Chabahar Port figures prominently in bilateral discussions as Iran underscores close ties with New Delhi; US warns against sanctions evasion
NEW DELHI: Iran has described its relationship with India as “long-standing” and “historic” following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, highlighting the importance Tehran attaches to its ties with New Delhi.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said the relationship between the two countries extends across several areas, including trade and economic cooperation.
He indicated that the two sides continue to maintain consultations on issues of mutual interest, with the strategically important Chabahar Port featuring among the subjects discussed.
Baghaei made the comments during a press briefing while referring to the recent conversation between Modi and Pezeshkian.
He said Tehran considers India an important partner and pointed to the fact that New Delhi is part of both the SCO and BRICS.
According to the Iranian spokesperson, Chabahar remains an issue of significance for both sides.
He said discussions between India and Iran regularly cover matters connected with the port, while stressing that bilateral relations continue to move forward.
The remarks followed Modi’s meeting with Pezeshkian during the SCO gathering in Kyrgyzstan.
The Prime Minister’s Office said India reaffirmed its intention to deepen its established friendship with Iran across a range of sectors.
Modi also said the two leaders exchanged views on the regional situation.
According to his post on X, discussions included India’s backing for initiatives aimed at achieving durable peace amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.
The meeting has also attracted attention in Washington as tensions between the US and Iran continue.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, while speaking on The Brian Kilmeade Show, said he did not believe India and Iran were moving towards a trade agreement.
Rubio acknowledged that countries conduct their foreign policies independently and that governments around the world maintain communication with Tehran.
However, he reiterated the US position that countries should not assist Iran in circumventing American sanctions.
For New Delhi and Tehran, the Chabahar Port remains an important element in their bilateral engagement, according to Baghaei’s remarks.
Iran’s latest comments also underline its effort to characterise ties with India as rooted in a relationship that goes beyond immediate diplomatic or commercial interests.
India’s engagement with Iran comes within a wider diplomatic framework, with New Delhi maintaining membership of both the SCO and BRICS while pursuing relations with countries across competing geopolitical blocs.
The latest Modi-Pezeshkian interaction therefore brought bilateral cooperation, regional developments and the Chabahar issue together in a single high-level discussion.
While Tehran has stressed the depth and continuity of its relationship with New Delhi, Washington has simultaneously reiterated its concern over any steps that could help Iran bypass US sanctions.
The contrasting positions add a broader geopolitical dimension to the India-Iran engagement following the SCO meeting.

नई दिल्ली: प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी और ईरान के राष्ट्रपति मसूद पेजेशकियन की मुलाकात के कुछ दिनों बाद तेहरान ने भारत के साथ अपने संबंधों को “दीर्घकालिक”, “ऐतिहासिक” और “सभ्यतागत” करार दिया है।
ईरान ने कहा है कि दोनों देशों के बीच संबंध कई क्षेत्रों में लगातार आगे बढ़ रहे हैं और चाबहार बंदरगाह दोनों पक्षों के लिए महत्वपूर्ण मुद्दों में शामिल है।
ईरानी विदेश मंत्रालय के प्रवक्ता इस्माइल बघाई ने प्रेस ब्रीफिंग के दौरान मोदी और पेजेशकियन की हालिया बातचीत का उल्लेख किया।
उन्होंने कहा कि भारत के साथ ईरान के रिश्तों को तेहरान विशेष महत्व देता है और दोनों देशों के बीच व्यापार तथा आर्थिक सहयोग समेत कई क्षेत्रों में संबंध कायम हैं।
बघाई ने भारत की भूमिका का उल्लेख करते हुए कहा कि नई दिल्ली शंघाई सहयोग संगठन (SCO) और BRICS दोनों का सदस्य है।
उनके अनुसार, भारत उन देशों में शामिल है जिनके साथ ईरान के विभिन्न क्षेत्रों में अच्छे संबंध हैं।
चाबहार बंदरगाह को दोनों देशों के बीच नियमित बातचीत का महत्वपूर्ण हिस्सा बताते हुए ईरानी प्रवक्ता ने कहा कि भारत और ईरान के बीच होने वाले विचार-विमर्श में इससे जुड़े मुद्दे अक्सर सामने आते हैं। उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि भारत के साथ ईरान के संबंध लगातार विकसित हो रहे हैं।
यह बयान SCO शिखर सम्मेलन के दौरान हुई मोदी-पेजेशकियन बैठक के बाद आया है। किर्गिज़ गणराज्य में आयोजित सम्मेलन के इतर दोनों नेताओं की मुलाकात हुई थी।
प्रधानमंत्री कार्यालय के मुताबिक, भारत ने ईरान के साथ लंबे समय से चले आ रहे मैत्रीपूर्ण संबंधों को विभिन्न क्षेत्रों में और मजबूत करने की अपनी प्रतिबद्धता दोहराई।
प्रधानमंत्री मोदी ने बैठक के बाद क्षेत्रीय हालात को लेकर भी जानकारी साझा की थी।
सोशल मीडिया मंच X पर अपनी पोस्ट में उन्होंने बताया कि दोनों नेताओं ने क्षेत्र की स्थिति पर चर्चा की और अमेरिका तथा इजरायल से जुड़े संघर्ष के बीच स्थायी शांति सुनिश्चित करने के प्रयासों के प्रति भारत के समर्थन पर भी बात हुई।
भारत और ईरान की इस उच्चस्तरीय बातचीत पर अमेरिका की भी नजर रही।
अमेरिकी विदेश मंत्री मार्को रुबियो ने द ब्रायन किल्मीड शो को दिए एक इंटरव्यू में कहा कि उन्हें भारत और ईरान के बीच किसी व्यापार समझौते की उम्मीद नहीं है।
रुबियो ने यह भी माना कि दुनिया के अलग-अलग देश अपनी स्वतंत्र विदेश नीति के अनुसार ईरान के साथ बातचीत करते हैं। हालांकि, उन्होंने अमेरिकी रुख दोहराते हुए कहा कि किसी भी देश को ईरान को अमेरिकी प्रतिबंधों से बचने में मदद नहीं करनी चाहिए।
तेहरान के ताजा बयान में चाबहार बंदरगाह का विशेष उल्लेख भारत-ईरान संबंधों में इसके महत्व को रेखांकित करता है।
ईरान ने अपने बयान में दोनों देशों के रिश्तों को केवल मौजूदा व्यापारिक हितों तक सीमित नहीं बताया, बल्कि उन्हें लंबे ऐतिहासिक और सभ्यतागत जुड़ाव से जोड़ा।

तेहरान ने नई दिल्ली के साथ अपने रिश्तों की गहराई और निरंतरता पर जोर दिया है, जबकि वॉशिंगटन ने ईरान पर लगाए गए अमेरिकी प्रतिबंधों के संभावित उल्लंघन को लेकर अपनी चिंता स्पष्ट की है।
