Celebration Turns Into Tragedy in Prayagraj: Man Dies After Family Dispute During Brother’s Tilak Ceremony

What was meant to be a joyful family celebration in a village of Prayagraj district turned into a heartbreaking tragedy after a dispute during a tilak ceremony allegedly escalated into violence and emotional distress, ultimately leading to the death of a young man.

The incident took place in the Korari hamlet of Babandhar Gram Panchayat under the Bara police station area.

According to police and family members, 25-year-old Sugriv Bind, a resident of Korari village, died on Saturday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Jasra after allegedly consuming a poisonous substance following a dispute involving his in-laws.

Sugriv’s younger brother Rajkumar’s tilak ceremony was being held on Friday night. Relatives from the bride’s side had arrived from Harra Jari village under Kaundhiyara police station limits to participate in the ceremony.

Family members said that after the tilak rituals, an argument broke out over songs being played on the DJ system during the celebration.

The dispute allegedly involved Sugriv and some of his brothers-in-law and other relatives from his wife’s side.

According to allegations made by the family, the disagreement soon turned violent, and Sugriv was allegedly assaulted by his in-laws before they returned to their village in the Bara area.

Relatives further alleged that on Saturday morning, several members from the in-laws’ side again came to the village and assaulted him once more.

The family claimed that Sugriv became deeply disturbed not only because of the alleged assault but also due to his wife’s behaviour during the confrontation. Emotionally shattered, he allegedly consumed poison during the altercation.

As his condition deteriorated, panic spread through the family. He was rushed to a private hospital in Jasra, where doctors tried to save him. However, he died during treatment on Saturday afternoon.

The news of his death turned the atmosphere of celebration into mourning within hours.

Crying relatives later brought his body to Bara, where grief-stricken family members gathered in large numbers. Police subsequently sent the body to Prayagraj for post-mortem examination.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Ved Vyas Mishra said that based on a complaint filed by Sugriv’s father, a case has been registered against eight people, including the deceased’s wife, brother-in-law, father-in-law and mother-in-law. Legal action is currently underway.

Sugriv was the elder of two brothers and was considered the primary support for the family.

He earned a living by operating Pokland and JCB machines and was known among villagers as a hardworking young man who carried much of the household responsibility on his shoulders.

He had married Kavita Bind around three years ago. The couple also has a one-year-old son, who remains too young to understand the tragedy that has struck the family.

Villagers said the incident left the entire area in shock.

A house that had been filled with music and celebration during the tilak ceremony suddenly turned into a scene of grief and mourning after the elder brother’s death.

As anger spread among relatives and locals, family members staged a road blockade at Bara Tiraha on Saturday by placing Sugriv’s body on the road. The protesters demanded the immediate arrest of all accused persons.

The demonstration led to traffic disruption for nearly an hour.

After receiving information, ACP Ved Vyas Mishra reached the spot along with police personnel and tried to calm the agitated family members. Officials assured the protesters that arrests would be made soon and strict action would follow.

Following prolonged discussions and persuasion by the police, the family eventually ended the protest, after which the body was sent for post-mortem examination.
