Emergency Anniversary: BJP Targets Congress Over 1975 Emergency, Calls It a Dark Chapter in Indian Democracy
Recalling the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday launched a sharp political attack on the Congress, accusing it of undermining democratic institutions during one of the most controversial periods in India’s political history.
The ruling party said those who now speak about protecting democracy must also acknowledge the events that unfolded during the Emergency imposed in 1975.
BJP leaders observed the occasion as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ (Constitution Murder Day), describing the Emergency as a direct assault on constitutional values, civil liberties, and democratic governance.
They said the anniversary serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding democratic institutions and ensuring that such an episode is never repeated.
BJP president Nitin Nabin described the Emergency as the “darkest chapter” in India’s democratic journey.
In a post on social media platform X, he said the decision to impose the Emergency was not merely a political move but an attempt to weaken the Constitution, suppress democratic institutions, and curtail the fundamental rights of citizens.
According to Nabin, the desire to retain political power led to an unprecedented challenge to India’s democratic framework.
He said that despite widespread restrictions, the determination of democracy activists, nationalist organisations,s and millions of ordinary citizens ultimately paved the way for the restoration of democratic rule.
He further stated that observing ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ is not only about remembering history but also about renewing the nation’s commitment to protecting constitutional principles, democratic traditions,n s and individual freedoms.
Senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad also criticised the Congress while recalling the Emergency period.
He alleged that democratic institutions, the judiciary, the media, and the civil rights of citizens came under severe pressure during those 21 months.
He urged people, particularly the younger generation, to remember what he described as the historical reality of that period.
Prasad said that while several political leaders today speak about defending democracy and frequently refer to the Constitution, it is equally important to examine the role played by those who were in power during the Emergency.
He argued that the anniversary provides an opportunity to revisit that chapter of history and understand its impact on India’s democratic institutions.
Referring to the media restrictions imposed during the Emergency, Prasad praised publications such as Panchjanya, Motherland, Organizer, and The Indian Express for continuing to resist censorship.
He said these publications played an important role in keeping democratic voices alive despite severe restrictions on the press.
The senior BJP leader also highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s role during the Emergency.
According to Prasad, Modi, who was then serving as an RSS pracharak, contributed significantly to the underground movement by helping organise communication networks and coordination efforts across Gujarat and several parts of northern India during the period of political suppression.
The BJP has been observing the 50th anniversary of the Emergency through public programmes and campaigns across the country, using the occasion to highlight what it describes as the importance of protecting democratic values, constitutional rights, and institutional independence.

आपातकाल लागू होने के 50 वर्ष पूरे होने पर भारतीय जनता पार्टी (भाजपा) ने गुरुवार को कांग्रेस पर तीखा राजनीतिक हमला बोला। पार्टी ने आरोप लगाया कि जो लोग आज लोकतंत्र बचाने की बात करते हैं, उन्हें 1975 में लगाए गए आपातकाल के दौरान लोकतांत्रिक संस्थाओं पर हुए प्रभाव को भी याद रखना चाहिए।
भाजपा ने इस अवसर को ‘संविधान हत्या दिवस’ के रूप में मनाते हुए कहा कि आपातकाल भारतीय संविधान, नागरिक स्वतंत्रता और लोकतांत्रिक व्यवस्था पर सीधा प्रहार था। पार्टी नेताओं का कहना है कि यह दिवस केवल इतिहास को याद करने का अवसर नहीं बल्कि लोकतांत्रिक मूल्यों और संवैधानिक संस्थाओं की रक्षा का संकल्प दोहराने का भी प्रतीक है।
भाजपा अध्यक्ष नितिन नवीन ने सोशल मीडिया मंच ‘एक्स’ पर लिखा कि आपातकाल भारतीय लोकतंत्र के इतिहास का सबसे अंधकारमय अध्याय था। उनके अनुसार, यह केवल एक राजनीतिक निर्णय नहीं था बल्कि संविधान, लोकतांत्रिक संस्थाओं और नागरिक अधिकारों को कमजोर करने का प्रयास था।
नितिन नवीन ने कहा कि सत्ता बचाने की राजनीतिक इच्छा ने उस समय लोकतंत्र की मूल भावना को चुनौती दी। उन्होंने कहा कि लोकतंत्र सेनानियों, राष्ट्रवादी संगठनों और करोड़ों नागरिकों के संघर्ष ने अंततः लोकतांत्रिक व्यवस्था की पुनर्स्थापना का मार्ग प्रशस्त किया।
उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि ‘संविधान हत्या दिवस’ हमें न केवल उस दौर की याद दिलाता है, बल्कि संविधान, लोकतांत्रिक मूल्यों और नागरिक स्वतंत्रता की रक्षा के लिए हमेशा सजग रहने का संकल्प भी देता है।
भाजपा के वरिष्ठ नेता और पूर्व केंद्रीय मंत्री रविशंकर प्रसाद ने भी आपातकाल के दौरान की घटनाओं का उल्लेख करते हुए कांग्रेस पर निशाना साधा। उन्होंने आरोप लगाया कि उस समय लोकतांत्रिक संस्थाओं, न्यायपालिका, मीडिया और नागरिक अधिकारों पर गंभीर दबाव डाला गया था। उन्होंने विशेष रूप से युवाओं से उस दौर के इतिहास को जानने और समझने की अपील की।
रविशंकर प्रसाद ने कहा कि आज कई नेता लोकतंत्र और संविधान की रक्षा की बात करते हैं, लेकिन उन्हें यह भी याद रखना चाहिए कि आपातकाल के समय सत्ता में कौन था और उस दौरान क्या हुआ था। उनके अनुसार, यह अवसर उस दौर की वास्तविक घटनाओं पर विचार करने का भी है।
उन्होंने कहा कि प्रेस सेंसरशिप के कठिन समय में पाञ्चजन्य, मदरलैंड, ऑर्गेनाइज़र और द इंडियन एक्सप्रेस जैसे प्रकाशनों ने अभिव्यक्ति की स्वतंत्रता और लोकतांत्रिक मूल्यों की रक्षा के लिए महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई तथा सेंसरशिप का विरोध किया।
रविशंकर प्रसाद ने प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी की भी सराहना करते हुए कहा कि आपातकाल के दौरान राष्ट्रीय स्वयंसेवक संघ (आरएसएस) के प्रचारक के रूप में उन्होंने भूमिगत आंदोलन में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई। उनके अनुसार, मोदी ने गुजरात से लेकर उत्तर भारत तक संपर्क और समन्वय बनाए रखने में उल्लेखनीय योगदान दिया।
भाजपा देशभर में विभिन्न कार्यक्रमों और जन-जागरूकता अभियानों के माध्यम से आपातकाल की 50वीं वर्षगांठ मना रही है। पार्टी का कहना है कि इस अवसर का उद्देश्य लोकतांत्रिक परंपराओं, संवैधानिक अधिकारों और संस्थागत स्वतंत्रता के महत्व के प्रति लोगों को जागरूक करना है।
