Death Toll in Telangana Chemical Factory Explosion Rises to 35; Search Operations Continue Amid Nationwide Mourning

The devastating explosion that tore through a chemical manufacturing facility in Telangana’s Sangareddy district on Monday has claimed at least 35 lives, with officials warning that the toll may still rise as rescue and recovery efforts continue.

The incident, which occurred at the Sigachi Industries Limited pharmaceutical unit—approximately 50 kilometers from Hyderabad—has been described as one of the most severe industrial disasters in the state’s recent history.

Tragedy Strikes at Sigachi Industries

The deadly blast took place during the daytime on July 1, catching workers and staff off guard. According to preliminary reports, the explosion originated during a technical operation involving the air handling and drying of microcrystalline cellulose, a chemical compound commonly used in pharmaceutical production.

The high-intensity blast led to the immediate collapse of a three-storey building within the industrial complex and sparked a major fire that engulfed large sections of the facility.

As per officials from Telangana State Disaster Response and Fire Services, over 108 workers were on duty at the time of the explosion. Many of them were in or near the affected building, which collapsed under the impact.

While 35 workers have tragically lost their lives, another 35 sustained varying degrees of injuries, with at least 11 in critical condition receiving treatment at nearby hospitals.

Most of the victims are believed to be migrant laborers from the states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha, who had travelled to Telangana in search of livelihood opportunities.

Massive Emergency Response

The response to the incident was swift and large-scale. More than 15 fire engines from across the region were deployed to the scene to control and extinguish the fire that erupted following the explosion.

Despite firefighters’ best efforts, the blaze raged for several hours due to the presence of highly flammable substances within the facility.

A team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was also dispatched to the site and continues to assist state authorities in search, rescue, and recovery operations. Specialized equipment is being used to search through the debris for any survivors or remains.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed the deployment of NDRF personnel via a statement on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). “Saddened by the tragic accident in a chemical factory in Sangareddy, Telangana.

The NDRF team rushed to the spot immediately and is continuing the rescue operation along with the local administration,” Shah posted.

National Leaders Express Condolences

The incident has drawn nationwide attention, with leaders across the political spectrum expressing grief and solidarity with the affected families.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his sorrow over the loss of lives and announced financial assistance through the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

An ex gratia amount of ₹2 lakh has been sanctioned for the families of those who died in the tragedy, while ₹50,000 will be provided to those injured.

“This is a deeply saddening incident,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement. “We stand with the bereaved families in this moment of grief and will ensure support for the injured.”

Investigation and Accountability

In the wake of the tragedy, the Telangana state government has taken prompt action to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the causes and circumstances surrounding the explosion.

A high-powered committee has been constituted to probe the incident thoroughly. The committee includes top state officials: the Chief Secretary, the Special Chief Secretary (Disaster Management), the Principal Secretaries of Labour and Health, and the Additional Director General of Police (Fire Services).

This panel has been tasked not only with determining the technical reasons behind the explosion but also with examining whether there were any lapses in safety protocols, regulatory compliance, or negligence on the part of the factory management.

The committee is expected to submit its findings in a time-bound manner.

According to Y Nagi Reddy, Director General of Telangana State Disaster Response and Fire Services, inputs from industry experts indicate that the explosion occurred during the drying and air-handling process involving microcrystalline cellulose.

While investigations are still underway, questions are being raised about the adherence to chemical safety norms and industrial risk management practices at the facility.

Focus on Preventing Future Disasters

The Telangana Chief Minister’s Office has stated that in addition to probing the cause of the incident, the high-level committee will also formulate recommendations to strengthen industrial safety standards across the state.

This may include revising safety regulations, improving factory inspection mechanisms, and enhancing emergency preparedness protocols in high-risk industrial zones.

The broader objective, according to the government, is to prevent the recurrence of such catastrophic accidents and to ensure that all chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing units are strictly regulated and monitored for safety compliance.

Community in Mourning

The explosion has left the local community in Sangareddy in deep mourning. Relatives of workers have gathered at the site and hospitals, searching for news of their loved ones. The district administration is providing support and counseling to the bereaved families and has promised to expedite compensation and relief measures.

As the nation grieves the loss of lives in this industrial disaster, the tragedy has once again brought to light the urgent need for robust safety oversight and worker protection measures in India’s rapidly growing pharmaceutical and chemical industries.

The coming days will be crucial as authorities work to complete rescue operations, finalize the investigation, and ensure accountability, while families begin the painful process of coping with their loss.
