repeatedly concealing bundles of ₹500 currency notes, donated ornaments and other valuable articles in his pockets during the counting process.
Based on the electronic evidence and other material collected during the investigation, police invoked Section 61(2)(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and formally named Chauhan as a co-accused in the case.
Following the emergence of the evidence, a police team brought Rajendra Chauhan from Jyotirmath to Badrinath Police Station for detailed interrogation on July 17. After questioning, investigators placed him under arrest.
Earlier investigations had indicated that Pramod Nautiyal allegedly removed ₹500 currency notes, packets containing gold and silver coins, a sacred Shaligram stone and a packet of saffron from the donation counting room on different occasions and unlawfully retained them.
The alleged acts surfaced during the ongoing inquiry into the handling of temple offerings.
Even before his arrest, the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee had initiated departmental proceedings against Nautiyal.
The committee had suspended him from service and issued a show-cause notice on July 3 after allegations of misconduct and irregularities in the discharge of his official responsibilities came to light.

बदरीनाथ धाम में श्रद्धालुओं द्वारा चढ़ाए गए नकद और बहुमूल्य चढ़ावे में कथित गड़बड़ी की जांच कर रही विशेष जांच टीम (एसआईटी) को एक और महत्वपूर्ण सफलता मिली है।
जांच एजेंसी ने बदरीनाथ-केदारनाथ मंदिर समिति (बीकेटीसी) के एक अन्य अधिकारी को गिरफ्तार किया है। इस बहुचर्चित मामले में यह दूसरी गिरफ्तारी है, जिससे दान राशि और बहुमूल्य वस्तुओं के कथित दुरुपयोग की जांच और तेज हो गई है।
पूरा मामला एक शिकायत दर्ज होने के बाद सामने आया, जिसके आधार पर बदरीनाथ थाने में प्राथमिकी दर्ज की गई।
शुरुआती जांच के दौरान जुटाए गए दस्तावेजी और इलेक्ट्रॉनिक साक्ष्यों के आधार पर पुलिस ने 12 जुलाई को प्रथम आरोपी प्रमोद नौटियाल को गिरफ्तार किया था। फिलहाल वह न्यायिक हिरासत में है और मामले की जांच जारी है।
जांच अधिकारियों के अनुसार, एसआईटी ने थाली भेंट की गणना कक्ष में विभिन्न तिथियों के सीसीटीवी फुटेज का बारीकी से विश्लेषण किया तथा कई कर्मचारियों और प्रत्यक्षदर्शियों के बयान दर्ज किए।
जांच में कथित रूप से यह सामने आया कि बीकेटीसी के स्थायी कर्मचारी तथा तत्कालीन मंदिर अधिकारी राजेंद्र चौहान, जो चढ़ावे की गणना प्रक्रिया के प्रभारी थे, ने प्रमोद नौटियाल के साथ मिलकर श्रद्धालुओं द्वारा चढ़ाए गए नकद और अन्य बहुमूल्य वस्तुओं का एक हिस्सा हड़पने की साजिश रची।
पुलिस के मुताबिक, 22, 25 और 29 जून की सीसीटीवी रिकॉर्डिंग में राजेंद्र चौहान कई बार ₹500 के नोटों की गड्डियां, दान में प्राप्त आभूषण तथा अन्य कीमती वस्तुएं अपनी जेब में रखते हुए कथित रूप से दिखाई दिए हैं।
इलेक्ट्रॉनिक साक्ष्यों और जांच के दौरान एकत्र अन्य प्रमाणों के आधार पर मामले में भारतीय न्याय संहिता (बीएनएस) की धारा 61(2)(क) जोड़ी गई और राजेंद्र चौहान को सह-आरोपी बनाया गया।
साक्ष्य सामने आने के बाद पुलिस की एक टीम 17 जुलाई को राजेंद्र चौहान को ज्योतिर्मठ से पूछताछ के लिए बदरीनाथ थाने लेकर आई। विस्तृत पूछताछ के पश्चात उन्हें औपचारिक रूप से गिरफ्तार कर लिया गया।
इससे पहले की जांच में यह भी आरोप सामने आया था कि प्रमोद नौटियाल ने अलग-अलग अवसरों पर गिनती कक्ष से ₹500 के नोट, सोने-चांदी के सिक्कों के पैकेट, एक शालिग्राम शिला तथा केसर का पैकेट निकालकर अवैध रूप से अपने कब्जे में ले लिया था।
ये कथित अनियमितताएं मंदिर में प्राप्त चढ़ावे की जांच के दौरान उजागर हुईं।
गिरफ्तारी से पहले ही बदरीनाथ-केदारनाथ मंदिर समिति ने प्रमोद नौटियाल के विरुद्ध विभागीय कार्रवाई शुरू कर दी थी।
समिति ने उन्हें निलंबित करते हुए 3 जुलाई को कारण बताओ नोटिस जारी किया था, क्योंकि उनके आधिकारिक दायित्वों के निर्वहन में कथित अनियमितताओं और गंभीर लापरवाही के आरोप सामने आए थे।
