Delhi Metro returns cash and other valuables to travellers who left these things in trains to owners in 2024
In 2024, commuters traveling on the Delhi Metro left behind a variety of items, including cash amounting to over ₹40 lakh, 89 laptops, 193 mobile phones, and nine mangalsutras, among others. These items were recovered and returned to their rightful owners by personnel from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) after proper verification.
The CISF, which provides counter-terrorism security to the extensive public transport system covering more than 250 stations and 350 km of track in the National Capital Region (NCR), found many of these items near X-ray baggage scanners at metro stations.
According to official data accessed by PTI, the recovered items included ₹40.74 lakh in cash, 89 laptops, 40 watches, and 193 mobile phones. The CISF also retrieved silver ornaments, such as 13 pairs of anklets, as well as other pieces of jewelry like rings and bangles. Additionally, foreign currency totaling 24,550, comprising US dollars, Saudi riyals, and Thai baht, was found and returned during the year.
The data also revealed 59 suicide attempts on the Delhi Metro network in 2024, of which 23 individuals lost their lives, three were rescued, and 33 sustained injuries.
During routine security checks, CISF personnel detected 75 live ammunition rounds and seven firearms in passengers’ possession.
Demonstrating their commitment to public welfare, CISF personnel also assisted 262 children traveling alone by reuniting them with their families, local police, or child helpline volunteers. Similarly, they helped 671 women passengers in distress over the same period.
The CISF, with a deployment of 13,000 personnel, including both men and women, ensures the security of the Delhi Metro network. Lakhs of commuters rely on the metro daily to travel across Delhi and its neighboring cities, including Noida and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, and Gurugram and Faridabad in Haryana.
