Flydubai FZ1073 Attack: Hamam Al-Hammami’s Online Posts, University Record Under Scrutiny

DUBAI: The investigation into the Flydubai cockpit attack has taken a new turn, with scrutiny shifting to the alleged assailant’s background, including social-media material, university education and his path into commercial aviation.

Hamam Al-Hammami, a 29-year-old Omani national, is being held in Abu Dhabi after allegedly attacking Indian captain Smit Machchhar during a Dubai-Tel Aviv flight. UAE prosecutors have described the episode as an attempted terrorist attack.

Reports published after his identification have focused on online material attributed to an account that appears to have been operated by Al-Hammami while he was studying aviation-related subjects in Britain.

The account, which reportedly operated under the name “Pilot Hamam al-Hammami” and used the handle @PilotHamam, described its owner as an Omani civilian pilot from Muscat.

Information posted on the account, including references to his family background, reportedly corresponds with details attributed to Al-Hammami.

Old social-media activity attracts attention.

The Telegraph reviewed more than 2,000 posts from the account dating from November 2021 to August 2022.

According to the newspaper, the material contained comments supporting violence against women, severe religious punishments and abusive remarks directed at gay people.

Some posts also contained sexual insults and threatening language. In one exchange cited by the newspaper, the account reportedly threatened violence against a woman.

Another series of comments concerned a man accused of blackmailing women. The account allegedly argued that such a person should face execution rather than a prison sentence and referred to religious scripture while making the argument.

The newspaper also reported that the account expressed approval of Russia’s military action in Ukraine.

In one discussion involving violence against a woman, the author reportedly drew a comparison with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in terms that appeared supportive of Moscow’s actions.

These posts are now being examined as part of the wider effort to establish Al-Hammami’s ideological and personal background.

However, the material remains social-media evidence attributed to an account believed to be connected to him and does not by itself establish the circumstances behind the alleged cockpit attack.

Questions over university education

Al-Hammami’s education in Britain has also attracted renewed attention.

Reports say he obtained an aviation-management degree through distance learning from Buckinghamshire New University in 2023. The university has stressed that the course was not a pilot-training programme.

The distinction has become significant because the incident has prompted questions about how Al-Hammami acquired the qualifications and experience required to serve in the cockpit of a commercial passenger aircraft.

According to reports, Al-Hammami is believed to have completed much of his university education remotely while based in Muscat.

A pilot who studied the same course told The Telegraph that he had never met another student from the programme. A former lecturer also reportedly said Al-Hammami’s name was unfamiliar to him.

The university’s online teaching structure may partly explain that lack of personal contact. Recorded lectures meant that students studying remotely were not necessarily required to participate in live classroom sessions.

Political pressure over overseas students

The revelations have also triggered a wider debate in Britain over checks on foreign students.

The UK’s Conservative Party has called for stricter scrutiny of international students, including people enrolled in distance-learning programmes.

The debate comes as investigators examine how a student with the alleged views attributed to Al-Hammami progressed from university education to a role involving the operation of commercial aircraft.

At this stage, however, the reports about his social-media activity and education do not by themselves establish when or why he allegedly became involved in extremist activity, nor do they provide a complete explanation for the events aboard FZ1073.

What happened aboard FZ1073?

The background investigation follows a dramatic incident aboard the Boeing 737 MAX operating from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

The co-pilot allegedly attacked Captain Machchhar inside the cockpit using the aircraft’s emergency crash axe. The resulting struggle was followed by a severe loss of altitude, with reports indicating that the aircraft dropped roughly 17,000 feet before passengers and crew intervened.

Passengers eventually managed to overpower the co-pilot, while additional pilots who had been travelling aboard the aircraft helped recover control of the plane.

The damaged aircraft was subsequently diverted to Saudi Arabia, where it made an emergency landing.

Israel’s Defence Minister has reportedly characterised the incident as a “jihadist” attack.

The immediate emergency has now given way to a broader investigation into Al-Hammami’s history, his professional qualifications, his previous employment and the circumstances under which he came to occupy a cockpit position on a commercial passenger flight.

