Chhattisgarh Boiler Explosion: 9 Workers Dead, 15 Injured at Vedanta Power Plant; Probe Ordered Amid Rising Industrial Safety Concerns

Chhattisgarh (Sakti): In a tragic industrial accident, nine workers lost their lives, and at least fifteen others were injured after a boiler exploded at a power plant operated by Vedanta Limited in Chhattisgarh’s Sakti district on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident occurred at the company’s facility located in Singhitarai village, triggering panic and chaos at the site.

According to preliminary information provided by Sakti Superintendent of Police Prafull Thakur, the blast took place in a boiler tube unit during routine operations.

Three workers died on the spot due to the intensity of the explosion, while several others succumbed to their injuries during treatment at hospitals in neighbouring Raigarh district.

Rescue teams, police personnel, and local administration officials rushed to the site immediately after receiving information about the explosion.

Authorities said emergency operations were launched promptly to evacuate injured workers and check whether any additional personnel were trapped under debris.

Injured Workers Undergoing Treatment in Raigarh Hospitals

Officials confirmed that the injured workers were shifted to medical facilities in the nearby Raigarh district, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Some of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.

The management of the Vedanta power plant issued a statement confirming that the accident occurred in one of the boiler units operated and maintained by its sub-contractor, NTPC GE Power Services Limited.

The company said it has initiated a detailed investigation in coordination with relevant authorities to determine the cause of the blast.

The statement further emphasised that the company’s immediate priority is to ensure the best possible medical care and support for the injured workers and the families of the deceased.

Probe Ordered, Government Promises Action

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai described the incident as “extremely tragic” and assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted.

He stated that strict action would be taken against those found responsible for any negligence or violation of safety norms.

The district administration has also begun collecting technical evidence to determine whether the explosion was caused by equipment failure, human error, or lapses in safety protocols.

Opposition Alleges Negligence, Demands Compensation

Chhattisgarh Congress president Deepak Baij termed the incident “deeply painful” and alleged that negligence on the part of plant management and authorities may have contributed to the accident.

Criticising the government, he demanded compensation of ₹1 crore each for the families of the deceased workers and ₹50 lakh for those injured.

The incident has once again raised concerns regarding industrial safety standards and compliance with operational protocols in factories and power plants.

Similar Tragedy in Gujarat Raises Safety Concerns

The Chhattisgarh accident comes just days after another deadly explosion in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district, where 21 people were killed and six others injured in a blast at a firecracker storage facility located on Dhunva Road in Deesa town.

Officials later revealed that the factory was operating illegally and lacked mandatory safety clearances.

The licence renewal application submitted in December last year had reportedly been rejected after inspection authorities found serious deficiencies in safety measures.

According to Banaskantha district officials, most of the deceased workers in the Gujarat incident were residents of Harda and Dewas districts of Madhya Pradesh.

Authorities said the blast occurred at a godown where firecrackers were stored, triggering a massive fire and causing the roof to collapse on workers present inside the facility.

Compensation Announced in Gujarat Incident

Following the Gujarat explosion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the bereaved families and announced financial assistance of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each deceased victim and ₹50,000 for the injured.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel had also announced an additional ex gratia compensation of ₹4 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured persons.

Rising Concern Over Industrial Safety Standards

Back-to-back industrial accidents in different states have sparked fresh concerns regarding the enforcement of safety regulations at factories, power plants, and storage facilities.

Experts say regular inspections, strict compliance with safety protocols, and accountability mechanisms are essential to prevent such tragic incidents.

Authorities in Chhattisgarh have stated that the investigation will examine all technical and administrative aspects related to the boiler explosion. Further action will be taken once the cause of the accident is established.

As rescue and medical operations continue, the focus remains on providing relief to affected families and ensuring stronger safeguards to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
