Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari Announces School Curriculum Changes, Renews Attack on CJP
Kolkata: Changes to school education and a renewed campaign around national identity emerged as key themes in West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s latest political address, in which he announced forthcoming syllabus revisions and intensified his criticism of the state’s former ruling parties and the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).
Adhikari said students would see changes in their academic curriculum from the next school year.
He also stated that the National Education Policy (NEP) would be implemented in West Bengal, signalling a possible shift in the state’s approach to education.
Alongside these announcements, the chief minister argued that schools should do more to encourage national consciousness among young people.
His remarks included sharp accusations against the Left Front and the Trinamool Congress (TMC), as well as a fresh verbal attack on the CJP.
Education policy becomes a political battleground
The chief minister questioned how the previous TMC administration had presented certain political events in school history textbooks.
He specifically objected to the inclusion of people associated with the agitation that preceded Tata Motors’ withdrawal of its Nano car project from Singur.
Adhikari said the school syllabus would be revised in the coming academic year. However, he did not provide a detailed account of which chapters or subjects would be changed.
His announcement comes amid a broader debate over the role of education in shaping students’ understanding of history, national identity and regional culture.
The proposed introduction of the NEP is likely to draw attention to how the state intends to align its education system with the national framework.
Proposes debates and quizzes to encourage patriotism
Speaking at Ramnagar on Sunday, Adhikari advocated organising regular public-speaking contests, quizzes and debates in educational institutions.
According to a report by news agency PTI, he believes such activities could help cultivate nationalist values among students.
He also alleged that the previous TMC government had sought to discourage enrolment in the National Cadet Corps (NCC) and promoted the Jai Hind Vahini instead.
Defending the NCC, Adhikari argued that participation could help students prepare for opportunities in the armed forces, including recruitment under the Agniveer scheme.
His remarks placed student activities and military preparedness within his wider argument about national awareness.
Accuses previous administrations of diluting Bengal’s identity
Adhikari also revisited longstanding political disagreements over Bengali identity and the legacy of previous governments.
He criticised both the 34-year Left Front administration and the 15-year TMC government, accusing them of failing to protect the state’s cultural heritage.
He alleged that the previous administration’s approach to regional symbols, including a separate state song, a flag and the slogan “Joy Bangla”, reflected an attempt to shape Bengal’s identity in a manner he considered inappropriate.
These claims formed part of his broader criticism of what he described as appeasement politics and a lack of commitment to nationalism.
The remarks reflect the continuing political contest in Bengal over the relationship between regional pride and national identity.
CJP comes under another round of criticism
The chief minister also directed his attention towards the CJP, urging people to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In doing so, he used the expressions “Dimagi Naxal” and “tukde tukde gang” to describe groups he considers ideologically opposed to his political position.
His latest attack followed comments made on Sunday, when he compared the alleged spread of the CJP’s influence to the proliferation of pests and the coronavirus.
He also invoked the name of an insect-repellent product in a disparaging reference to the group.
The remarks underline the increasingly combative rhetoric surrounding the organisation, although the speech did not provide independent evidence for the allegations levelled against it.
Statement follows visit to family affected by Kolkata stampede
Adhikari’s remarks came after he met the relatives of a person who died in a stampede at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata on October 17.
Following that meeting, his public comments expanded into a broader critique of the political choices made by previous state governments and the role of education in transmitting cultural and national values.
The next academic year’s proposed syllabus changes and the implementation of the NEP will be important indicators of how the government intends to translate its stated priorities into policy.
Further details will be needed to establish the precise scope of the planned reforms.
