Flydubai FZ1073 Attack: Injured Captain Smit Machchhar’s Final Push Saved 174 Lives

DUBAI: For Captain Smit Machchhar, the decisive moment aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073 came after he had already been seriously injured and the aircraft was plunging.
With his vision impaired and the cockpit in chaos, the Indian pilot said he realised that reaching the flight-deck door was his only remaining chance of survival—and of preventing a catastrophe involving the 174 people aboard.
Machchhar recounted the ordeal during a video conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday.
He said he believed he was going to die but summoned enough strength to make another attempt to open the cockpit door.
The flight, a Boeing 737 MAX travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, had been proceeding normally when the situation suddenly changed. Machchhar said his co-pilot, Hamam Al-Hammami, stood up to pray.
He did not consider the action unusual and deliberately kept his attention on the controls rather than looking behind him.
Several minutes later, the captain was struck violently from behind.
A blow that initially seemed like an aircraft emergency
Machchhar said the first impact was so unexpected that he initially wondered whether the aircraft itself had suffered some catastrophic problem. The next blows made the situation clear: the danger was coming from the other person inside the cockpit.
His eyesight became badly affected by the assault, while the aircraft began losing altitude rapidly. Despite his injuries, Machchhar made his way towards the cockpit exit.
He managed to open the door once, but the co-pilot forced it shut again. The injured captain then fell to the floor.
That setback, he said, left him with one final opportunity.
Machchhar told Netanyahu that he believed his life was in immediate danger. Drawing on whatever strength remained, he pushed himself back towards the door and managed to open it again.
This time, there were people outside.
Passengers and crew rushed into the cockpit and helped overpower the attacker.
Their intervention changed the course of the emergency and allowed the aircraft to be brought under control before it was eventually diverted to Saudi Arabia.
The cockpit door became the turning point.
The conversation with Netanyahu also shed light on how the cockpit door was opened.
When Netanyahu asked Machchhar about a supposed mechanism for releasing the door, the captain explained that there was no “pin” that had to be pulled. From inside, he said, the door could be opened by turning a knob, while people outside needed to enter a code.
Machchhar’s colleagues were reportedly attempting to gain access from outside, but Al-Hammami was preventing the door from being opened.
For the injured captain, the real challenge was reaching the internal control.
Once he got his hand to the knob, only a quick movement was needed.
That small physical action became the crucial link between the badly injured captain inside the cockpit and the people waiting outside.
‘I was fighting for my life’
Machchhar had earlier spoken to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the ordeal during a video call on October 2.
In that conversation, he said his immediate concern had been survival, but he was also determined not to allow the other people aboard the aircraft to die. He described the episode as a fight for his own life as well as a desperate effort to protect the passengers.
During the conversation, Machchhar also said he recited the Hanuman Chalisa while facing the crisis. He told Modi that the prayer was something he turned to whenever he found himself in distress.
The Prime Minister praised the captain’s composure and courage and wished him a speedy recovery.
From a plunging aircraft to an emergency landing
Once the cockpit door was opened and the attacker was restrained, the immediate challenge became keeping the aircraft in the air.
Two additional Flydubai pilots travelling aboard the aircraft subsequently helped take control of the situation. The aircraft had lost a substantial amount of altitude during the confrontation before being stabilised.
It was then diverted to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia, where an emergency landing was carried out. All 174 people aboard survived the incident.
Machchhar was seriously injured and was initially treated in Saudi Arabia. He was later transferred to the United Arab Emirates for further medical care, where reports said he was recovering.
Netanyahu calls Machchhar a hero.
Netanyahu used the conversation to publicly commend the Indian captain, describing him as a hero and crediting his actions with helping save those aboard the aircraft.
The Israeli prime minister also invited Machchhar and Modi to Israel’s Independence Day celebrations next year, where he proposed that they take part in a national ceremony.
The praise comes as investigators in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Israel continue examining what happened inside the aircraft, why the co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain and whether the incident was part of a planned terrorist operation.
UAE authorities have described the episode as a terrorist act, while the investigation continues to establish the full motive and circumstances behind the attack.
For Machchhar, however, the most critical part of the ordeal came before the investigation, the emergency landing or the international tributes: it was the moment he forced himself back onto his feet, reached for the cockpit door and opened it when he believed he had almost no strength left.