With the suspect in custody, investigators are expected to examine both the events inside the aircraft and the background that preceded them.

अधिकारियों और मीडिया रिपोर्टों का ध्यान 29 वर्षीय ओमानी नागरिक हमाम अल-हम्मामी की पुरानी ऑनलाइन गतिविधियों, ब्रिटेन में उसकी शिक्षा और वाणिज्यिक विमानन तक उसके पहुंचने की प्रक्रिया पर भी केंद्रित हो गया है।

अल-हम्मामी इस समय अबू धाबी में हिरासत में है। उस पर दुबई से अवीव जा रही Flydubai की उड़ान में मच्छरों पर हमला करने का आरोप है। यूएई के अभियोजक ने घटना को आतंकी हमले के प्रयास के रूप में बताया है।

उसकी पहचान सामने आने के एक दिन बाद उसके कथित सोशल मीडिया इतिहास से जुड़े कई दावे सामने आए। इनमें एक ऐसे अकाउंट का उल्लेख है, जिसे रिपोर्टों में अल-हम्मामी से संबंधित बताया गया है और जो उसके ब्रिटेन में पढ़ाई करने के दौरान सक्रिय था।

पुराने पोस्टों में क्या सामने आया?

अखबार का दावा है कि इनमें महिलाओं के खिलाफ हिंसा का समर्थन करने, कड़े धार्मिक दंड की वकालत करने और समलैंगिक लोगों के खिलाफ आपत्तिजनक टिप्पणियां शामिल थीं।

रिपोर्ट में कुछ पोस्टों को धमकी भरे और यौन रूप से अपमानजनक लहजे वाला भी बताया गया है। एक महिला के साथ ऑनलाइन बहस के दौरान कथित तौर पर हिंसा की धमकी दिए जाने का उल्लेख भी रिपोर्ट में किया गया है।

एक अन्य चर्चा में महिलाओं को कथित तौर पर ब्लैकमेल करने वाले व्यक्ति के लिए सजा को लेकर टिप्पणी की गई थी। रिपोर्ट के मुताबिक, अकाउंट ने जेल भेजे जाने के बजाय मृत्युदंड का समर्थन किया और अपने तर्क में धार्मिक ग्रंथ के एक अंश का हवाला दिया।

ऑनलाइन गतिविधि में रूस-यूक्रेन युद्ध से जुड़े विचारों को लेकर भी दावा सामने आया है। The Telegraph के अनुसार, अकाउंट से रूस की यूक्रेन में सैन्य कार्रवाई के प्रति समर्थन झलकता था। महिलाओं के खिलाफ हिंसा से जुड़ी एक बहस में भी रूस के यूक्रेन पर हमले से तुलना किए जाने की बात कही गई है।

हालांकि, इन पोस्टों की रिपोर्टिंग को अल-हम्मामी की पृष्ठभूमि की जांच के हिस्से के रूप में देखा जा रहा है, लेकिन किसी सोशल मीडिया अकाउंट को किसी व्यक्ति से जोड़ने के दावे और उसके कथित विचारों को विमान में हुए अपराध का प्रत्यक्ष प्रमाण मानना अलग-अलग बातें हैं। इन पहलुओं की स्वतंत्र जांच जरूरी है।

ब्रिटेन की पढ़ाई भी सवालों के घेरे में

अल-हम्मामी की शैक्षणिक पृष्ठभूमि ने भी मामले को नया आयाम दिया है।

रिपोर्टों के अनुसार, उसने 2023 में ब्रिटेन की Buckinghamshire New University से दूरस्थ शिक्षा के जरिए एविएशन मैनेजमेंट में डिग्री हासिल की थी। विश्वविद्यालय ने स्पष्ट किया है कि यह पायलट प्रशिक्षण का पाठ्यक्रम नहीं था।

यही अंतर अब जांच के लिए महत्वपूर्ण माना जा रहा है। सवाल यह उठ रहा है कि एविएशन मैनेजमेंट की डिग्री के अलावा अल-हम्मामी ने पेशेवर पायलट के रूप में काम करने के लिए आवश्यक प्रशिक्षण और अनुभव कहां से हासिल किया।

