Delhi Murder Case Solved After 29 Years: Crime Branch Arrests Fugitive from Lucknow for 1997 Killing
Nearly three decades after a brutal murder in West Delhi remained unsolved, the Delhi Police Crime Branch has finally tracked down and arrested the prime accused.
The 48-year-old suspect, Mohammad Fahim, had been on the run for more than 29 years after allegedly murdering a man over a financial dispute in Delhi’s Raghubir Nagar.
He was apprehended in Lucknow following a sustained intelligence-based operation carried out by the Crime Branch.
According to investigators, Fahim managed to evade arrest for years by frequently shifting between different locations in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.
To avoid being identified, he reportedly lived under the assumed identity of “Ali Bhai” and earned his livelihood as a plaster of Paris (PoP) artisan.
Officials said his constant movement and use of a false identity made it extremely difficult for law enforcement agencies to trace him.
Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) HGS Dhaliwal described the investigation as one of the most challenging cold murder cases handled by the Delhi Police.
He said the crime took place long before the era of digital databases, mobile surveillance, and modern forensic technology.
Investigators also had no recent photographs or reliable identification records of the accused, making the search even more complicated.
The case dates back to March 14, 1997, when police recovered the body of an unidentified man from inside a wooden storage box built into a bed at a house in TC Camp, Raghubir Nagar.
Residents had alerted the police after learning about the suspected murder. A case was subsequently registered at Rajouri Garden Police Station.
During the investigation, the deceased was identified as Sharif Hasan Khan, a 58-year-old resident of Faizabad district in Uttar Pradesh, now known as Ayodhya.
Police said Khan worked as a salesman at a garment shop in Rajouri Garden and had known Fahim, as both lived in the same locality. Fahim had reportedly arrived in Delhi a few months before the incident in search of employment.
Investigators found that on March 13, 1997, an argument broke out between the two men after Fahim allegedly stole Khan’s money.
The dispute soon turned violent. Police alleged that Fahim repeatedly struck Khan with an iron rod before strangling him with a rope.
After the killing, he allegedly hid the body inside a wooden bed box and fled the city to avoid arrest.
As Fahim remained untraceable, a Delhi court declared him a proclaimed offender on October 14, 1997.
Despite repeated efforts over the years, investigators were unable to locate him, allowing the case to remain unresolved for nearly three decades.
Police said the investigation gained fresh momentum after the case was recently assigned to the Central Range team of the Crime Branch under Inspector Sunil Kumar Kalakhande.
Officers gathered fresh intelligence by visiting Fahim’s native village, where they learned that he was still alive and occasionally returned to meet family members.
During the renewed probe, investigators obtained Fahim’s latest mobile phone number and placed it under technical surveillance.
Electronic tracking eventually confirmed his presence in Lucknow. Acting on the inputs, a Crime Branch team conducted a raid in the Thakurganj area on July 3, leading to his arrest without incident.
During interrogation, Fahim allegedly admitted to murdering Sharif Hasan Khan over the financial dispute.
Police said that after committing the crime, he initially escaped to Nagpur before moving between several cities, including Mumbai and Lucknow.
Throughout those years, he allegedly concealed his identity by using the name “Ali Bhai”, enabling him to remain outside the reach of law enforcement for almost 30 years.

