Rohit Shetty: How a Stuntman’s Eye Changed the Grammar of Bollywood Blockbusters

Rohit Shetty: From Stunt Work to Bollywood’s High-Voltage Blockbuster Formula
From working behind the camera as a teenager to creating the Cop Universe, Shetty has built a filmmaking identity around spectacle, action and mass entertainment.

MUMBAI: Long before Rohit Shetty became one of Hindi cinema’s most recognisable commercial filmmakers, he had already learned one of its toughest lessons from the ground up: an action scene is not simply something to be filmed—it has to work physically.

That early familiarity with stunt work has remained an important part of Shetty’s filmmaking identity.

His films are frequently associated with airborne cars, large-scale crashes, elaborate set pieces and exaggerated action, but behind the spectacle lies a filmmaker who began his career close to the technical side of movie production.

Cinema was part of Shetty’s family environment from the beginning. His father, M.B. Shetty, was known in the Hindi film industry as “Fighter Shetty” and worked as both an actor and stunt professional.

His mother, Ratna Shetty, also worked in the stunt world and served as a body double for actresses, including Hema Malini.

For Shetty, therefore, the physical risks associated with filmmaking were not an abstract concept.

He grew up seeing the demanding reality of stunt work and later entered the industry himself at a very young age.

The death of his father brought financial difficulties to the family and forced Shetty to begin earning early.

At 17, he entered filmmaking as an assistant director, gradually gaining exposure to the different technical processes involved in putting a film together.

That experience proved important when he moved towards directing.

His background in stunt work gave him an instinct for what could actually be executed on a set, particularly when scenes involved vehicles, physical movement and carefully coordinated action.

It also helped shape the visual signature that audiences came to associate with his films.

Shetty’s action sequences tend to favour physical spectacle and elaborate choreography, often turning cars and other vehicles into central elements of the scene.

But action alone does not explain his commercial appeal.

Shetty has repeatedly demonstrated an ability to move between genres while retaining a recognisable mass-market style.

The Golmaal films established him as a major force in comedy, while his police dramas expanded his reputation as a director of large-scale action entertainers.

His most ambitious piece of franchise-building came through the interconnected police films commonly known as the Cop Universe.

Beginning with Singham, the franchise expanded through Simmba and Sooryavanshi, eventually bringing characters and storylines together in Singham Again.

The idea gave Shetty something larger than a series of individual films: a recurring cinematic world in which characters could cross between stories and audiences could follow an expanding group of police protagonists.

That franchise-building approach became another defining feature of his career.

Rather than relying solely on the appeal of individual stars or isolated films, Shetty developed a recognisable ecosystem of characters and recurring themes.

His television career has reinforced the same association with physical challenges.

Since 2014, he has hosted Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi, where contestants are put through demanding stunts and fear-based challenges.

His presence on the show has extended his screen persona beyond filmmaking.

The programme has allowed viewers to see him in a role that combines task supervision, encouragement and a strong emphasis on the execution of dangerous challenges.

Yet the larger-than-life image surrounding Shetty’s cinema contrasts with the discipline required to produce such sequences.

Complex action involving vehicles, performers and specialised equipment leaves little room for improvisation when safety is involved.

Shetty’s own experience in stunt work has therefore remained relevant not simply as a career footnote, but as part of the way he approaches action filmmaking.

His rise also reflects a distinctly Indian route to commercial success: learning the craft through the industry’s technical departments, moving gradually into direction and eventually building a recognisable brand around films designed for mass audiences.

Today, Shetty’s name is closely associated with a particular kind of Hindi commercial cinema—high-energy action, broad humour, familiar characters and visual excess.

Whether behind a camera or in front of one on television, he has turned the practical knowledge acquired during his early years into a filmmaking vocabulary that audiences can identify almost instantly.

His journey from a teenager entering the industry for financial necessity to a director with a major interconnected franchise is therefore less a story of overnight stardom than one of gradual accumulation—of technical knowledge, commercial instinct and an unusually clear understanding of what makes spectacle work on screen.
