West Bengal’s Christian Community Scales Back Home Worship Amid Growing Disputes
Christian organisations in West Bengal have temporarily curtailed home prayer meetings in some areas following complaints of disruptions, alleged assaults, and disputes over religious activities.
Complaints from several districts prompt religious groups to pause house meetings, while authorities question or investigate individual allegations.
Community organisations say they have advised congregations in several areas to avoid house-based prayer meetings and religious visits after several confrontations were reported across the state.
The complaints involve allegations ranging from physical attacks to disruption of funerals and damage to religious property.
The developments have not produced a uniform official account.
In some cases, police have registered complaints and begun inquiries, while officials have disputed allegations of assault or said the underlying dispute concerned land ownership and local objections.
The controversy has been particularly visible in Howrah.
At Ghusuri on August 25, representatives of the Church of the Grace said a gathering at a residence was interrupted and that some participants were assaulted.
Father Suraj Saroj alleged that members of the congregation were hurt and that police subsequently questioned them for several hours about the church’s activities, finances and credentials.
The church chose not to lodge a formal complaint over the incident. Instead, it suspended home prayers and visits, according to its representatives.
Two days later, a complaint from Purba Medinipur described another confrontation involving a Christian couple.
Pastor Joy Sutradhar said a prayer gathering at Check Milepost village was disrupted and alleged that he and his wife were beaten before being taken to a police station.
He said the gathering was accompanied by accusations of forced conversion.
Community lawyers later intervened, resulting in the couple’s release. According to Christian leader Herod Mullick, a complaint was subsequently sent by email.
The district’s police superintendent, Angshuman Saha, did not respond to the allegations.
The pattern described by Christian organisations also includes an incident in Uluberia, where a private residence was being used for worship on August 23.
Pastor Mithun Hazra said a gathering of roughly 60 people was interrupted after accusations of forced conversion were raised.
Hazra alleged that the premises were damaged during the confrontation, including prayer equipment, furniture and electrical fittings.
Police took people from the location for medical treatment, after which a complaint was filed.
Howrah Rural SP Amit Verma confirmed registration of an FIR and said the investigation was continuing.
No arrests had been made at the time.
Mullick, who heads the Bangiya Christiya Pariseba, said his organisation had received complaints from other locations as well.
He cited reported disturbances during prayer meetings in Jagatballavpur in Howrah and Hingalganj in North 24 Parganas on August 30, and said legal assistance was being provided to those who approached the organisation.
Not every dispute has centred on a prayer meeting.
A burial at Sahanagar in Purba Bardhaman on August 14 became contentious after local objections were raised over the use of land for a cemetery.
Church authorities said the burial was prevented and that mourners faced hostility.
Father Samuel Hembrom alleged that a woman’s body had to be removed from the grave and taken elsewhere after opposition to the burial.
Authorities, however, said the disagreement involved the status of the land.
Purba Bardhaman SP Pushpa said residents objected because the deceased was not from the locality and described the disputed plot as privately claimed land rather than an established cemetery.
Officials were examining land records, she said.
The police officer also questioned the claim that mourners had been assaulted, although she said the local police would be asked to verify the allegation.
Religious property has featured in the wider set of complaints as well. A church under construction in Subhasgram, South 24 Parganas, was reportedly vandalised on July 5.
The incidents have brought the issue into the political arena, with rival parties offering sharply contrasting explanations for what is happening.
Debdutta Majhi, president of the Hindu right-wing organisation Singha Bahini, defended protests against alleged religious conversions involving financial inducements.
His comments reflect the argument advanced by groups opposing Christian religious activity in the affected areas, although the allegations of widespread conversion through monetary inducements have not been independently established.
State minister Kshudiram Tudu took a different position, saying religious prayer should not be interfered with.
He maintained that voluntary religious choices should be respected but said the law would apply if forced conversion were established.
CPI(M) state secretary Md Selim said freedom to practise religion must be protected and accused BJP-ruled states of having witnessed comparable developments.
TMC spokesperson Pradeepta Mukherjee, meanwhile, accused the BJP of pursuing what he called a politics of fear and linked the allegations to attacks on minority households.
For Christian organisations, however, the immediate concern is less about the political exchange and more about whether small congregations can continue meeting safely.
