Drunk SUV Driver Mows Down Pedestrians in Jaipur, Leaves 3 Dead and 6 Critically Injured
In a horrifying incident in Jaipur, a drunk SUV driver allegedly ran over multiple pedestrians and rammed into several vehicles across a seven-kilometer stretch on Monday night, resulting in three fatalities and leaving six others critically injured, police confirmed on Tuesday.
The driver, identified as 62-year-old Usman Khan from Rana Colony in Shastri Nagar, is said to be the owner of a factory producing iron beds in the Vishwakarma Industrial Area. Authorities confirmed that he was under the heavy influence of alcohol during the rampage.
The incident began on the city’s busy MI Road and continued through the narrow lanes under the jurisdiction of Nahargarh police station. The chaos started when Khan’s SUV struck a scooty near the Santosh Mata Temple. Instead of stopping, he allegedly kept driving erratically, running over fallen victims and colliding with more people and parked vehicles along the way.
Even police station property wasn’t spared—the SUV crashed into multiple vehicles parked outside the Nahargarh police station.
The rampage came to an end when the vehicle became stuck in a narrow lane. Locals and police quickly surrounded the car and managed to detain Khan on the spot.
Additional DCP (North) Bajrang Singh Shekhawat stated that most of the victims were hit within a 500-metre radius near the police station. A medical test later confirmed that Khan was heavily intoxicated at the time of the incident.
Those seriously injured have been identified as Virendra Singh (48), Mamta Kanwar (50), Monesh Soni (28), Mohammad Jalaluddin (44), Deepika Saini (17), Vijay Narayan (65), Jebunnisha (50), Anshika (24), and Awadhesh Pareek (37). They were rushed to Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital for emergency treatment.
Hospital officials reported that Mamta Kanwar and Awadhesh Pareek were declared dead on arrival, while Virendra Singh succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday morning. The remaining victims remain in critical condition and are being treated in the hospital’s trauma ward.
Following the tragedy, the area witnessed heightened tension, prompting authorities to deploy police personnel from four nearby stations to Nahargarh Road and adjoining localities to maintain order.
An FIR has been registered against the accused based on a complaint lodged by Mamta Kanwar’s father. The investigation is ongoing.
