Bargi Dam Tragedy: Storm Capsizes Cruise Boat in Jabalpur, 4 Dead, Many Missing as Rescue Efforts Intensify
A calm evening turned into a nightmare on the waters of the Narmada River when a sudden storm capsized a cruise boat near the Bargi Dam in Jabalpur on Thursday.
At least four people have lost their lives, while several others are still missing, leaving families anxiously waiting along the riverbanks for news.
The boat, carrying around 35 to 40 passengers, was near Khamaria Tapu — a small island in the Bargi Dam area — when the weather changed abruptly. Strong winds picked up without warning, churning the river into rough waves.
Within moments, the vessel lost balance, overturned, and began to sink.
Chaos on the Water
Eyewitness accounts and officials say the situation unfolded rapidly, giving passengers little time to react.
Many were thrown into the water as the boat capsized. In the chaos, local fishermen and rescue teams rushed in, pulling survivors out of the river.
So far, at least 18 people have been rescued. However, authorities fear that 15 to 18 passengers are still unaccounted for.
City Superintendent of Police Anjul Mishra confirmed the toll, saying four bodies have been recovered and search operations are ongoing at full pace.
Rescue Operation Through the Night
As darkness fell, the rescue mission only grew more challenging. Teams from the police and State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF) continued their search under difficult conditions.
Motorboats crisscrossed the water, their beams cutting through the darkness as rescuers scanned for any sign of life.
In shallow stretches near the banks, personnel formed human chains, feeling their way through the water. Others searched for floating debris, hoping to locate survivors.
Bodies recovered from the river were carefully brought ashore in inflatable boats. Survivors, many shaken and exhausted, were wrapped in blankets and moved to safer areas as officials coordinated relief efforts along the shoreline.
Government Responds
The tragedy quickly drew the attention of the state leadership. Mohan Yadav directed senior officials to reach the site immediately and oversee rescue operations.
Public Works Minister Rakesh Singh visited the location soon after the incident. He described the incident as deeply unfortunate and confirmed that the state government has announced compensation of ₹4 lakh for the families of those who died.
“For now, our entire focus is on rescuing those who are missing. A detailed investigation will follow, and responsibility will be fixed,” Singh said, adding that questions around weather warnings and safety measures would be examined later.
Questions That Remain
While the sudden storm appears to be the immediate cause, officials have indicated that a thorough inquiry will look into whether safety protocols were followed.
This includes checking passenger limits, the availability of life jackets, and whether any weather alerts were issued or ignored.
Senior district officials, including the collector and police officers, remained on-site late into the night, closely monitoring the operation. Authorities described the ongoing effort as being carried out on a “war footing”.
A Night of Waiting
Along the banks of the Narmada, the mood remains tense and heavy. Families of passengers are still waiting, hoping for news of their loved ones. For many, the river that sustains life in the region has, in a matter of hours, become a place of fear and uncertainty.
As rescue teams continue their search, the focus remains on finding the missing — and understanding how a routine boat ride turned into such a devastating tragedy.