विमान तेजी से नीचे जा रहा था, हमले के कारण उनकी नजर धुंधली हो चुकी थी और शरीर जवाब देने लगा था। इसके बावजूद भारतीय कप्तान ने खुद को संभाला और दरवाजा खोल दिया। यही वह क्षण था जिसने विमान में सवार 174 लोगों के लिए हालात का रुख बदल दिया।

हमले में उनकी दृष्टि बुरी तरह प्रभावित हुई और इसी दौरान विमान तेजी से नीचे जाने लगा। गंभीर चोटों के बावजूद कप्तान कॉकपिट के दरवाजे तक पहुंचने में सफल रहे।
उन्होंने पहली बार दरवाजा खोल लिया, लेकिन सह-पायलट ने उसे फिर बंद कर दिया। मच्छार नीचे गिर पड़े।

नेतन्याहू ने मच्छार से दरवाजे के किसी ‘पिन’ को खींचने के बारे में पूछा। इस पर कप्तान ने स्पष्ट किया कि अंदर ऐसा कोई पिन नहीं होता। उनके मुताबिक, कॉकपिट के भीतर से दरवाजा एक नॉब घुमाकर खोला जाता है, जबकि बाहर से प्रवेश के लिए कोड की जरूरत होती है।
बाहर मौजूद उनके सहयोगी कोड डालकर दरवाजा खोलने की कोशिश कर रहे थे, लेकिन कथित तौर पर सह-पायलट उसे बंद रखे हुए था।
इसलिए असली चुनौती यह थी कि घायल कप्तान अंदर से दरवाजे के नॉब तक पहुंचे।
मच्छर जब किसी तरह वहां तक पहुंचे, तो उन्हें केवल एक तेज और छोटा मोड़ देना था।

इस बातचीत में मच्छार ने यह भी बताया कि संकट के दौरान उन्होंने हनुमान चालीसा का पाठ किया। उन्होंने कहा कि मुश्किल समय में वह इसका पाठ करते हैं और उस भयावह स्थिति में भी इसे दोहराते रहे।
प्रधानमंत्री मोदी ने उनके साहस और धैर्य की सराहना करते हुए उनके शीघ्र स्वस्थ होने की कामना की।
हजारों फीट नीचे गिरने के बाद तबुक में लैंडिंग
कॉकपिट का दरवाजा खुलने और कथित हमलावर को काबू किए जाने के बाद अगली बड़ी चुनौती विमान को सुरक्षित उड़ान में बनाए रखना थी।
विमान में यात्री के तौर पर मौजूद Flydubai के दो अन्य पायलटों ने इसके बाद नियंत्रण संभालने में मदद की। हमले के दौरान विमान काफी ऊंचाई खो चुका था, लेकिन अतिरिक्त पायलटों की मदद से इसे फिर स्थिर किया गया।
इसके बाद विमान को सऊदी अरब के उत्तर-पश्चिमी शहर तबुक की ओर मोड़ा गया, जहां उसकी आपात लैंडिंग कराई गई। विमान में सवार सभी 174 लोग इस घटना में बच गए।
मच्छार को गंभीर चोटें आई थीं। शुरुआत में सऊदी अरब में उनका इलाज किया गया और बाद में उन्हें आगे के उपचार के लिए संयुक्त अरब अमीरात ले जाया गया। उपलब्ध रिपोर्टों के मुताबिक उनकी हालत में सुधार हो रहा है।

इजरायल के प्रधानमंत्री बेंजामिन नेतन्याहू ने बातचीत के दौरान भारतीय कप्तान के साहस की खुलकर प्रशंसा की। उन्होंने मच्छार को हीरो बताया और कहा कि उनके कदमों ने विमान में सवार लोगों की जान बचाने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई।
नेतन्याहू ने मच्छार और प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी को अगले साल इजरायल के स्वतंत्रता दिवस समारोह में शामिल होने का निमंत्रण भी दिया। उन्होंने दोनों को एक राष्ट्रीय समारोह में हिस्सा लेने का प्रस्ताव रखा।
इस बीच यूएई, सऊदी अरब और इजरायल की एजेंसियां इस पूरे घटनाक्रम की जांच कर रही हैं। जांच का मुख्य फोकस यह पता लगाना है कि कॉकपिट में हमला क्यों हुआ, सह-पायलट ने कथित तौर पर ऐसा कदम क्यों उठाया और क्या इसके पीछे पहले से कोई योजना या आतंकी मंशा थी।
यूएई के अधिकारियों ने घटना को आतंकी कृत्य बताया है, जबकि जांच एजेंसियां इसके पीछे के मकसद और घटनाओं की पूरी कड़ी को स्थापित करने में जुटी हैं।
