Bareilly Woman Murder Case: Trader Son Arrested After Police Uncover Alleged Frame-Up Plot
Police say an investigation, postmortem findings, and polygraph examinations helped expose the alleged role of the victim’s son after five relatives were initially named in the FIR.
Bareilly: A murder investigation in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district has taken an unexpected turn with police arresting the son of a 60-year-old woman, nearly two months after five relatives were named as suspects in her killing.
Police now allege that the woman’s son, Mahendra Singh, 35, killed his mother while she was asleep and attempted to divert suspicion towards people with whom his family had a longstanding dispute.
The woman, Ram Beti, was staying at her son’s home in Kuddha village when she was killed on August 6.
Her eldest son, Gajendra Singh, subsequently approached the Bhamora police station and accused five distant relatives of involvement in the murder.
The investigation initially focused on those named in the complaint.
However, as investigators examined the accounts of the people involved and checked their movements around the time of the killing, questions began to emerge about the original version of events.
According to police, Mahendra had told investigators that he and his mother had eaten dinner at around 7.30 pm on the night of the incident.
He claimed that he remained with her until approximately 11.30 pm and later moved her cot outdoors, placing it beneath a tree at her request.
Mahendra said he then went with his wife and children to his elder brother’s nearby house to sleep. When he returned the following morning, he allegedly told police he discovered his mother dead.
Investigators said the postmortem findings did not fully support the timeline given by Mahendra. The doctor who examined the body estimated that the fatal attack had occurred roughly two hours after the evening meal.
That discrepancy prompted investigators to subject Mahendra to further questioning, police said. During the questioning, officers alleged, he eventually acknowledged responsibility for the killing.
Police say the investigation also uncovered a possible motive for the alleged attempt to implicate the five relatives.
There had reportedly been a prolonged dispute between Mahendra’s family and their distant relative Nathu Singh over the operation of a ration shop.
Investigators further found that Mahendra believed Nathu and his family had played a role in falsely implicating his nephew in a case registered under the Arms Act.
According to the police version, these tensions may have provided the backdrop for the alleged plan to shift suspicion onto the rival family.
Investigators also checked the locations and movements of the five people named in the original FIR to establish whether they could have been present when the murder occurred.
As part of that process, police obtained court approval to conduct polygraph examinations on six people — the five individuals originally named as accused and a relative of one of them.
Police said the results of the examination, together with other evidence and the postmortem findings, helped investigators reassess the case.
The investigation team also sought polygraph examinations of Mahendra, his wife and his elder brother Gajendra. The three, however, declined to undergo the tests, according to police.
Investigators said the accumulated evidence eventually pointed towards Mahendra rather than the five people named in the initial complaint.
“We found Mahendra Singh’s involvement in the case and arrested him on Thursday,” Inspector Sanjay Dheer, who heads the Special Investigation Team, said.
Police allege that Mahendra attacked his mother on the head with a blunt object while she was asleep outside the house. The alleged purpose, investigators said, was to make the killing appear to have been carried out by his rivals.
The police account effectively clears the five people who were initially accused, although the final legal determination of responsibility will rest with the judicial process.
