CBI Arrests Two Brothers in Chandranath Rath Murder Case, Alleges They Orchestrated Killing
Fresh arrests have marked a significant breakthrough in the Central Bureau of Investigation’s probe into the murder of Chandranath Rath, a close aide of senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari.
The agency on Friday took into custody two brothers, alleging they played a central role in planning and facilitating the high-profile assassination.
Those arrested have been identified as Sagar Sonkar and Sahib Sonkar. According to investigators, both were associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party and had been working as members of Rath’s team before the killing.
Officials connected with the investigation alleged that the duo was actively involved in every crucial stage of the conspiracy.
The agency claims they arranged the hired gunmen, coordinated logistical support and assisted in reconnaissance of the target before the attack was carried out.
Investigators further suspect that the conspiracy was executed at the alleged instance of a functionary linked to a rival political outfit.
The CBI is examining the wider network believed to be behind the murder.
Chandranath Rath, a 41-year-old former Indian Air Force personnel, was gunned down at point-blank range inside his SUV on May 6 while he was returning to his residence in Madhyamgram in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district.
The sensational murder occurred barely two days after the declaration of the West Bengal Assembly election results, sending shockwaves through political circles and triggering serious security concerns.
Initially, the investigation was handled by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the West Bengal Police.
However, considering the gravity and sensitivity of the case, the probe was subsequently handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation.
According to agency officials, the two accused were first detained for detailed interrogation before being formally arrested.
They were produced before a court on Friday, which remanded both men to seven days of CBI custody for further questioning.
Reacting to the arrests, West Bengal BJP spokesperson Debjit Sarkar described the development as unfortunate and said the law should be allowed to take its own course.
With the latest arrests, the total number of accused taken into custody in the case has risen to nine.
Investigators said the list includes six alleged shooters and three intermediaries who are believed to have facilitated the execution of the murder plot.
The six alleged gunmen have been identified as Monu Singh, Raj Singh, Golu Singh, Mayank Raj Mishra, Vickey Maurya and Naveen Kumar Singh.
The agency has also named Vinay Rai, Sanjay Rai and Vikas Mishra as the alleged middlemen who are accused of securing the contract for the killing.
Investigators are also examining the alleged communication trail of Sagar Sonkar.
According to information cited by PTI, the CBI is analysing multiple telephone conversations between him and the office of a rival political party in an effort to identify the individual with whom he was allegedly in regular contact.
The agency is also looking into Sagar’s political background. Preliminary findings reportedly indicate that he had earlier worked with an MLA belonging to the rival party before joining the BJP in 2020.
Officials told PTI that scrutiny of Sagar’s call detail records revealed repeated communication with the local office of the rival political party, a development that has become an important aspect of the ongoing investigation.
The CBI is also probing evidence suggesting that the alleged conspiracy to eliminate Rath—who was regarded as a key strategist in Suvendu Adhikari’s election campaign in Kolkata’s Bhabanipur ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly polls—had been under preparation since December 2025.
