Black Sea Crisis Deepens: Rescue Sought for 13 Indian Sailors Stranded at Ukraine Port Under Missile Threat
Fresh concerns have emerged over the safety of Indian merchant sailors after a cargo vessel carrying 13 Indian crew members remained stranded at Ukraine’s Chornomorsk port, where continuing Russian missile and drone strikes have turned the Black Sea coastline into an increasingly dangerous war zone.
An urgent intervention has been sought by the Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI), which warned that the crew aboard MV AMIR1 has been left with no secure route to leave the conflict-hit port.
The vessel is carrying 15 seafarers, including 13 Indians, who have remained trapped as hostilities continue around them.
Describing the situation as extremely alarming, the union said the sailors have been forced to live with the constant fear that the next strike could hit their ship.
Explosions have repeatedly been reported close to the harbour, making normal operations virtually impossible and placing the crew under severe psychological strain.
Images shared by the organisation, including a video said to have been filmed from the vessel itself, appear to show dense smoke rising near the port area.
The union said the visuals reflect the dangers confronting the crew and underline the need for immediate evacuation before conditions deteriorate further.
Appeals have been addressed to the Government of India, the Ministry of External Affairs, the shipowners, the vessel’s flag administration and all other relevant maritime authorities to coordinate a safe extraction of the crew.
The FSUI cautioned that any delay would expose the sailors to even greater danger.
No official response had been issued either by the Ministry of External Affairs or by the company operating the vessel until this report was prepared.
Mounting anxiety over the crew’s safety follows a series of attacks on commercial ships navigating Ukraine’s southern coastline.
Diplomatic tensions intensified only a day ago after India summoned Ukraine’s Ambassador in New Delhi over the strike on MV OMORFI near Odesa, where one Indian sailor was killed while four Indians were serving on board.
Reacting sharply to that incident, New Delhi described attacks on civilian merchant vessels as unacceptable, saying such strikes endanger maritime security, freedom of navigation and international commerce.
India also urged Ukrainian authorities to ensure that commercial shipping remains outside the ambit of military operations.
Concern over the Black Sea shipping route has been building steadily in recent weeks. Before the OMORFI incident, MV AGN RAGNAR was struck near Odesa with four Indian crew members on board.
Two survived after being rescued, while search operations continue for two others who remain unaccounted for.
Another deadly attack had already underscored the risks earlier this month when MV Golden Leo came under fire near Odesa.
Ten crew members, including four Indians, lost their lives in that strike, prompting India to formally convey its concerns to Russia regarding the safety of Indian nationals employed on merchant vessels operating in the conflict zone.
Repeated attacks on civilian cargo ships have renewed fears over the security of one of the world’s most vital maritime trade corridors.
Although ports such as Chornomorsk and Odesa continue to handle commercial cargo, ongoing military operations have left many merchant crews effectively marooned aboard their vessels for days, and in some cases weeks.
Keeping these developments in view, the Ministry of External Affairs has advised Indian citizens to exercise extreme caution before accepting assignments on merchant ships operating in or transiting through the Black Sea.

