Flydubai Flight Crisis: Israel Considered Extreme Measure After Pilot Was Attacked
Fighter jets were scrambled after Flight 1073 lost contact with Israeli authorities following a cockpit assault, report says
A routine passenger flight bound for Tel Aviv turned into a major aviation-security emergency after violence erupted inside the cockpit, prompting Israel to prepare for the possibility that the aircraft could become a threat to a major population centre.
The incident involved Flydubai Flight 1073, which was carrying 182 passengers and crew on its journey from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
According to a CBS News report, Indian captain Smit Machchhar was attacked by his Omani co-pilot, Hamam al-Hammami, while the aircraft was operating near the Saudi-Jordanian border.
The aircraft subsequently lost around 14,000 feet of altitude, sharply raising concerns among authorities about what was happening aboard the plane.
Israeli officials were unable to establish contact with the cockpit, according to the report.
With the aircraft’s condition and intentions unclear, Israel moved rapidly into a high-level air-defence response.
Officials activated emergency arrangements for an aircraft suspected of being under hostile control, while a command centre and emergency decision-making team were activated.
Israeli fighter aircraft were scrambled, and the country’s airspace was shut as authorities tried to determine whether the passenger plane posed a direct danger to Israel.
The situation changed as the aircraft’s trajectory became clearer. Rather than continuing towards Israeli territory, the flight began moving in the direction of Saudi Arabia. Saudi authorities had also responded by deploying fighter aircraft, according to CBS News.
The Israeli jets were subsequently recalled.
Passengers helped bring the cockpit under control
The immediate crisis was eventually defused from inside the aircraft. Captain Machchhar managed to regain access to the cockpit, following which passengers intervened and restrained the co-pilot.
The aircraft was then diverted and landed at Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, bringing the dangerous episode to an end.
The incident nevertheless triggered serious contingency planning in Israel because officials initially could not establish what had happened inside the cockpit or whether the aircraft was being deliberately controlled by someone seeking to cause mass casualties.
CBS News, citing Israeli sources with direct knowledge of the response, reported that Israeli authorities had prepared another course of action had the aircraft continued towards the country.
Under that contingency, Israeli military aircraft could have entered Jordanian airspace to intercept and inspect the passenger plane.
Fighter pilots would have attempted to get close enough to examine the aircraft visually, particularly the cockpit, while also assessing whether there were indications of panic or an ongoing takeover among passengers.
The information gathered by the pilots would then have been passed to the emergency command structure.
A confirmed hijacking combined with an absence of communication from those controlling the aircraft could have resulted in the matter being escalated to Israel’s defence minister and prime minister.
Shoot-down option was reportedly left to the prime minister
According to the report, only the prime minister would have had the final authority to order the aircraft destroyed.
Such a decision would represent the most extreme response available to Israeli authorities.
The justification considered by officials, according to the sources cited by CBS News, was the possibility that allowing a hijacked or uncontrolled aircraft to continue towards Israel could result in a catastrophic attack on a strategic or densely populated location.
Possible high-value targets cited in the report included Ben Gurion Airport and the Azrieli Center in Tel Aviv.
The episode demonstrates how quickly an unexplained cockpit emergency can become a national-security crisis.
For Israel, where authorities maintain extensive preparations for aircraft hijacking and terrorist attacks, the loss of communication with a passenger jet was enough to trigger a response involving fighter aircraft and the country’s highest levels of government.
The reported preparations do not mean that a shoot-down order was actually issued.
The aircraft was ultimately diverted safely after control of the cockpit was restored and passengers restrained the co-pilot.