48 वर्षीय मोहम्मद फहीम पर रघुबीर नगर में पैसों के विवाद के चलते एक व्यक्ति की हत्या करने का आरोप है। लंबी तलाश के बाद अपराध शाखा की टीम ने उसे लखनऊ से गिरफ्तार कर लिया।
जांच अधिकारियों के अनुसार, गिरफ्तारी से बचने के लिए फहीम लगातार उत्तर प्रदेश और महाराष्ट्र के अलग-अलग शहरों में अपना ठिकाना बदलता रहा।
उसने अपनी असली पहचान छिपाने के लिए “अली भाई” नाम अपनाया और प्लास्टर ऑफ पेरिस (पीओपी) कारीगर के रूप में काम करके जीविका चलाता रहा।
पुलिस का कहना है कि बार-बार स्थान बदलने और फर्जी पहचान का इस्तेमाल करने के कारण उसे पकड़ना बेहद चुनौतीपूर्ण हो गया था।
विशेष पुलिस आयुक्त (अपराध) एचजीएस ढालीवाल ने बताया कि यह मामला दिल्ली पुलिस के लिए सबसे कठिन पुराने हत्या मामलों में से एक था।
घटना उस दौर की थी, जब न तो डिजिटल डाटाबेस उपलब्ध थे और न ही आधुनिक तकनीकी जांच, मोबाइल सर्विलांस या उन्नत फोरेंसिक संसाधन।
आरोपी की हालिया तस्वीर या विश्वसनीय पहचान संबंधी रिकॉर्ड भी उपलब्ध नहीं थे, जिससे जांच और अधिक जटिल हो गई।
यह मामला 14 मार्च 1997 का है, जब रघुबीर नगर स्थित टीसी कैंप के एक कमरे में लकड़ी के पलंग के बॉक्स के अंदर एक व्यक्ति का शव बरामद हुआ था।
स्थानीय लोगों द्वारा हत्या की सूचना दिए जाने के बाद पुलिस मौके पर पहुंची और राजौरी गार्डन थाने में हत्या का मामला दर्ज किया गया।
बाद की जांच में मृतक की पहचान उत्तर प्रदेश के तत्कालीन फैजाबाद, वर्तमान अयोध्या जिले के निवासी शरीफ हसन खान के रूप में हुई।
उनकी उम्र 58 वर्ष थी और वे राजौरी गार्डन स्थित एक रेडीमेड कपड़ों की दुकान में सेल्समैन के रूप में कार्यरत थे।
पुलिस के मुताबिक, खान और फहीम एक-दूसरे को पहले से जानते थे क्योंकि दोनों एक ही इलाके में रहते थे। फहीम घटना से कुछ महीने पहले रोजगार की तलाश में दिल्ली आया था।
जांच के दौरान पता चला कि 13 मार्च 1997 को दोनों के बीच कथित रूप से पैसों की चोरी को लेकर विवाद हुआ था। पुलिस का आरोप है कि बहस बढ़ने पर फहीम ने लोहे की रॉड से कई बार हमला किया और बाद में रस्सी से गला घोंटकर शरीफ हसन खान की हत्या कर दी।
इसके बाद उसने शव को लकड़ी के पलंग के बॉक्स में छिपाया और मौके से फरार हो गया।
आरोपी के लगातार फरार रहने पर दिल्ली की एक अदालत ने 14 अक्टूबर 1997 को उसे घोषित अपराधी (प्रोक्लेम्ड ऑफेंडर) घोषित कर दिया था। इसके बावजूद वर्षों तक उसके बारे में कोई ठोस सुराग नहीं मिल सका और मामला लगभग तीन दशकों तक अनसुलझा बना रहा।
हाल ही में यह जांच अपराध शाखा की सेंट्रल रेंज टीम को सौंपी गई, जिसकी अगुवाई इंस्पेक्टर सुनील कुमार कलाखंडे कर रहे थे।
टीम ने आरोपी के पैतृक गांव में डेरा डालकर स्थानीय स्तर पर सूचनाएं जुटाईं। जांच के दौरान यह पुष्टि हुई कि फहीम जीवित है और समय-समय पर अपने गांव भी आता-जाता है।
नई जांच के दौरान पुलिस ने आरोपी का ताजा मोबाइल नंबर हासिल कर उसे तकनीकी निगरानी पर रखा। इलेक्ट्रॉनिक सर्विलांस से उसकी लोकेशन लखनऊ में मिलने के बाद अपराध शाखा की टीम ने 3 जुलाई को ठाकुरगंज इलाके में छापा मारकर उसे गिरफ्तार कर लिया।
पूछताछ के दौरान पुलिस के अनुसार फहीम ने पैसों के विवाद में शरीफ हसन खान की हत्या करने की बात स्वीकार की।
जांच में यह भी सामने आया कि वारदात के बाद वह पहले नागपुर भागा और फिर मुंबई तथा लखनऊ सहित कई शहरों में अलग-अलग पहचान के साथ रहता रहा।
करीब तीन दशकों तक उसने “अली भाई” नाम का इस्तेमाल कर अपनी वास्तविक पहचान छिपाए रखी और पुलिस से बचता रहा।