रूस-यूक्रेन युद्ध के बीच काला सागर क्षेत्र में कार्यरत भारतीय नाविकों की सुरक्षा को लेकर चिंता और गहरा गई है। यूक्रेन के चोर्नोमोर्स्क बंदरगाह पर खड़े एक मालवाहक जहाज में सवार 13 भारतीय नाविक लगातार सैन्य हमलों के बीच फंसे हुए हैं और उनकी सुरक्षित निकासी की मांग तेज हो गई है।
भारतीय नाविकों के संगठन फॉरवर्ड सीमेन्स यूनियन ऑफ इंडिया (एफएसयूआई) ने चेतावनी दी है कि एमवी एएमआईआर1 पर मौजूद चालक दल अत्यंत गंभीर परिस्थितियों का सामना कर रहा है।
जहाज पर कुल 15 सदस्य हैं, जिनमें 13 भारतीय शामिल हैं। युद्ध की वजह से जहाज बंदरगाह से सुरक्षित रूप से निकल नहीं पा रहा है।
संगठन का कहना है कि बंदरगाह के आसपास लगातार ड्रोन और मिसाइल हमले हो रहे हैं, जिससे जहाज पर मौजूद चालक दल चौबीसों घंटे भय के साये में जीवन बिताने को मजबूर है।
किसी भी समय सीधा हमला होने की आशंका ने नाविकों पर गहरा मानसिक दबाव बना दिया है।
स्थिति की गंभीरता को रेखांकित करने के लिए यूनियन ने जहाज से रिकॉर्ड किया गया एक वीडियो भी सार्वजनिक किया है।
वीडियो में बंदरगाह के आसपास धुएं के घने गुबार दिखाई देते हैं। यूनियन का कहना है कि यह दृश्य इस बात का प्रमाण है कि चालक दल किस तरह युद्ध की सीधी चपेट में फंसा हुआ है।
एफएसयूआई ने केंद्र सरकार, विदेश मंत्रालय, जहाज के स्वामियों, पोत के ध्वज राज्य और अन्य समुद्री प्राधिकरणों से तत्काल समन्वित कार्रवाई करते हुए सभी नाविकों को सुरक्षित बाहर निकालने की अपील की है।
संगठन ने आगाह किया है कि बचाव अभियान में देरी का मतलब खतरे को और बढ़ाना होगा।
समाचार लिखे जाने तक न तो विदेश मंत्रालय और न ही जहाज संचालित करने वाली कंपनी की ओर से इस मामले पर कोई आधिकारिक प्रतिक्रिया सामने आई थी।
भारतीय नाविकों की सुरक्षा को लेकर चिंता ऐसे समय बढ़ी है जब यूक्रेन के समुद्री क्षेत्र में व्यापारी जहाज लगातार हमलों का निशाना बन रहे हैं।
हाल ही में ओडेसा के निकट एमवी ओमोरफी पर हुए हमले के बाद भारत ने यूक्रेन के राजदूत को तलब किया था। उस जहाज पर चार भारतीय सवार थे और एक भारतीय नाविक की मृत्यु हो गई थी।
उस घटना पर कड़ी प्रतिक्रिया देते हुए भारत ने स्पष्ट कहा था कि नागरिक मालवाहक जहाजों पर हमले समुद्री सुरक्षा, नौवहन की स्वतंत्रता और वैश्विक व्यापार के लिए गंभीर चुनौती हैं।
साथ ही यूक्रेन से यह सुनिश्चित करने का आग्रह किया गया था कि सैन्य अभियानों के दौरान व्यावसायिक जहाजों को निशाना न बनाया जाए।
इससे पहले एमवी एजीएन रैग्नार भी ओडेसा के निकट हमले की चपेट में आया था। जहाज पर मौजूद चार भारतीयों में से दो को सुरक्षित निकाल लिया गया, जबकि दो अन्य की तलाश अब भी जारी है।
इसी महीने एमवी गोल्डन लियो पर हुए हमले ने भी भारत की चिंता बढ़ा दी थी। उस घटना में चार भारतीयों सहित दस चालक दल के सदस्यों की मौत हो गई थी।
इसके बाद भारत ने रूस के कार्यवाहक राजदूत को तलब कर युद्ध क्षेत्र में कार्यरत भारतीय नाविकों की सुरक्षा का मुद्दा उठाया था।
लगातार हो रही घटनाओं ने यह संकेत दिया है कि काला सागर का समुद्री मार्ग अब नागरिक मालवाहक जहाजों के लिए भी अत्यंत जोखिमपूर्ण बन चुका है।
व्यापारिक गतिविधियां जारी रहने के बावजूद चोर्नोमोर्स्क और ओडेसा जैसे बंदरगाह बार-बार सैन्य हमलों की जद में आ रहे हैं, जिसके कारण अनेक चालक दल लंबे समय तक जहाजों पर ही फंसे रहने को विवश हैं।
इन परिस्थितियों को देखते हुए विदेश मंत्रालय पहले ही भारतीय नागरिकों को आगाह कर चुका है कि काला सागर क्षेत्र में संचालित या वहां से गुजरने वाले व्यापारी जहाजों पर नियुक्ति स्वीकार करने से पहले सुरक्षा हालात का गंभीरता से आकलन करें।
मंत्रालय ने स्पष्ट किया है कि नागरिक जहाज भी मौजूदा युद्ध के दौरान हमलों से अछूते नहीं हैं.
