Chamba Bus Tragedy: Seven Dead, 11 Hurt After Vehicle Crashes on Mountain Road
Eighteen people were travelling from Bairagarh towards Chamba when the private bus met with disaster near Chalunj Mor; police are examining possible mechanical failure
Himachal Pradesh: A morning journey from the remote Bairagarh area towards Chamba ended in tragedy on Saturday when a private bus carrying 18 people careered off a mountain road, killing seven passengers and leaving 11 others injured.
The accident happened at about 7.15 am near Chalunj Mor along the Bairagarh-Tissa route in Chamba district.
Police said the bus had been on the road for only around a quarter of an hour after leaving Bairagarh when the incident occurred.
The vehicle went out of control, overturned and descended the steep hillside, rolling repeatedly before coming to rest on a road located below.
The difficult terrain made the rescue operation particularly challenging.
Chamba Superintendent of Police Vijay Kumar Saklani said investigators were still trying to establish exactly what led to the crash.
A failure involving the vehicle’s axle is one of the possibilities being examined, although no definite cause has been established so far.
Police said statements from the survivors had not yet been recorded and would form an important part of the investigation.
Those who died were identified as Jagdev Sharma, 50, Des Raj, 35, Tej Singh, 30, Jagdeyi, 24, Hardei, 45, Neelam, 34, and driver Roop Singh, 35.
The victims belonged to different villages in the surrounding region.
The injured were identified as Sahil, 18, Sushmita, 32, Priyanka, 5, Harshu, 4, Panno Devi, 41, Kavya, 11, Dhani, 40, Dharma Devi, 62, Vijay Kumar and Arpit Mangal, 11.
Children among those injured
Several children were among the survivors, including five-year-old Priyanka, four-year-old Harshu and 11-year-olds Kavya and Arpit Mangal.
The injured were initially taken to the government healthcare facility at Tissa.
Following emergency treatment there, they were moved to Government Medical College and Hospital in Chamba for continued medical care.
The crash took place in the Churah Valley, an isolated mountainous region where road travel can be particularly hazardous.
The approximately 27-km Bairagarh-Tissa stretch includes narrow sections, sharp turns and substantial drops along the hillside.
It also serves as an important route towards Sach Pass.
PM, Himachal CM mourn deaths
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and conveyed his sympathies to the families of the victims.
He also wished those injured in the accident a speedy recovery.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu also expressed grief over the incident and directed the district administration to ensure that the injured received prompt hospital care and all necessary treatment.
The crash occurred shortly after the conclusion of Chamba’s Minjar Fair, which officially ended on August 2.
Although the festival has concluded, travel between Chamba and various parts of the district remains active.
The investigation into the accident is continuing, with police examining the condition of the bus and other circumstances surrounding the crash before determining the precise cause.

बैरागढ़ से चंबा जा रही बस में चालक समेत 18 लोग थे सवार; चैलुंज मोड़ के पास हादसा, तकनीकी खराबी की आशंका
चंबा: हिमाचल प्रदेश के चंबा जिले में शनिवार सुबह एक निजी बस के दुर्घटनाग्रस्त होने से सात लोगों की मौत हो गई और 11 अन्य घायल हो गए।
हादसे के समय बस में चालक समेत 18 लोग सवार थे और यह बैरागढ़ से चंबा की ओर जा रही थी।
दुर्घटना सुबह करीब 7.15 बजे बैरागढ़-तिस्सा मार्ग पर चैलुंज मोड़ के समीप हुई। पुलिस के अनुसार, बैरागढ़ से निकलने के लगभग 15 मिनट बाद ही बस हादसे का शिकार हो गई।
बताया गया है कि वाहन नियंत्रण से बाहर होकर पलट गया और पहाड़ी की ढलान पर नीचे की ओर लुढ़कता चला गया।
कई बार पलटने के बाद बस नीचे स्थित एक अन्य सड़क पर जाकर रुकी।
चंबा के पुलिस अधीक्षक विजय कुमार सकलानी ने बताया कि दुर्घटना की वजह अभी तय नहीं हुई है। शुरुआती जांच में वाहन में तकनीकी खराबी की संभावना भी सामने आई है।
पुलिस इस बात की जांच कर रही है कि कहीं बस का एक्सल टूटने के कारण चालक ने नियंत्रण तो नहीं खोया।
एसपी ने कहा कि हादसे में बचे लोगों के बयान अभी दर्ज नहीं किए गए हैं। उनके बयान मिलने और अन्य साक्ष्यों की जांच के बाद दुर्घटना के कारणों के बारे में स्थिति स्पष्ट हो सकेगी।
पुलिस के अनुसार मृतकों की पहचान जगदेव शर्मा (50), देस राज (35), तेज सिंह (30), जगदेयी (24), हरदेई (45), नीलम (34) और चालक रूप सिंह (35) के रूप में हुई है। ये सभी क्षेत्र के अलग-अलग गांवों के निवासी थे।
घायलों में साहिल (18), सुष्मिता (32), प्रियंका (5), हर्षु (4), पन्नो देवी (41), काव्या (11), धानी (40), धर्मा देवी (62), विजय कुमार और अर्पित मंगल (11) शामिल हैं।
हादसे में कई बच्चे भी घायल
दुर्घटना में कई बच्चे भी घायल हुए हैं। इनमें पांच वर्षीय प्रियंका, चार वर्षीय हर्षु तथा 11 वर्षीय काव्या और अर्पित मंगल शामिल हैं।
घायलों को दुर्घटना के बाद तिस्सा के सरकारी अस्पताल पहुंचाया गया। वहां प्रारंभिक चिकित्सा मिलने के बाद उन्हें आगे के उपचार के लिए चंबा स्थित सरकारी मेडिकल कॉलेज एवं अस्पताल भेजा गया।
यह हादसा चुराह घाटी के दुर्गम इलाके में हुआ, जहां पहाड़ी भूभाग के कारण सड़क यातायात चुनौतीपूर्ण रहता है।
बैरागढ़-तिस्सा मार्ग का करीब 27 किलोमीटर हिस्सा संकरी सड़क, तीखे मोड़ों और गहरी ढलानों वाले क्षेत्र से गुजरता है।
यह मार्ग ऊंचाई पर स्थित सच पास की ओर जाने वाले रास्तों में भी महत्वपूर्ण है।
पीएम मोदी और सीएम सुक्खू ने जताया दुख
प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने दुर्घटना में हुई मौतों पर दुख जताते हुए पीड़ित परिवारों के प्रति संवेदना व्यक्त की। उन्होंने घायलों के जल्द स्वस्थ होने की कामना भी की।
हिमाचल प्रदेश के मुख्यमंत्री सुखविंदर सिंह सुक्खू ने भी हादसे पर शोक जताया और मृतकों के परिजनों के प्रति संवेदना व्यक्त की।
उन्होंने जिला प्रशासन को घायलों को तत्काल चिकित्सा सुविधा उपलब्ध कराने तथा उनके उपचार के लिए जरूरी इंतजाम करने के निर्देश दिए।
चंबा में आयोजित मिनजर मेले के समाप्त होने के कुछ दिनों बाद यह हादसा हुआ है।
मेले का आधिकारिक समापन 2 अगस्त को हो चुका है, लेकिन जिले के विभिन्न इलाकों से चंबा की ओर लोगों की आवाजाही अभी जारी है।
पुलिस अब दुर्घटनाग्रस्त बस की तकनीकी स्थिति समेत हादसे से जुड़े अन्य पहलुओं की जांच कर रही है।
जांच पूरी होने के बाद ही दुर्घटना की वास्तविक वजह सामने आएगी।