Investigators believe the plan underwent several changes before it was finally executed.
चंद्रनाथ रथ हत्याकांड में सीबीआई की बड़ी कार्रवाई, हत्या की साजिश रचने के आरोप में दो भाई गिरफ्तार
चंद्रनाथ रथ हत्याकांड की जांच में केंद्रीय अन्वेषण ब्यूरो (सीबीआई) को बड़ी सफलता मिली है। एजेंसी ने शुक्रवार को दो सगे भाइयों को गिरफ्तार करते हुए आरोप लगाया कि उन्होंने इस चर्चित हत्या की साजिश रचने और उसे अंजाम तक पहुंचाने में अहम भूमिका निभाई थी।
गिरफ्तार किए गए आरोपियों की पहचान सागर सोनकर और साहिब सोनकर के रूप में हुई है। जांच एजेंसी के अनुसार दोनों भारतीय जनता पार्टी से जुड़े कार्यकर्ता थे और चंद्रनाथ रथ की टीम के साथ काम कर रहे थे।
सीबीआई का दावा है कि दोनों भाइयों ने कथित षड्यंत्र की पूरी रूपरेखा तैयार करने में सक्रिय भूमिका निभाई। एजेंसी के मुताबिक इन्होंने शूटरों की व्यवस्था की, उनके लिए आवश्यक संसाधन उपलब्ध कराए तथा वारदात से पहले लक्ष्य की रेकी कराने में भी सहयोग किया।
जांच अधिकारियों का यह भी आरोप है कि पूरी साजिश एक प्रतिद्वंद्वी राजनीतिक दल से जुड़े नेता के इशारे पर रची गई। एजेंसी अब इस कथित षड्यंत्र से जुड़े अन्य लोगों की भूमिका की भी पड़ताल कर रही है।
41 वर्षीय चंद्रनाथ रथ, जो भारतीय वायुसेना के पूर्व कर्मी भी रह चुके थे, की 6 मई को उस समय नजदीक से गोली मारकर हत्या कर दी गई थी, जब वह उत्तर 24 परगना जिले के मध्यग्राम स्थित अपने घर लौट रहे थे। हमलावरों ने उनकी एसयूवी के भीतर ही उन पर ताबड़तोड़ गोलियां चलाई थीं।
यह सनसनीखेज वारदात पश्चिम बंगाल विधानसभा चुनाव परिणाम घोषित होने के महज 48 घंटे बाद हुई थी, जिससे राजनीतिक हलकों के साथ-साथ सुरक्षा एजेंसियों में भी गंभीर चिंता पैदा हो गई थी।
मामले की शुरुआती जांच पश्चिम बंगाल पुलिस की विशेष जांच टीम (एसआईटी) ने की थी। बाद में अपराध की गंभीरता और संवेदनशीलता को देखते हुए जांच का जिम्मा केंद्रीय अन्वेषण ब्यूरो को सौंप दिया गया।
सीबीआई अधिकारियों के अनुसार दोनों आरोपियों को पहले पूछताछ के लिए हिरासत में लिया गया और पर्याप्त साक्ष्य मिलने के बाद औपचारिक रूप से गिरफ्तार कर लिया गया। शुक्रवार को उन्हें अदालत में पेश किया गया, जहां से दोनों को सात दिन की सीबीआई रिमांड पर भेज दिया गया।
गिरफ्तारी पर प्रतिक्रिया देते हुए पश्चिम बंगाल भाजपा के प्रवक्ता देबजीत सरकार ने घटना को दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण बताते हुए कहा कि कानून अपना काम करेगा और जांच को निष्पक्ष तरीके से आगे बढ़ने दिया जाना चाहिए।
ताजा गिरफ्तारी के साथ इस मामले में अब तक कुल नौ लोगों को गिरफ्तार किया जा चुका है। इनमें छह कथित शूटर और तीन ऐसे व्यक्ति शामिल हैं, जिन पर हत्या की साजिश को अमलीजामा पहनाने में मध्यस्थ की भूमिका निभाने का आरोप है।
जांच एजेंसी ने जिन छह कथित शूटरों के नाम बताए हैं, उनमें मोनू सिंह, राज सिंह, गोलू सिंह, मयंक राज मिश्रा, विक्की मौर्य और नवीन कुमार सिंह शामिल हैं। वहीं विनय राय, संजय राय और विकास मिश्रा पर कथित तौर पर हत्या की सुपारी लेने और पूरी साजिश को आगे बढ़ाने का आरोप है।
सीबीआई अब सागर सोनकर के कथित संपर्कों की भी गहन जांच कर रही है। पीटीआई के अनुसार एजेंसी उसके और एक प्रतिद्वंद्वी राजनीतिक दल के स्थानीय कार्यालय के बीच हुई कई फोन कॉल की पड़ताल कर रही है ताकि यह पता लगाया जा सके कि वह किस व्यक्ति के संपर्क में था।
जांच में यह पहलू भी सामने आया है कि सागर सोनकर वर्ष 2020 में भाजपा में शामिल होने से पहले कथित रूप से प्रतिद्वंद्वी दल के एक विधायक के साथ काम कर चुका था। एजेंसी इस राजनीतिक पृष्ठभूमि को भी जांच के दायरे में रखे हुए है।
अधिकारियों के हवाले से पीटीआई ने बताया कि सागर के कॉल डिटेल रिकॉर्ड (सीडीआर) की जांच के दौरान प्रतिद्वंद्वी दल के स्थानीय कार्यालय से बार-बार संपर्क होने के संकेत मिले हैं, जिसे जांच में महत्वपूर्ण सुराग माना जा रहा है।
सीबीआई को प्रारंभिक जांच में ऐसे संकेत भी मिले हैं कि चंद्रनाथ रथ—जिन्हें वर्ष 2026 के पश्चिम बंगाल विधानसभा चुनाव से पहले कोलकाता के भवानीपुर क्षेत्र में सुवेंदु अधिकारी के चुनाव अभियान की प्रमुख रणनीतिक टीम का अहम सदस्य माना जाता था—की हत्या की कथित साजिश दिसंबर 2025 से ही तैयार की जा रही थी।
जांचकर्ताओं का मानना है कि विभिन्न कारणों से इस योजना में कई बार बदलाव किए गए, जिसके बाद अंततः वारदात को अंजाम दिया गया।