Their decision to put some house prayers on hold marks a significant change in routine religious activity, even as police inquiries and competing accounts continue to shape the understanding of the individual incidents.

पश्चिम बंगाल के कुछ इलाकों में ईसाई समुदाय की छोटी घरेलू प्रार्थना सभाओं पर अब पहले जैसी सहजता नहीं रह गई है।
अलग-अलग जिलों में सामने आई शिकायतों के बाद कुछ संगठनों ने घरों में होने वाली प्रार्थना बैठकों और धार्मिक दौरों को अस्थायी रूप से रोक दिया है।
ईसाई प्रतिनिधियों के मुताबिक, इसकी वजह हाल के हफ्तों में सामने आए कई विवाद हैं।
इनमें प्रार्थना सभाओं में कथित हस्तक्षेप, मारपीट, अंतिम संस्कार को लेकर विरोध और धार्मिक संपत्ति को नुकसान पहुंचाने जैसी शिकायतें शामिल हैं।
हालांकि, सभी मामलों में प्रशासन और शिकायतकर्ताओं का विवरण एक जैसा नहीं है।
कहीं पुलिस ने प्राथमिकी दर्ज कर जांच शुरू की है, तो कहीं अधिकारियों ने घटना के कारण और मारपीट के आरोपों पर अलग राय जाहिर की है।
हावड़ा के घुसुड़ी में 25 अगस्त को एक घर में आयोजित प्रार्थना सभा को लेकर विवाद हुआ। चर्च ऑफ द ग्रेस के फादर सूरज सरोज ने आरोप लगाया कि सभा में पहुंचे कुछ लोगों के साथ मारपीट हुई और कई सदस्य घायल हुए।
उनका यह भी दावा था कि पुलिस के पास जाने के बाद उनसे चर्च की गतिविधियों, वित्तीय संसाधनों और धार्मिक कार्यकर्ताओं की जानकारी मांगी गई।
इस मामले में चर्च ने पुलिस में औपचारिक शिकायत नहीं दी। इसके बजाय उसने घरों में होने वाली प्रार्थनाओं और धार्मिक यात्राओं को रोकने का फैसला किया।
पूर्व मेदिनीपुर के चेक माइलपोस्ट गांव से 26 अगस्त को सामने आई शिकायत में पादरी जॉय सूत्रधर ने कहा कि प्रार्थना सभा के दौरान विवाद खड़ा हुआ और उनके तथा उनकी पत्नी के साथ मारपीट की गई।
उनका आरोप था कि दोनों को बाद में थाने ले जाया गया और वहां मौजूद लोगों ने जबरन धर्मांतरण के आरोप लगाए।
बाद में सामुदायिक वकीलों की मदद से दंपति को रिहा कराया गया। ईसाई नेता हेरोड मुल्लिक के अनुसार, बाद में ईमेल के माध्यम से शिकायत भेजी गई।
जिले के पुलिस अधीक्षक अंगशुमान साहा की ओर से इस मामले पर कोई प्रतिक्रिया नहीं मिली।
हावड़ा के उलूबेड़िया में भी 23 अगस्त को इसी तरह की शिकायत सामने आई थी। यहां एक किराये के मकान में करीब 60 लोग प्रार्थना के लिए जुटे थे।
पादरी मिथुन हाजरा ने आरोप लगाया कि जबरन धर्मांतरण का आरोप लगाते हुए सभा में व्यवधान पैदा किया गया और मकान के भीतर मौजूद सामान को नुकसान पहुंचाया गया।
पुलिस ने वहां मौजूद लोगों को बाहर निकाला और कुछ को इलाज के लिए अस्पताल ले जाया गया। बाद में शिकायत दर्ज हुई।
हावड़ा ग्रामीण के पुलिस अधीक्षक अमित वर्मा ने प्राथमिकी दर्ज किए जाने की पुष्टि करते हुए कहा कि मामले की जांच चल रही है। उस समय तक किसी गिरफ्तारी की जानकारी नहीं थी।
बंगीय क्रिश्चियन समुदाय के नेता हेरोड मुल्लिक का कहना है कि ऐसे मामलों की शिकायतें एक से अधिक स्थानों से मिली हैं।