बताया गया है कि वह मस्कट में रहते हुए दूरस्थ माध्यम से अपनी पढ़ाई करता था।

उसी पाठ्यक्रम से जुड़े एक पायलट ने The Telegraph को कथित तौर पर बताया कि उसने दूसरे छात्रों से व्यक्तिगत रूप से मुलाकात नहीं की थी। एक पूर्व शिक्षक ने भी कहा कि अल-हम्मामी का नाम उन्हें याद नहीं था।

ऑनलाइन शिक्षा की प्रकृति इसका एक कारण हो सकती है। रिपोर्टों के अनुसार, कई व्याख्यान रिकॉर्ड किए जाते थे और दूरस्थ छात्रों के लिए हर लाइव कक्षा में शामिल होना जरूरी नहीं था।

विदेशी छात्रों की जांच पर ब्रिटेन में बहस

अल-हम्मामी की पृष्ठभूमि सामने आने के बाद ब्रिटेन में विदेशी छात्रों की जांच और निगरानी को लेकर राजनीतिक बहस भी शुरू हो गई है।

ब्रिटेन की कंजरवेटिव पार्टी ने अंतरराष्ट्रीय छात्रों के लिए अधिक कड़े जांच प्रावधानों की मांग की है। इसमें ऑनलाइन या दूरस्थ माध्यम से पढ़ाई करने वाले विदेशी छात्रों को भी शामिल करने की बात कही गई है।

हालांकि, अभी तक सामने आई जानकारी से यह निष्कर्ष निकालना जल्दबाजी होगा कि कथित सोशल मीडिया गतिविधियों ने सीधे तौर पर उसके पायलट बनने या FZ1073 में हुई घटना को प्रभावित किया। जांचकर्ताओं को उसके अध्ययन, प्रशिक्षण, रोजगार और कथित गतिविधियों के बीच वास्तविक संबंध स्थापित करना होगा।

FZ1073 में आखिर हुआ क्या था?

यह पूरा मामला उस घटना के बाद सामने आया है जिसने दुबई-तेल अवीव उड़ान FZ1073 को अचानक आपात स्थिति में डाल दिया था।

Boeing 737 MAX में सवार सह-पायलट पर आरोप है कि उसने कॉकपिट में कैप्टन स्मित मच्छार पर विमान में मौजूद आपातकालीन कुल्हाड़ी से हमला किया।

हमले के बाद विमान ने बेहद तेजी से ऊंचाई खोई। रिपोर्टों के अनुसार, विमान करीब 17,000 फीट नीचे आ गया, जिसके बाद यात्रियों और क्रू ने कथित हमलावर को काबू करने में हस्तक्षेप किया।

इसी दौरान विमान में यात्री के रूप में मौजूद अतिरिक्त पायलटों ने नियंत्रण संभालने में सहायता की। विमान को बाद में सऊदी अरब की ओर मोड़ा गया, जहां उसकी आपात लैंडिंग कराई गई।

इजरायल के रक्षा मंत्री ने कथित तौर पर इस घटना को “जिहादी” हमला बताया है।

अब जांच का दायरा विमान के अंदर हुए संघर्ष से आगे बढ़कर अल-हम्मामी के पूरे पेशेवर और शैक्षणिक रिकॉर्ड तक पहुंच गया है।

जांचकर्ता उसके पुराने रोजगार, विमानन प्रशिक्षण, सोशल मीडिया गतिविधियों और उस प्रक्रिया की भी पड़ताल कर रहे हैं जिसके जरिए वह वाणिज्यिक यात्री विमान के कॉकपिट तक पहुंचा।

अल-हम्मामी के हिरासत में होने के बीच जांच का अगला चरण यह स्पष्ट करने पर केंद्रित रहेगा कि उसके कथित ऑनलाइन विचारों, पेशेवर इतिहास और FZ1073 में हुई हिंसक घटना के बीच वास्तव में क्या संबंध था।
