Cooper Connolly’s Unbeaten Century Goes in Vain as Sunrisers Hyderabad Defeat Punjab Kings by 33 Runs

A magnificent unbeaten century from Cooper Connolly was not enough to rescue Punjab Kings from a crushing 33-run defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday night.

Despite Connolly’s brilliant knock of 107 runs, Punjab suffered their third consecutive defeat as Hyderabad reclaimed the top spot in the points table with another commanding batting performance.

The victory also extended Hyderabad’s remarkable record of successfully defending scores above 220 for the 11th consecutive time.

It was additionally their ninth straight win over Punjab at this venue, surpassing Chennai’s previous record of eight consecutive wins against Bengaluru at Chepauk.

Batting first on a surface that offered almost no assistance to bowlers, Sunrisers Hyderabad posted a massive total of 235 for 4 in 20 overs, powered by explosive half-centuries from Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen.

After a rapid start from the opening pair, Hyderabad maintained their aggressive approach throughout the innings.

Abhishek Sharma smashed 35 runs off just 13 balls, while Travis Head hammered 38 off 19 deliveries, giving the side early momentum.

Abhishek attacked from the outset, hitting towering sixes off Marco Jansen and playing a fearless brand of cricket.

Hyderabad crossed the 50-run mark at lightning speed as Punjab’s bowlers struggled to find any rhythm.

After the dismissal of the openers, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen took complete control of the innings. The duo stitched together a superb 88-run partnership for the third wicket in just 48 balls.

Klaasen was at his destructive best, smashing 69 runs off 43 deliveries with a mixture of elegant strokeplay and raw power. Kishan contributed a fluent 55 off 32 balls before being dismissed.

Later in the innings, Klaasen added another crucial 63-run partnership with Nitish Kumar Reddy, who remained unbeaten on 29 from 13 balls and provided the finishing touches to Hyderabad’s imposing total.

Punjab’s bowling unit endured a difficult outing. Jansen conceded 61 runs in four overs, while Vijaykumar Vyshak gave away 54. Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, Lockie Ferguson and Vyshak picked up one wicket each.

Punjab’s fielding also proved costly, with the side dropping three catches during Hyderabad’s innings.

Chasing a daunting target of 236, Punjab Kings suffered an early collapse that virtually ended the contest within the powerplay.

Captain Shreyas Iyer and both openers were back in the pavilion with just 23 runs on the board. Pat Cummins dismissed Priyansh Arya in the very first over, while Prabhsimran Singh fell in the next over to Nitish Kumar Reddy.

Shreyas Iyer’s dismissal further deepened Punjab’s troubles as the top order crumbled under pressure.

Amid the collapse, young Australian batter Cooper Connolly stood tall and produced one of the finest innings of the season. Showing remarkable composure and maturity, the 22-year-old carried Punjab’s innings almost single-handedly.

Connolly remained unbeaten on 107 off just 59 balls, striking seven boundaries and eight sixes in a fearless counterattack. He kept Punjab alive in the chase despite wickets tumbling regularly at the other end.

Apart from Connolly, only Marcus Stoinis (28), Suryansh Shedge (25), and Jansen (19) made notable contributions.

Hyderabad’s bowling attack stayed disciplined despite the flat batting conditions. Cummins and Shivang Kumar picked up two wickets each, while Eshan Malinga, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Saqib Hussain claimed one wicket apiece.

Punjab eventually finished at 202 for 7, falling 33 runs short of the target.

Connolly’s century, however, created a major record in the tournament.

At 22 years and 257 days, he became the youngest overseas player in league history to score a century, surpassing the previous record held by Quinton de Kock, who had achieved the feat in 2016 at the age of 23 years and 122 days.

His eight sixes also became the highest number of sixes hit by a Punjab Kings batter in a single innings.

For Sunrisers Hyderabad, the victory further strengthened their reputation as one of the most dangerous batting sides in the tournament.

Their score of 235 for 4 became their highest first-innings total against Punjab and the second-highest overall score they have recorded against the franchise.

The team had earlier scored 247 for 4 against Punjab at the same venue last season while batting second, and had also successfully defended 219 in their previous match at Mullanpur.
