Controversial dance scene to be removed from Vicky Kaushal-starrer ‘Chhaava
Filmmaker Laxman Utekar announced on Monday that a controversial dance scene featuring the traditional Maharashtrian musical instrument “lezim” will be removed from his upcoming historical movie Chhaava. The film, based on the life of the Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, has been facing criticism from political figures and history enthusiasts for allegedly misrepresenting the revered historical figure.
The decision to delete the scene was made after Utekar held a meeting with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray at the latter’s residence earlier in the day. During the discussion, Thackeray reportedly shared his insights and provided suggestions to ensure historical accuracy and sensitivity in the portrayal of Maratha history.
The film’s trailer, released earlier this week, features a sequence in which actors Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, portraying Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Maharani Yesubai respectively, are shown dancing with the “Azim.” The traditional musical instrument holds cultural significance in Maharashtra and is often associated with folk performances. However, the inclusion of the dance sparked outrage on social media, with many viewers accusing the filmmakers of disrespecting the legacy of the historical figure. Politicians, including leaders from the Shiv Sena and other groups, also raised objections, demanding the removal of the scene.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Utekar said, “The discussion with Raj Thackeray was insightful and constructive. His deep understanding of history, especially related to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the Maratha empire, was extremely helpful. He offered valuable suggestions for making the portrayal more historically accurate. Based on his feedback and the concerns raised by the public, we have decided to remove the scene where Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj is seen playing the ‘Azim.’”
Utekar emphasized that the intention behind the film was never to hurt anyone’s sentiments. “This scene is not central to the story, and removing it does not affect the narrative of the film. If people feel that the portrayal is inaccurate or disrespectful, we are more than willing to make the necessary changes. Our objective has always been to honor and celebrate the greatness of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj,” he added.
The filmmaker further elaborated on the rigorous research that went into creating Chhaava, saying, “This film is the result of four years of extensive research conducted by our team. Our aim has always been to educate audiences and showcase the extraordinary contributions of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj as a valiant warrior and visionary king. If any part of the film undermines this goal or misrepresents his legacy, we have no hesitation in addressing those concerns.”
The controversy surrounding the lezim scene began shortly after the trailer’s release. Critics argued that the dance sequence was an inaccurate representation of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, who is regarded as a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and dignity. Social media platforms were flooded with posts condemning the filmmakers for what some called a “distortion of history.” Prominent political figures, including Maharashtra Minister and Shiv Sena leader Uday Samant, also demanded immediate corrective action to address public sentiments.
Welcoming the filmmaker’s decision, Uday Samant said, “The removal of the objectionable scene is a positive step. It shows that the filmmakers are willing to listen to public concerns and make changes in the interest of historical accuracy and respect for our heritage. I hope this decision will put an end to the controversy and allow audiences to focus on the larger message of the film.”
Laxman Utekar reiterated his commitment to presenting a respectful and authentic portrayal of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. “This film is a tribute to his extraordinary life and achievements. We need to convey his story with the dignity and respect it deserves. If any part of the film does not align with this vision, we will address it immediately,” he said.
Chhaava is set to hit theatres on February 14, with Vicky Kaushal in the lead role as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Rashmika Mandanna as Maharani Yesubai. The film aims to highlight the legacy of one of the most revered figures in Maratha history, focusing on his valor, leadership, and enduring contributions to the Maratha empire.
While the controversy surrounding the lezim scene has sparked debate, it has also brought heightened attention to the film and the story of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Many hope that the final version of the movie will stay true to historical facts while inspiring audiences with the tale of the great warrior-king.