The case highlights how the investigation changed direction after police began testing the original narrative against forensic findings, the victim’s postmortem examination, and the accounts of those connected with the family dispute.

बरेली: उत्तर प्रदेश के बरेली जिले में 60 वर्षीय महिला की हत्या की जांच ने उस समय नया मोड़ ले लिया, जब पुलिस ने मामले में उसके ही बेटे को गिरफ्तार कर लिया।
हत्या के बाद पांच दूर के रिश्तेदारों के खिलाफ मामला दर्ज कराया गया था, लेकिन जांच आगे बढ़ने पर पुलिस का दावा है कि वारदात के पीछे महिला का बेटा महेंद्र सिंह ही था।
पुलिस के मुताबिक, 35 वर्षीय महेंद्र ने कथित तौर पर सोते समय अपनी मां राम बेटी के सिर पर किसी भारी वस्तु से हमला किया और हत्या का शक अपने परिवार के उन रिश्तेदारों पर डालने की कोशिश की, जिनसे उसका लंबे समय से विवाद चल रहा था।
राम बेटी घटना से एक दिन पहले अपने बेटे के घर रहने आई थीं। 6 अगस्त की रात उनकी हत्या के बाद महेंद्र के बड़े भाई गजेंद्र सिंह ने भमोरा थाने में पांच दूर के रिश्तेदारों के खिलाफ प्राथमिकी दर्ज कराई थी।
शुरुआत में पुलिस ने उन्हीं लोगों के खिलाफ लगाए गए आरोपों की जांच की। लेकिन पूछताछ, घटनास्थल से जुड़े तथ्यों और आरोपियों की घटना के समय मौजूदगी की पड़ताल के दौरान जांचकर्ताओं को मामले की शुरुआती कहानी में कुछ ऐसी बातें मिलीं, जो आपस में मेल नहीं खा रही थीं।
पुलिस के अनुसार, महेंद्र ने शुरू में बताया था कि उसने और उसकी मां ने रात करीब साढ़े सात बजे भोजन किया था। उसका कहना था कि वह लगभग साढ़े 11 बजे तक अपनी मां के साथ रहा। इसके बाद मां की इच्छा पर उसने उनकी चारपाई घर के बाहर एक पेड़ के नीचे रख दी।
महेंद्र ने पुलिस को बताया कि इसके बाद वह अपनी पत्नी और बच्चों के साथ पास में रहने वाले अपने बड़े भाई के घर सोने चला गया था। उसके मुताबिक, अगली सुबह घर लौटने पर उसने अपनी मां को मृत पाया।
जांच में पोस्टमार्टम रिपोर्ट सामने आने के बाद पुलिस को इस बयान पर संदेह हुआ। पुलिस का कहना है कि पोस्टमार्टम करने वाले चिकित्सक ने मृत्यु का समय रात के भोजन के करीब दो घंटे बाद का अनुमान बताया था।
यहीं से जांच ने नया रुख लिया। पुलिस के मुताबिक, महेंद्र से घटनाक्रम को लेकर विस्तार से पूछताछ की गई और उसके बयानों में मिली विसंगतियों के बारे में सवाल किए गए। पूछताछ के दौरान उसने कथित तौर पर हत्या की बात स्वीकार कर ली।
जांचकर्ताओं ने इसके साथ ही हत्या के पीछे संभावित पारिवारिक विवाद की भी पड़ताल की। पुलिस के अनुसार, महेंद्र के परिवार और उनके दूर के रिश्तेदार नाथू सिंह के बीच राशन की दुकान चलाने को लेकर काफी समय से विवाद था।
पुलिस को यह भी पता चला कि महेंद्र को संदेह था कि नाथू सिंह और उसके परिवार ने उसके भतीजे को झूठे तरीके से आर्म्स एक्ट के मामले में फंसाया था। जांच एजेंसी के अनुसार, यही रंजिश हत्या का आरोप रिश्तेदारों पर डालने की कथित कोशिश से जुड़ी हो सकती है।
पुलिस ने प्राथमिकी में नामजद पांचों लोगों की उस समय की गतिविधियों और मौजूदगी की भी जांच की, जब हत्या होने की बात सामने आई थी।
जांच के दौरान अदालत से अनुमति लेकर पुलिस ने छह लोगों का पॉलीग्राफ टेस्ट कराया। इनमें प्राथमिकी में आरोपी बनाए गए पांच लोग और उनमें से एक का रिश्तेदार शामिल था।
पुलिस का कहना है कि पॉलीग्राफ जांच से मिली जानकारी को पोस्टमार्टम रिपोर्ट और अन्य साक्ष्यों के साथ मिलाकर देखने पर मामले की तस्वीर बदलने लगी।
दूसरी ओर, पुलिस ने महेंद्र, उसकी पत्नी और उसके बड़े भाई गजेंद्र सिंह का भी पॉलीग्राफ टेस्ट कराने की कोशिश की थी। पुलिस के अनुसार, तीनों ने इस जांच से गुजरने से इनकार कर दिया।
विशेष जांच दल की पड़ताल आगे बढ़ने के साथ पुलिस का दावा है कि उपलब्ध साक्ष्य महेंद्र की भूमिका की ओर इशारा करने लगे। इसके बाद उसे गिरफ्तार कर लिया गया।
विशेष जांच दल का नेतृत्व कर रहे इंस्पेक्टर संजय धीर ने कहा कि जांच में महेंद्र की संलिप्तता सामने आने के बाद गुरुवार को उसकी गिरफ्तारी की गई।
पुलिस के अनुसार, महेंद्र ने कथित तौर पर घर के बाहर सो रही अपनी मां के सिर पर किसी कुंद वस्तु से वार किया था। जांचकर्ताओं का आरोप है कि उसका उद्देश्य हत्या का आरोप अपने उन रिश्तेदारों पर डालना था, जिनसे परिवार का विवाद चल रहा था।
इस घटनाक्रम के बाद हत्या के मामले में शुरुआत में आरोपी बनाए गए पांच रिश्तेदारों की भूमिका पर पुलिस की जांच का रुख बदल गया है। हालांकि, किसी व्यक्ति की आपराधिक जिम्मेदारी का अंतिम निर्धारण अदालत की न्यायिक प्रक्रिया के तहत होगा।
बरेली का यह मामला इस बात का उदाहरण भी है कि कैसे शुरुआती शिकायत में सामने आई कहानी को घटनास्थल से जुड़े तथ्यों, चिकित्सकीय साक्ष्यों और संदिग्धों के बयानों से मिलाने के बाद जांच की दिशा बदल सकती है।
