Donald Trump Pays $5.6 Million to E. Jean Carroll After US Supreme Court Clears Release of Damages

A long-running legal battle between US President Donald Trump and writer E. Jean Carroll reached another significant milestone after Carroll received more than $5.6 million in damages following a US Supreme Court decision that allowed a jury’s civil verdict against Trump to remain in force.

Court records and Carroll’s legal team confirmed that the payment has now been transferred to her.

Funds amounting to the original $5 million jury award, along with accrued interest, were released on Monday from an escrow account where the money had remained since the 2023 verdict.

According to the Associated Press, the amount had been deposited by Trump shortly after the jury ruled against him while he pursued appeals against the judgment.

Confirming the development on Tuesday, Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, said her client had successfully received the compensation awarded by the court.

Carroll later acknowledged the payment through a post on Substack, writing, “The eagle has landed.”

Despite the release of the money, Trump’s legal team has maintained that it will continue challenging the verdict through further appeals.

Judicial proceedings moved forward after the US Supreme Court declined to disturb the civil judgment, enabling Judge Lewis A. Kaplan to authorise the release of the escrowed funds.

Trump’s lawyers subsequently sought emergency relief to prevent the transfer, but the request was rejected.

Court filings indicate that no restrictions were placed on Carroll’s use of the compensation, and her attorneys informed the court that she intends to place the amount in a retirement account.

Even after the payment was made, Trump’s legal representatives filed another appeal seeking to suspend or overturn the order.

According to the jury’s findings, Trump sexually assaulted Carroll inside the dressing room of an upscale New York department store in 1996 and later defamed her after she publicly described the alleged incident in a memoir published in 2019 during Trump’s first presidential term.

Throughout the case, Trump consistently denied the allegations. Referring to Carroll, now 82 and a former advice columnist, he described her accusations as completely false and asserted that she was “not my type.”

Rejecting Carroll’s account, Trump also argued that he hardly knew her and dismissed a 1987 photograph showing both of them with their respective spouses at a social gathering as insignificant.

He further alleged that Carroll’s claims were politically motivated and aimed at boosting sales of her books.

Court proceedings continued in Trump’s absence, as he chose not to testify during the trial.

Carroll told jurors that what began as a friendly and flirtatious interaction inside the department store turned into a violent sexual assault.

Her lawsuit became possible after New York enacted legislation temporarily allowing survivors of historic sexual abuse to file civil claims even after the original legal deadline had expired.

Legal challenges between the two sides remain far from over.

Trump is separately contesting an $83 million defamation award granted to Carroll by another Manhattan jury following a 2024 trial, during which he briefly appeared in court to testify.

Carroll has publicly identified herself throughout the proceedings and has consented to being named in media reports.

अदालत के रिकॉर्ड और कैरोल के वकीलों ने इस भुगतान की पुष्टि की है।

यह राशि मूल 50 लाख डॉलर के जूरी पुरस्कार और उस पर जुड़े ब्याज को मिलाकर तैयार हुई है। एसोसिएटेड प्रेस की रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, सोमवार को यह धनराशि उस एस्क्रो खाते से जारी की गई, जहां 2023 के फैसले के बाद से इसे सुरक्षित रखा गया था।

बाद में, 2019 में कैरोल द्वारा अपने संस्मरण में इस घटना का उल्लेख किए जाने के बाद ट्रंप ने सार्वजनिक रूप से उनके खिलाफ कथित रूप से मानहानिकारक बयान दिए।