उन्होंने 30 अगस्त को हावड़ा के जगतबल्लवपुर और उत्तर 24 परगना के हिंगलगंज में प्रार्थना सभाओं के दौरान कथित व्यवधान का भी उल्लेख किया।
उनका संगठन शिकायतकर्ताओं को कानूनी सहायता देने की बात कहता है।
इन घटनाओं के बीच पूर्व बर्दवान में सामने आया विवाद धार्मिक सभा के बजाय अंतिम संस्कार से जुड़ा था। 14 अगस्त को सहानगर में एक महिला के दफन को लेकर स्थानीय स्तर पर विरोध हुआ।
चर्च के प्रभारी पादरी फादर सैमुअल हेम्ब्रम ने आरोप लगाया कि दफन की अनुमति नहीं दी गई और कब्र से शव निकालकर बर्दवान शहर के दूसरे कब्रिस्तान में ले जाना पड़ा।
चर्च ने इस संबंध में जिला प्रशासन के अधिकारियों को शिकायत भेजी।
पुलिस के मुताबिक मामला अलग संदर्भ में था। पूर्व बर्दवान की एसपी पुष्पा ने कहा कि मृत महिला उस इलाके की रहने वाली नहीं थी और स्थानीय लोगों ने दफन पर आपत्ति जताई थी।
उन्होंने बताया कि संबंधित जमीन को निजी भूमि बताया जा रहा था और प्रशासन उसके रिकॉर्ड की जांच कर रहा था।
मारपीट की शिकायत पर भी पुलिस की राय अलग रही। एसपी ने कहा कि उन्हें प्रथम दृष्टया हमला होने की जानकारी नहीं लगी, लेकिन स्थानीय पुलिस से इसकी पुष्टि कराई जाएगी।
दक्षिण 24 परगना के सुभाषग्राम में निर्माणाधीन एक चर्च में 5 जुलाई को तोड़फोड़ की शिकायत भी सामने आई थी।
इससे ईसाई संगठनों द्वारा उठाई जा रही चिंता का दायरा केवल घरेलू प्रार्थना बैठकों तक सीमित नहीं रहता।
मामले ने राजनीतिक बहस को भी जन्म दिया है।
हिंदू दक्षिणपंथी संगठन सिंघा वाहिनी के अध्यक्ष देबदत्त माझी ने ऐसे धर्मांतरण के खिलाफ विरोध को सही ठहराया, जिनमें कथित तौर पर आर्थिक लाभ का इस्तेमाल किया जाता है।
हालांकि, व्यापक स्तर पर पैसे के जरिए धर्मांतरण कराए जाने के उनके दावे की स्वतंत्र पुष्टि नहीं हुई है।
राज्य के जनजातीय विकास एवं अल्पसंख्यक मामलों के मंत्री क्षुदीराम टुडू ने कहा कि धार्मिक आस्था के अनुसार प्रार्थना करना व्यक्तिगत अधिकार है और इसमें बाधा नहीं डाली जानी चाहिए।
साथ ही उन्होंने कहा कि जबरन धर्मांतरण साबित होने पर कानून के मुताबिक कार्रवाई होगी।
माकपा के राज्य सचिव मोहम्मद सलीम ने धार्मिक स्वतंत्रता की रक्षा की जरूरत बताई।
वहीं, तृणमूल कांग्रेस प्रवक्ता प्रदीप्त मुखर्जी ने भाजपा पर डर की राजनीति करने का आरोप लगाया और कहा कि अल्पसंख्यक समुदायों को निशाना बनाए जाने की घटनाओं को राजनीतिक रूप दिया जा रहा है।
भाजपा के राज्यसभा सांसद राहुल सिन्हा ने इन मामलों पर टिप्पणी करने से इनकार करते हुए कहा कि उन्हें ऐसी घटनाओं की जानकारी नहीं है।
फिलहाल इन विवादों का सबसे प्रत्यक्ष असर उन छोटे समूहों पर दिखाई दे रहा है जो नियमित रूप से घरों में प्रार्थना करते थे।
ईसाई संगठनों का कहना है कि सुरक्षा को लेकर पैदा हुई चिंता के कारण कुछ क्षेत्रों में धार्मिक गतिविधियों को रोकना पड़ा है।
दूसरी ओर, प्रशासन प्रत्येक मामले की अलग परिस्थितियों की जांच कर रहा है और कई आरोपों पर पक्षों के बयान अलग-अलग हैं।
